Haven’t You Been Smoking Peyote for Six Straight Days?

owen_wilson.jpgOwen Wilson was spotted shopping for a bong this week, suggesting that maybe his whole “I don’t have a drug problem” deal is a farce.

At the Green House Smoke Shop in in Venice, Calif., onlookers say he spent 20 minutes browsing marijuana pipes before spending nearly $300 on a bong.

Possibly paranoid already, he then hid behind a FedEx truck to avoid paparazzi detection before sprinting to his car.

He reportedly checked into rehab following a three-day drug binge that preceded his suicide attempt in August.

I’m actually always surprised that people still smoke pot. That just strikes me as something you do when you’re 15 or 16. That’s when I did it. Don’t you grow out of it? I guess to be fair I never really liked being high. It had no thrill for me. It was just so… blah.

  2. 2 Monkey Jan 24th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

What, no pictures of the bong?

(wants to know what $300 worth of bong looks like in California)

  3. 3 Compassionate User Jan 24th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

I’m the manager of a smoke shop in southern california. we see all kind of celebrities down here, but not just that, we see people from all walks of life. sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, lawyers, doctors, the very elderly, the very ill, teachers, law enforcement (seriously), laborers, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, rednecks, gangbangers, professional wrestlers, of any and all ages. Families come with each other to our place to buy waterpipes, as a family outing. This is reality. This is how the entire state is. I can’t speculate if they’re all smoking tobacco out of our waterpipes, but whatever they’re doing, lots of them do it and basically all the time. Business never gets bad. (except sundays during the game)

If there is one thing I can say, the majority of our customers are over 30, with a generous portion of those men and women being white or blue collar mothers and fathers in their 40’s and 50’s.

People you see and know smoke it everyday. More than you think obviously.

Well, when I was 15 or 16 I was also smoking and drinking. So, really it’s up to the individual which method of getting high that they prefer. Smoking pot is no more juvenile than alcohol.

  5. 5 Pastafarian Jan 24th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Sheesh. I didn’t mean to offend the pot mafia. The only thing worse than getting into an argument with an animal rights terrorist, is telling someone that smoking pot is stupid. Why take it so personally? I know only one guy that still actively smokes pot. He is 39 and guess where he lives? That’s right with his mom. Permanently trapped in some bizarre adolescent world where bands like Poison, and Motley Crue are still relevant. I’m not telling you to stop. I just thought it was a shitty high that people grew out of once they hit 17.

  6. 6 ALoveSupreme Jan 24th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

“Sheesh.” “Why take it so personally?”

Lighten up Francis. You’re the only one here getting worked up.

  7. 7 RustyStardust Jan 24th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

i’m sorry, but smoking pot is not the same thing as a drug problem. there is a HUGE difference between pot and coke, crack, meth, ecstasy, you name it. and, to answer that dude who is flabbergasted people still smoke pot- dude, professionals of all stars and stripes smoke the ‘hippie salad’. as a matter of fact, one of the most driven people i have ever worked for (he’s a talent agent) is a giant smoker. he works for dawn to dusk. the thing that amazes me is that people are still so uptight about weed. it’s harmless (i’ve seen nothing to the contrary), and safer than alcohol. so, chill…

  8. 8 Yer MOm Jan 24th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

So because you know some dude who’s a loser that happens to smoke pot .. you judge every one who smokes by him? real smart.. I make 6 figures a year and I smoke every day… I have buddies who make more and also smoke… some of whom have worked on the star wars movies and lord of the rings series designing creatures and graphics… judgemental people like you will live out your lives limiting your experiences to your petty judgements and prejudices.. you’ll never do anything terribly interesting or out of the norm… unfortunatly all the rest of us open minded people are subjugated to you Vogon idiots by the fact that you’re better at paper work and plodding through a mindless existence, which is required to succeed in government. If you though it was a shitty high you were probably smoking the shitty weed that is the only kind 16 year olds are able to get.. do yourself a favor and open your mind.. I know alot of people who don’t smoke.. but they are still able to hang out with the rest of us as they dont look down their noses at the stoners and use them to boost their pathetic egos by considering themselves superior… kind of like you just did.. Do yourself a favor Pastafarian and shut yer hole… and stop defiling his holy name… by calling yourself a pastafarian… Ramen

