Tony Fouls Out

When Tony Parker — the San Antonio Spurs point guard, rapper (or, as it’s pronounced in his native France, “rrrrrappair”), and, most importantly, husband of Eva Longoria — was asked on the eve of his July 7th wedding whether he wanted children, he had this to say:

“That would be even better than my NBA titles, even if I don’t compare private life and sports. Eva talks to me about it all the time. I’d like to have girls, because I come from a world of boys.”

He sure wasn’t kidding about wanting to have girls! Because now it turns out he’s been “having” French fashion model Alexandra Paressant on the side. And where did they meet? His wedding.

At this year’s NBA All-Star Game, Parker was asked about his wedding plans:

“Eva is doing everything, I’m just going to show up and say yes.”

Apparently “everything” included “not banging anybody else, like we promised.” And Eva told People last year:

“There’s no way in the world I would rather be single… I’ve said the only reason Tony and I are going to stay together forever is because we’re too lazy to look for someone else.”

Sounds like he got his second wind.

Damn, Longoria changed her last name for him, talked about quitting Desperate Housewives so she could have kids with him…

Asked by Fox Sports if her life was shaping up like a fairy tale, she prophetically quipped: “I’m nervous. It’s like everything’s going so well, something’s bound to go wrong.

For his part, Parker offered this in his first dual interview with Eva, on Extra:

The next day after I met her, like when we sat down, we talked for hours. And I really thought she was a great girl. She’s got a good heart, and I thought, “She was a keeper.” So I said, “I can’t mess that up!”

Oops. Some people just don’t know how good they’ve got it. And by “some people,” I am of course referring to the French.

UPDATE: X17online has an interview with “the other woman.”

All That Hot Air is Coming from the U.N.

un-flight-logo.jpg

This from London’s Evening Standard:

The UN secretary-general today called on world leaders for immediate action on climate change — before flying thousands of miles to the US for a music concert and then leaving in the interval to jet to Europe.

Ban Ki Moon has been slammed for planning a round-the-world trip that will generate thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions just days after he leaves the UN meeting in Bali.

The Times of London estimates that the extra 4,300 miles of jet-setting will generate about 1,684 pounds of extra carbon dioxide emissions — for each member of the UN chief’s delegation.

Barbara Walters is a Serious Journalist

babawawa.jpgBarbara Walters says celebrity interviews are now beneath her, claiming:

“I am not going after the tabloid stuff, I don’t do it.”

As Jossip rightly points out, the word missing from the above is “anymore.” She said she was tired of celebrities right before her “The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2007” program aired, which included such Nobel Prize winners as David and Victoria Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Katherine Heigl, and Jennifer Hudson.

So, half the list. And Harry Potter scribe J.K. Rowling, who topped Walters’s rankings, wouldn’t even sit down with her for an interview. So much for being a serious journalist!

Compass Readings

Recently the Catholic News Service gave The Golden Compass a good review, despite a Bill Donohue-concocted media slurricane about how the movie is anti-Catholic. The review specifically noted that the film has removed all of the Philip Pullman novel’s anti-religious content, and that it’s worthy on its own merits. Nonetheless, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which runs the news service, made the editor take the review down from its website. That URL now bounces to a (mildly defiant) press release about the removal.

Unfortunately for the bishops, and fortunately for anybody who values free thought, Google never forgets. The review is cached here. I particularly enjoyed the nut graf refuting Donohue’s nonsense:

Most moviegoers with no foreknowledge of the books or Pullman’s personal belief system will scarcely be aware of religious connotations, and can approach the movie as a pure fantasy-adventure. This is not the blatant real-world anti-Catholicism of, say, the recent “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” or “The Da Vinci Code.” Religious elements, as such, are practically nil.

Oh no! We can’t have that, can we? Sheesh. If Catholic bishops don’t want people to see this movie, they should harp on how cheesy the CGI looks (even in the promos), and how Nicole Kidman was apparently kept in a block of ice between takes.

The Church doesn’t have to dance to the tune of a fringe character like Bill Donohue just because he needs to squeeze his fat head in front of any TV camera that holds still long enough. I doubt Donohue has read the book. I doubt he’s read a book. And calling his group “the Catholic League” doesn’t give him authority over Catholics, any more than calling it “the Justice League” would give him abs and a discernible jawline.

Even if you think Philip Pullman is the Antichrist and nobody should ever see a movie with his name on it, shutting up anybody who’s not quite so sure sends the wrong message. There’s room for debate within the Church, isn’t there? This is 2007, not 1507.

Et Tu, Mangini?

belichick.jpgRemember that National Football League videotaping fracas in September? The New England Patriots (presently playing a perfect season at 13-0) were fined $250,000 and lost a top draft pick for next year. Patriots coach Bill Belichick personally had to fork over $500,000. All because a team employee was caught filming the defensive signals of the New York Jets (who presently, well, suck).

mangini.jpgHow did the Patriots get caught? Jets coach Eric Mangini turned them in to the league.

But that was then. This is now.

The Jets and Patriots are scheduled to play again on Sunday, and guess what? It emerged this morning that a Jets employee was caught secretly videotaping the Patriots sideline last season, presumably looking to spot play-calling signals.

The Jets claimed last night that they had the Patriots’ permission to film. But a league source told Newsday that the incident “resulted in the removal of a Jets employee. After Gillette Stadium officials saw him using the recorder early in the game, he was told to stop and leave the area. He had been filming from the mezzanine level between the scoreboard and a decorative lighthouse in an end zone.”

Permission or not, NFL rules state that “no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.” Also, “all video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead.”

Unless this entire episode is a ruse by the NFL to get fans interested in a game between arch-rivals, it looks like Mangini got caught with his zoom lens hanging out.

Bonus points: Mangini previously spent six years as an assistant coach, working for (drum roll, please…) Bill Belichick.

12 Days of Hypocrismas: The Box Is Actually Empty

diab.jpgJustin Timberlake is dreamy and whatever, and you know he’s made a bazillion dollars with FutureSex/LoveSounds. So why is it that the Justin Timberlake Foundation, which he created in 2002 to support music programs at schools, seems to be completely busted?

According to IRS documents, the foundation hasn’t filed a tax return since 2004. In that year, it made one grant worth $5,000 and hasn’t given a penny since. Back in the day on TRL, when he was best known for being the cute one in *NSync, Justin used to give a damn:

“I about a year ago started my own foundation to help music education because growin’ up in school I never really had a lot of music education and I wanted to make sure that any kid who had a dream like I did and didn’t have access to it could actually have access to it and we’ve done so many different things and now we started a partnership with American Music Conference…”

Timberlake blathered on to Carson Daly about petitions on his website. I’m sure they did a lot of good. More recently, his charity work includes hosting a golf tournament in Las Vegas and signing an Xbox 360 to be auctioned off for an Australian nonprofit. Sounds hard. (Click for tax returns from 2002, 2003, and 2004.)
