Save the Polyurethanes!

natalie_portman_vegan_shoes.jpgNatalie Portman’s line of vegan shoes for designer Té Casan have come out, and the actress explains why the world needs them:

“Basically, I did it out of a lack of choice. Stella McCartney does great shoes, but they’re expensive and very fashiony. I wanted a Mary Jane shoe without leather. I’ve been getting stuff from Target, which is de facto vegan because it’s so cheap. But I did need some shoes that weren’t made of canvas or plastic.”

I know expensive is relative (especially when it comes to shoes) but her flats and pumps retail for about $200 to $300 — so while they may cost half as much as a pair of Stella McCartney’s $600+ sandals, she can’t necessarily claim that she designed these for Jane Slingback.

Secondly, her shoes are made of polyurethane, which is essentially plastic. So now vegans are against plastic? How picky can you be?

(If you’re interested, you can view or pre-order the shoes here.)

I read it more as ‘I’m tired of canvas and plastic shoes becacause they are uncomfortable or something similar’, not ‘I have a vegan responsibility against plastic’

I don’t think she’s against plastic, but although I don’t shop vegan myself I do notice that it’s hard to find classy-looking shoes without leather in them; there’s a fair amount of plastic/polyurethane stuff out there, but a lot of it looks pretty cheap. I have a black “fake patent” pair (I suspect it’s a lot like the ones she’s selling, unfortunately) that scuffed and looked beat-up after just one day of wearing them out shopping, but then they were $10 on sale, so I didn’t expect much.

Just my two cents, for what it’s worth.

Also: like you, I am suspicious of any star(let)’s definition of “expensive”. Especially since the, uh, less expensive ones she’s selling are plastic (probably well put together, though) and yet they’re “limited edition,” which means a lot of people are doubtless buying them up to sell on eBay for much more. So she can’t possibly think of them as affordable for the rest of us. (At least I hope so.)

Vegans are misguided. Humans are not naturally herbivores. Humans that eat herbivorously are inevitably skinny, sickly whiners. Cue Moby. Meat is delicious and makes your belly happy. Live shorter; live better.

RE: Syrynxx, well put, however the consumption of hormones and pushers injected into our factory farmed meat is not ‘natural’ either. These hormones contain carcingens which have been proven to cause cancer. Your caption should read “Live shorter, Live riddled with disease”

I always figured that if I went vegetarian I might live 6 or 7 weeks longer — but those would be the weeks that skinnier folks spend hooked up to tubes and wires in the hospital, just waiting for the end to come. :-)
Then again, a farmer friend once told me that “Vegans don’t live longer. They just look older.

What do you all have against vegan ans vegetarians? They are only trying to make decisions that they feel are right for them. Natalie Portman is not making you give up meat or leather in your shoes. It’s just a personal choice she has made. Plus she’s not saying she against plastic, and even if she was, how is she being a hypocrite?

Hey I love vegetables. I get all my servings every day.

However, veganism has always struck me as somewhat preachy. Natalie Portman may not be donating all the leather from my closet but if she’s going to cash in on the vegan lifestyle, she might as well be honest about how she’s selling plastic shoes for $300.

Hey wait a minute now. Aren’t plastics petroleum based? Isn’t petroleum dead dinosaurs? So does that then mean at one time oil “had a face” as the dead McCartney used to say? Whoa she was a vegan and she’s dead. I’m not and I’m still alive. Huh.

Every time someone tells me they’re a vegetarian, I’m throwing an extra fuzzy baby raccoon into a wood chipper.

  9. 9 jlynn Feb 27th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Is petroleum dead dinosaurs? Anyway, I have no problem finding plastic shoes, and sh-t the price I wind up paying for them they should be leather! And she’s loaded(I assume),I leave Target with knots in stomach hoping someone doesn’t cash check #1224. However it is nice to see someone famous being somewhat conciencious of their finances.
And there isn’t anything wrong with vegans or vegetarians, its their choice and I respect that. But I find often times they don’t respect the choices of us leather wearin carnivores.

Yes oil is dead dinosaurs. And she isn’t being conscientious with her money. $300, $3000, or even $30,000 is less than meaningless to someone in her position. That’s what people like her want you to think. That they are just like you. But they’re not. At least financially.