  9. 9 Yer MOm Jan 24th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

And anyways… since when is doing some bong hits a “drug problem” grow up… Herion addiction or pill addiction is a drug problem… snorting meth daily or cocaine is a drug problem… SMoking some weed won’t turn you into a psychotic asshole desperate to get money for drugs… and it won’t empty yer bank account unless you’re a weak minded moron…

  10. 10 Yer MOm Jan 24th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

nobody’s ever sucked dick for weed

  11. 11 Holly Won't Jan 24th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Recreational pot use like you’re describing, Yer MOm, does not a drug problem make, I’ll give you that. But the dude has a history of using crystal meth, cocaine, heroin, and Oxycontin, all of which led pretty directly to his suicide attempt last summer. So when he says he isn’t addicted to drugs and then he’s seen out buying pot paraphernalia, that right there is a drug problem.

Some people stop at pot, but he clearly didn’t.

  12. 12 Alpha Jan 24th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

    Holly Won’t

We should be applauding him if weed is the strongest thing he’s smoking then, shouldn’t we? After all, its even less dangerous than McDonalds food.

    Pastafarian

I guess you don’t know any of the 47,000,000 americans who smoke atleast once a month. I’m guessing its more along the lines of they don’t think your cool enough to want to tell you.

As a medical marijuana provider, I have several patients who are school teachers, police officers, university professors, and even priest. Your lump summing of all people who use cannabis is a typical view of close minded individuals. What you do in your own home, should be your business.

Here’s to life, liberty, and the American Dream, eh?

  13. 13 Holly Won't Jan 24th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

Meh. My applause doesn’t come that cheap.

  14. 14 Rocko Jan 25th, 2008 at 12:23 am

    Pot Kills!

  15. 15 StylesNZ Jan 25th, 2008 at 2:13 am

Um…. just to point something out, Peyote (in the headline) is an hallucinogenic cactus that is taken not smoked and is used by native americans and Mexican shaman to go on vision quests. Im surprised that people in cali and in general (the states) should be mistaking the two very very different drugs, and then setting off on a pro-pot/anti pot rant.

America, chill the fuck out, encourage free speech and though: you might not start so many wars that way.

oh yeah, and if you want to look at a drug problem, look at your societies dependence on prescription medication. ASK HEATH LEDGER.

  16. 16 Adam Jan 25th, 2008 at 11:00 am

Wait, if you drink every day you have an alcohol problem right? Why doesn’t smoking everyday equal a drug problem?

  17. 17 Amazed at how naive people are Jan 25th, 2008 at 11:17 am

The US has more cocaine addicts than any country. Meth is destroying a generation. And you’re worried about Pot? That’s just silly in light of the fact that there is a reported 2 billion people in the world on Xanax, Prozac and other mind altering drugs. Beer is a drug for chrissake. Caffine is a drug. Duhhh! 97% of the world is on one drug or another. WAKE UP! The remaining 3% are mentally or physically handicapped. The world doesn’t want to face any reality. Soma-gas anyone??

StylesNZ….. ummm.. thats just a line from the movie zoolander, which no one questioned anyway…. keep reading those snapple caps, chief.

you guys need to lighten up. and mind your business. who cares what other people do, its their lives. but of course, each one of you think your point of view is right because its YOUR way of thinking.. Get off your high horse and worry about yourselves.

The one thing that people who argue about this kind of thing can not ever come to understand is that, like every little thing in life, reefer does different things to different people.

I have a love-hate relationship with it, and it’s no surprise that my mom loves it and my dad hates it. Mom is a 55-year-old pothead and Dad has only ever eaten brownies once, and apparently it caused him to be depressed for a long time.

    Genetics.
When I am high, I am either playing beautiful music, thinking beautiful thoughts, or having a full-on panic attack.

Chemically, THC mimics a neurotransmitter which is generally sent between neurons when new synapses are formed, that is, when you learn things, and when your brain is growing before you are an adult.

