Brad Pitt’s Eye Wanders Again

brad_pitt_nola.jpgA friend of mine in Smithville, Tex., spotted Brad Pitt at Wal-Mart the other day, taking a break from shooting his latest movie, The Tree of Life.

After I got over my seething jealousy, I remembered — didn’t Brad Pitt just vow to put his movie career on hold while he’s involved in an effort to rebuild homes in New Orleans?

Indeed he did. When the Today show’s Ann Curry interviewed him just before Christmas, she asked if this recovery effort were more important to him than being a movie star. He said:

“Right now, this is the focus, and we’re going to see this thing through.”

It made me a little gooey inside for a minute — humanitarianism is sexy. But like his marriage to Jennifer Aniston, his focus on the project didn’t last long.

IMDb reports that he’s attached to six upcoming movies in addition to The Tree of Life, while his charity’s website — MakeItRightNOLA.org — says so far they’ve raised enough to build only 79 houses, despite a massive media blitz in December.

You might be thinking “at least he tried,” but I ask you — which does New Orleans need more, his fulfillment of a promise to help the needy or a Being John Malkovich-esque vanity project?

I’d like movie stars to stop being activists. He looks like a little kid in his dad’s hard hat. A little kid that you know, gets laid a lot. What happened to all of his Troy muscles? Do steroids wear off that fast?

The Burn one, and the Benjamin thing look kinda cool. I’ll pass on the rest. Just like all of his other movies.

Let’s keep things in perspective. He is first and foremost a movie star. He doesn’t have to do that other stuff in his spare time. He could just live a completely hedonistic lifestyle. Instead, he tries to do something to help humanity in his spare time. How many of us try to help humanity at all? I think it shows a wonderful human being. One who could not ignore those in pain and misery. Instead he gives when he can. Most people don’t do nearly that. Give him a break. I don’t think one has to give up their entire life for others, but just give a little piece of themselves. If everyone did this the world would be awesome. He does his share. What about the rest of us?

You’re absolutely right. However, I doubt any of us has been on TV touting our humanitarianism and generosity.

I’d rather see celebrities doing humanitarian work than starting thier own fashion line or fragrance or alcohol or albums or…

Don’t Brad and Angie have enough millions that they could put forth in order to build more houses?

Perspective? OK. A guy has a personal fortune of almost $400,000,000. Earned almost completely from what, just 3 or 4 of all the movies he’s made right? How long does it take to make a movie? For the star, several months at most right? If he has so much down time and has to have something to fill it, well than fine. Why trumpet it? Why not just shut up, do your thing and then go home. Since I don’t happen to have half a billion dollars in the bank, I have to spend most of my down time, you know… living. Working, taking the cat to the vet, stuff that Brad’s staff takes care of.

I guess stars have to do this kind of thing because of the enormous good fortune most of these dim-wits have lucked into. Oh and so that some people can sigh, wag their finger, and say what a shame more of us (meaning everyone but me) aren’t like this. Thanks, but I’ll just continue worrying about getting by, and let everyone else worry about themselves. If Brad and his scarecrow want to do good, go ahead, knock yerselves out but why not leave the camera crews at home.

I’m man enough to admit when I’m wrong. As long as I’ve been drinking. But I’ve heard a lot higher than that. Still with that much squid…

Wow, even $150 million is higher than I thought. All those Japanese commercials must really pay off!

Yep. These people make more money than I think people realize. I just want these overpriced peacocks make their stupid movies collect their massive checks and be quiet.

Does anyone really even remember what movies this woman was in? Why does she have so much money?
