Keith Olbermann Apologizes on Behalf of David Shuster for Saying Something Keith Olbermann Once Said Without Having to Apologize to Anybody

P.S. Why is saying that a male U.S. general is being pimped completely different from saying the female child of an ex-President is being pimped? (Hint: “Fail” isn’t a reason, even if you type it in all caps.)

P.P.S. Guy Branum, writing in Slate, is right on the nose: “The treatment of Chelsea Clinton as a special figure in American politics has to end. If she’s shy, she should return to private life. If she wants to campaign for her mom, she should get our respect, but she must also expect our scrutiny.”

I Hope She Throws a Trophy at His Head

blake_and_amy.jpgAmy Winehouse had a hell of a night at the Grammys, picking up five awards for her debut album. And she seems to be making great progress in rehab, so really, kudos to her.

However, her loser husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, seems kind of jealous of all the attention she’s getting while he sits in jail. So he gave her the following letter yesterday — and also sent a copy to the media:

“Baby, oh darling. Please don’t leave me Amy. I’m so worried that now you’re thinking straight you’ll realise I’m not worthy of you. Oh God, please don’t leave me. I’ll do anything to show you my heart and loyalty is with you.
I did tell my mum how you fell asleep on visits … and although sometimes I think your dad hurts me unnecessarily I love him and respect him.
Me and my family are finished for good. No visits, phone calls, nothing.
I love my new family and can’t wait to show them I’m not just a f*cking loser and that I can look after their daughter. That’s if you can find it in your heart to trust me.
Your my family now, if you’ll all have me. Pls don’t leave me Amy, Pls. I love you so much, Blake xxx.”

Why she would trust someone who would send such an emotionally manipulative letter to the media is beyond my comprehension, but so was her Punky Bleached hair a few weeks ago. This is just like misguided guys who propose via JumboTron at baseball games or whatever and embarrass the hell out of their girlfriends. With V.D. this week, I feel compelled to warn our male readers: Please don’t ever do this.

Neglect the Skin You’re In

We’ve been following Victoria Beckham’s efforts to get us all to “Protect the Skin You’re In” while tanning herself to a crisp. This Is London takes a look at her latest triumph:

Now, they’re blaming it on a tanning booth mishap. But you and I know the real reason: her battery cover came loose. She’s a Cylon!

Isn’t It Black History Month?

ck_nyfw.jpgThe runways at New York’s Fashion Week were tread by 2,278 models, of which fewer than 300 were minorities.

However, in the run-up to their shows, some fashion designers predictably lamented the white state of modeldom:

Earlier this week, fashion designer Peter Som and casting director Jennifer Venditti stood in his office studying five photos of pale, thin teenage girls with dirty-blond hair.

“Weird,” said Mr. Som, scanning the teens in the photos. “They’re all the same.”

After casting the two blondes, Mr. Som asked Ms. Venditti how many ethnic models were on the roster. She told him there were four — two black and two Asian — out of a then-selected cast of 18. “I do not want an all-white cast,” he says. “But there’s always room for improvement.”

In the end, he replaced one of those minority models with another pale blonde, resulting in a ethnic cast of 3 wearing his clothes.

Other runways didn’t fare any better: Calvin Klein’s only black model (out of 21) was Liya Kebede, Donna Karan had only Chanel Iman, and Jill Stuart went 0 for 20. And these are all designers who’ve paid lip service to diversity on the catwalks.

Amy Fisher Breaks Time-Honored “No Takebacks” Rule

NYT, 4/23/99:

With tears in her eyes, Amy Fisher apologized today to Mary Jo Buttafuoco for shooting her in the face seven years ago when she was having an affair with Mrs. Buttafuoco’s husband, Joey.

Mrs. Buttafuoco, who still has the bullet lodged in her neck and suffers from lingering nerve damage, said she accepted the apology and urged the judge to release Ms. Fisher from prison so she could start a new life. The judge accepted her request and reduced Ms. Fisher’s sentence, making her eligible for parole.

NY Post, 2/11/08:

“Mary Jo is a nonentity. People are angry at me because I’m a millionaire. But guess what? So is Mary Jo! She made more millions off of what I did than what I made,” the heartless Fisher rants in an interview with Chaunce Hayden in this week’s Steppin’ Out magazine.

“I feel no sympathy for Mary Jo the multimillionaire! The fact that Mary Jo has a bullet in her head means nothing! I still have silicone in my boobs, and you don’t hear me complaining. She can’t feel her bullet, and I can’t feel my silicone.”

This is where I usually try to say something funny or ironic or both. But what can I possibly add to that? The only thing that comes to mind is: God bless America.
