Pro football hall of famer Mike Ditka blasted the NFL and its players union earlier this year for not doing enough to help needy former players. Funny, because the charity he founded to do his part has actually done almost nothing at all. And now the loudmouth former coach is set to dissolve it entirely.
Writes USA Today:
The Mike Ditka Hall of Fame Assistance Trust Fund has collected $1.3 million and netted about $315,000 after expenses. But it has given only $57,000 to former players in need, according to federal and Illinois tax records.
Ditka promised in 2004 to give away $890,000 during the fund’s first three years, but no grants were made until just last year, when ten retired players collected modest checks. (Click for tax returns from 2004 and 2005.)
Meanwhile, the NFL and the union Ditka trashed? They gave out an average of $1.1 million each year from 2000 to 2005.