So before you go telling people what will or won’t happen if THC gets into their brains, maybe you people should realize that everyone’s experiences are different.

And everyone has one friend or so that can handle the dimming effects of THC on the memory. That doesn’t mean everyone who smokes chronic for years is going to be better off for it. In fact, as I’ve been saying, a few people will be better off, a few worse off, and everyone else will be just as off as they ever were.

“but of course, each one of you think your point of view is right because its YOUR way of thinking.”

A phenomenon to which you, of course, are immune.

    And my point is made.

  22. 22 Pastafarian Jan 25th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

I don’t think smoking pot equals a “drug problem” necessarily. Do I even think it should be illegal? Absolutely not. I’ve tried most drugs and they just aren’t for me. Is that okay with you?

All drugs should be legal, and regulated. I also don’t think it’s necessary to provide me all of those fascinating statistics about weed smokers.

Wanna smoke weed? Go ahead. Just ‘cuz I think it’s lame doesn’t mean you have to rip my head off. Enjoy yourself.

Owen buying a bong is no different than picking up a six pack or a bottle of wine. Americans are the ultimate hypocrytes. In California, where i live, smoke shops are located in strip malls & on various corners-depending on the town. Marijuana has great medical benefits that should not be overlooked in the conservative religous zeal that so many people tend to embrace w/o open minded understanding. With so so many americans w/o health care or medical benefits suffering from a chronic condition or your rx may be limited or you cannot afford to obtain prescriptions or the medicine that mainstream western drs prescribe has revolting side effects. Then why not use an herbal, natural cure that is proven to relieve pain, nausea, headaches, ect. -basically the most treated issues drs see. I self medicate when needed for chronic pain ( from a bad car accident). I am a working woman:) I have been treated by wonderful drs-tried mainstream medicine-they treated my pain w/vicodin, flexeril & various other meds. I was on a handful a day. Ended up in detox to get off the crap. I still have chronic pain issues that may never go away. BUT-smoking herb can help me cope w/the pain w/o the addictive side effects of opiates the drs. put me on. It isn’t the choice for everyone and thats ok, but let us have the choice. Please remember****PEOPLE DONT die FROM SMOKING MARIJUANA***ALCOHAL KILLS-yet its legal. :) Peace out (y)

It is amazing that alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals are all legal (and have a nice tax to benefit the government), and yet they are statistically proven to cause more death then marijuana users. I wouldn’t be surprised either that alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals related deaths add up to be a greater death tole then war in Iraq.

And please note, Marijuana related deaths are as rare as a 4 leaf clover. So if you do manage to find a case, you might as well go try and find a pot-of-gold at the end of the rainbow.

this is stupid! there is no rehab for weed! weed is very close to being legalized.. READ A BOOK.. marihuana hurts you waaaaaay more than alcohol or cigarrettes.. its stupid that you still call it a drug.. it also impares you way less than alcohol does.. stop calling it a drug already! it also has medicinal properties! if he had been seen buying a CRACK PIPE than it wouldve been news worthy.. grow up people!

Yes, perhaps we should throw all laid-back occasional pot smokers in prison–surely that will help “cure” them of the evil (and contribute the added benefit of increasing the prison overpopulation problem we all end up paying for).

  28. 28 chachi Apr 23rd, 2008 at 3:01 pm

dude i smoke pot and i have a job if you take azo before a drug test it clears your system out so their is no reason not to have a job ……..o and pot rules

I have had a love-hate relationship with marijuana for some 20 years now. While I continue to love the effects it has on my mind and spirit, and regard the substance as a vehicle for inducing a creative and mystical state, inhaling smoke of any kind is obviously NOT HEALTHY FOR THE LUNGS IN THE LONG RUN. One need only look at the amount of resin and tar that accumulates on the inside of a pipe after a short while to realize that this same sludge must obviously be accumulating in the lungs. Waterbongs filled with ice & water seem to reduce the hazardous effects of heat scourching the throat, and investing in a good vaporizer is probably a good idea for chronic smokers, if they want to avoid the same illnesses that befall many long-term cigarette smokers. Otherwise; Everything in moderation seems to be a good policy. – peace
