Tyra Banks has the cover of Entertainment Weekly and in the accompanying article, she talks about how she’s a media-mogul-in-the-making. And what she hates most of all is when people compare her to Oprah:
”In the beginning, I used to hate it,” she says. ”I used to cry at night just because of the pressure. And I didn’t want her thinking that I was saying it.” Banks is also quick to shoot down the connection — respectfully, of course. ”It’s flattering. [But] if I was white, I don’t think they’d be saying it. I think a lot of it has to do with being a black woman.”
Actually, I think it has a lot more to do with Tyra repeatedly copying Oprah’s game. She did a cut-rate “Favorite Things” episode, made her weight gain a national issue, then most recently failed a lie detector test on national television about not wanting to be Oprah, to which she responded:
“Well she’s really rich, c’mon! I want 500 million dollars … I want the money, I want the house in Santa Barbara, the big condo in Chicago. I want the girl’s school in Africa, the gorgeous hair!”
Okay, well to begin with, Oprah is worth a lot more than that. As for the hair, that’s what her closet full of wigs is for.
