Hayden Panettiere Wants to Save (Some of) the Animals

Hayden on dolphins (11/2/07):

“Now more than ever the world has to come together to make changes. Just because certain cultures [ed: like the Japanese] have had long-standing traditions does not mean that in today’s world they are acceptable any longer. The world and the environment are evolving and that means we must change our ways as human beings as well.”

Hayden on cows (order now):

“What if you had the chance to design the handbag you’ve always wanted? For Hayden Panettiere, currently starring in NBC’s hit show Heroes, it was an exciting opportunity. She began by describing to Peter Dooney just what she envisioned: a large leather shoulder bag with puffy pleats, a buckle closure and great style. The design team made some sketches, then Peter Dooney transformed her ideas into prototypes at Dooney & Bourke’s design studio in Florence, Italy. After several revisions and lots of input from Hayden, the limited edition Hayden Bag was born.”

And it’s only 500 bucks! Lesson to Japanese dolphin hunters: Just give Hayden a cut of the take, put her initials on the lil’ fellas’ skins, and you’ll be golden. Or in this case, red. Red like, say, blood.

Please tell me you understand the difference between the intelligence of dolphins and cows. There must be some hardcore vegans running this site…

So David…only the smart animals should be saved? How is that logic any more sound?

For the record, I’m not a vegan (or even vegetarian), but Hayden Panettiere says she is. And for a lucrative endorsement contract, her principles are apparently flexible.

Some animals are more equal than others, right?

  7. 7 David Dec 19th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

    Right

And I didn’t say only smart animals should be saved, but I think you know the difference between the slaughter of wild, intelligent animals and the use of leather. We do not farm dolphin; we do farm cows (which of course are certainly killed much more humanely). Thus it is much more responsible to use leather than to OK the slaughter of dolphin. The real issue is the method of cruel slaughter, not so much that people are choosing to eat dolphin.

Also, maybe you would create less confusion if you wrote more in your original article instead of re-posting two authors and adding a snarky comment at the end. Perhaps stating that she is ultimately being hypocritical because she is a vegan would have made sense.

    K.

    I apologize for your confusion.

I know I’m being a total b*tch by saying this but everytime I see that image of her crying I giggle. Yeah, I know I’m going to hell…as long as there’s Ben and Jerry’s, I’m good.

    David,
So based on your opinion, if something is raised for that purpose, then it’s OK? So slavery must have been appropriate because people raised them for that purpose.

Seriously, you have obviously done NO research on factory farming. That is the cruelest industry in existence. There is no humane slaughter technique. Plus, the conditions in which they live even prior to slaughter are horrendous. Do us all a favor and google the term factory farming.

I’m opposed to the slaughter of dolphins too, but at least they lived happy and free lives prior to their death and weren’t consistently abused throughout their short lives like farm animals.

Slavery wouldn’t be something. It would be someone. I don’t think chickens and pigs would count as the latter.

And have you ever visited an actual animal farm? You know, strapped on some boots and breathed in the manure smell and all that? I can tell you from personal experience that there is actually such a thing as humane slaughter techniques.

Forget Googling “factory farm” — how about visiting one before you form an opinion?

If it has a brain, it has intelligence, no matter of the size. Life is life, you did not ask to be alive, nor did an incest or cow but humans have the ability to respect and appreciate life with a gift of advanced intelligence and it is there to be used for good and not evil and yet this happens everyday through greed of murdering, for food and fun.

Don’t forget driving cars. All those insects on my windshield …

Why is it that people who stand for nothing are always the first to criticize people who actively stand for something? I’m willing to bet that Hayden has taken more action for her beliefs than everybody in this forum, myself included. So she screwed up on the bag– hopefully she will recognize her mistake and do better in the future. But if she makes another mistake, I’ll rest easy knowing that several people in this forum will be there to point it out and bring her down to their level.
