NBC: “Controversial” Ads Won’t Run, Except When They Will

nbc-logo-upside-down.jpgAccording to the Associated Press, NBC has refused to run television ads from a right-wing group because they’re too “controversial.” The group, to be sure, appears to court controversy. But the ads themselves appear (to me, at least) to be agreeable to everyone but the few Americans who truly deserve a butt-kicking.

OK — granted, Freedom’s Watch is a group of political conservatives. But NBC is hiding behind the notion that it won’t run “controversial” ads. Really? The next 11 months will be full of political hatchet-job spots. Good luck maintaining that standard.

Besides:

  • Remember the National Hockey League ad that got feminist Martha Burk up in arms? NBC ran it.
  • And the anti-smoking ad that all four major networks originally spiked because of the attendant controversy? NBC eventually ran it during the 2000 Olympics.
  • A few NBC affiliates refused to run a MoveOn.org ad last year, according to the Annenberg Public Policy Center — which suggests that the network green-lighted it.
  • And just a few months ago, NBC started running condom ads. (CBS and FOX took a pass.) Don’t get me wrong — me likey the condom ads. But weren’t they “controversial” too?

Note to NBC’s Standards and Practices department: One standard, please. For everyone.

UPDATE: A few of you have pointed out to me via e-mail (oversneer-AT-gmail-DOT-com) that NBC also refused to run ads for the stridently anti-Bush “Dixie Chicks” movie, and for a national Christian church denomination that stressed its inclusion of gays and lesbians. Fair enough. Personally, I think those decisions might have been motivated by a desire to not alienate other advertisers. But that’s just my opinion. You may have a point.

The only respect in which NBC will judge any ad of being to controversial, is if it promotes conservative or republican values or candidates.

I’ve given them my two cents worth on the matter.

    I wasn’t polite about it.

If Freedom’s Watch was a liberal organization, NBC would run the ads. But who are we kidding – a liberal organization that supports our men and women in the military is like finding a golden piece of crap in your backyard … it just ain’t gonna happen.

NBC is managed by left wing, liberal, people who disrespect our nation, our military, our leaders and our heritage. The left will take a great country and turn it into a communist type government, a socialist government if they gain power. If a Democrat gets into the White House, God Help America. But it will be with the help of NBC.

Be sure to let NBCs parent company GE know what you think about their stance on supporting the troops, as NBCs actions represent the entire company.

    NBC,

    Nothing But Communism?

    No Bright Contributions?

    Never Broadcast Conservatives?

    No Brains Consortium?

Just a few ideas for what NBC means.

Nevertheless, who do they think they are kidding?

They are claques for the left, sorting and filtering so they can boradcast leftist propaganda, and they won’t broadcast the advertisement because it turns their stomaches and they just don’t have the gonads for it.

    They are like Scrooge.

    Bah! Humbug!

    William

GE has made billions off of WWII government contracts from the Military. They should be give our troops triple thanks.

    Hi,
I’ve worked overseas for the past 30 years in the Electrical Field. And I have always bought Amertican products on whatever job that i’ve worked on.But I will no longer consider GE products
as long as they allow this kind anti-american attitude on NBC. VOTE WITH YOUR FEET PEOPLE!!!
    Thank you,
    Darrell

Tell GE that you think a company that takes hundreds of billions in contracts from the US government should show more respect for the men and women in uniform that protect its profits and pay that bill…

Apparently with this second ad from Americans for Truth, NBC is saying that the reason they won’t run the ad is because it has the website listed at the bottom–and the website directs to a site that has a political agenda. At least that’s the way the representative from AFT explained it to O’Reilly the other night.

The best defense would be to find other ads they’ve run with websites listed that also direct to sites with political agendas, and call them on it.
