Victoria Beckham has made a lot of noise lately by jumping on the anti-sunlight campaign from designer Marc Jacobs and the New York University Skin Care Foundation. Though I love the Jacobs t-shirt (ironically short-sleeved, as my co-blogger points out), the whole effort is basically a “scare people out of the sun (and tanning bed)” campaign.
The recently crowned “Worst Dressed” celeb told the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Daily Dish” last week:
“Since we moved to California I have realized how important it is to practice safe sun for myself and to keep my three boys’ skin well protected as well. Skin cancer is a huge problem and I really wanted to help raise awareness by taking part in Marc’s initiative.”
Wouldn’t it be ironic (and hypocritical) if the often-bronze Victoria were secretly visiting tanning salons in between photo-ops?
Ask and you shall receive. From the New York Post’s “Page Six” yesterday:
The world’s most metrosexual couple apparently believes that spouses who tan together, stay together. David and Victoria Beckham have been spotted fake-baking at the Sunstyle tanning salon in West Hollywood, which prides itself on being “paparazzi-free” — but thankfully for us, not spy-free. A witness told The Post’s Don Kaplan the LA Galaxy midfielder tried to slip discreetly out of a booth smelling of “lavender, puppies and rainbows … The beds have got some sort of nozzle that sprays you with a scent so you don’t leave the booth smelling like charred flesh.”
It’s hardly a secret that tons of celebrities are fans of tanning beds. And I’m sure the NYU folks (and Marc Jacobs) are well-meaning people. But they’ve so thoroughly demonized tanning with negative hype about sun exposure and UV rays that Posh is forced to do it in secret.
Other famous bods appearing on forthcoming Jacobs shirts include Heidi Klum, Eva Mendes, Dita Von Teese, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, and Joss Stone. Plus (sayeth FabSugar) Hilary Swank, Winona Ryder, Christy Turlington, Selma Blair, Dita Von Teese, Rufus Wainwright, and Julianne Moore.
Other than the perpetually pale Dita, I wonder how many of them are tanning closet-case self-loathers?

Hey - don’t these people make a zillion dollars and drive 1/4 million dollar cars. If they want to visit a tanning salon I’m sure they could just buy a couple dozen units for themselves - they cost like $5 grand each?!?! Why risk Paparazzi when they can’t take pictures of you in your own home.
I’m basically staying out of this because I own a tanning salon. But if Joe Obvious could tell me where I can get a commercial tanning bed for 5 grand boy I’d appreciate it.
Who else besides Dita? Seriously? Have you ever seen Julianne Moore with a tan? Be fair, I know you’re in the business of outing hypocrites, but I’m pretty sure she’s not secretly tanning. I don’t even think she *could* get a tan if she wanted to.
yeah, pastafarian I agree, those beds he is talking about cost 50. 000 not 5 grand and hasn’t anyone out there heard about spray tan, Im sure the salon has a unit, so just coz she goes to a salon to tan it doesnt have to be a bed, just a thought.
I’ve been to a tanning salon before (a mistake I made just before my high school prom) &, if I remember correctly, it’s really quite different from getting a tan via natural sunlight. So I don’t see why there’s such a fuss made over Victoria Beckham’s “anti-sun” campaign. Lord knows, I’m against overexposure to the sun myself (although that extends to my general disdain of tanning salons after my first attempt) but really, isn’t this just nitpicking?
Leave her the @#$% alone. What is wrong with you people? So if she wants to tan, that’s her right, and if she lies about it, oh well, that’s her right too. Let her live her life already.
LOL. your an ass.. she made a big anti-sunlight campaign and incase you didn’t know the sun throws off uv rays which make it “dangerous” for your skin.. And tanning beds emit just the same if not more uv rays so thats why people are making a fuss of this.. I’m sure it was just her idea to make a quick buck to include her name in something.
