President Obama, the New Hair-Splitter

Hat tip to National Public Radio (yes, you read that right…):

“Since the gas lines of the ’70’s, Democrats and Republicans have talked about energy independence, but nothing’s changed except now Exxon’s making $40 billion a year, and we’re paying $3.50 for gas. I’m Barack Obama. I don’t take money from oil companies or Washington lobbyists, and I won’t let them block change anymore. They’ll pay a penalty on windfall profits. We’ll invest in alternative energy, create jobs and free ourselves from foreign oil.”

obama_pointing_small.jpgAnd yet, as Newhouse News Service reports:

… Obama has received tens of thousands of dollars from people in many of the same groups and industries he regularly rails against.

“He may not take money from Political Action Committees or lobbyists, but he is taking interest money,” said Sheila Krumholtz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign finance issues.

“He’s getting a lot of money from individuals representing lawyers and law firms, security firms, real estate and Hollywood,” Krumholtz said.

“You can’t say that he doesn’t take special-interest money.”

State lobbyists and nonwage-earning spouses of lobbyists and lobbying firm employees contributed $115,163 to Obama’s campaign through March 20, according to the center.

People in the oil and gas industries have given $222,309 to Obama. He received $528,765 from the pharmaceutical and health industry, making him the largest recipient of its largesse.

Not that Hillary Clinton or John McCain are much better, but the least we should expect of these goons is a frank admission that they’re bought and paid for, right?

Heather Mills Lies

In today’s Page Six story about Heather Mills getting booed at the Miss USA pageant last week (which Cele|bitchy says didn’t happen, and the video seems to bear that out, unfortunately), Mills is quoted as saying:

“In England, people don’t like me,” she said. “But I’m going to move to America, Los Angeles, hopefully… I’ll be better off in the States.”

Which is why she was condo-hunting in Greenwich Village recently. But earlier the day of the pageant she told a British interviewer:

“You know, I’ve always wanted to live [in the U.S.], but I’ve always said that I can’t live here because I want to keep my daughter near her father, but you know there’s plenty [of] holidays.”

This woman wouldn’t know the truth if you nailed it to her good foot.

Hey! It’s That Guy! (Who Used to Be a Scientologist)

Here at Deceiver we bash celebrities who say one thing and do another, but every once in a while they get it right and should be recognized for it. Such is the case with character actor Jason Beghe, who’s appeared on Numb3rs, Criminal Minds, Veronica Mars, JAG, and dozens of other TV shows and movies over the last 20 years.

He’s hardly a household name, but he’s the biggest celebrity so far who’s stood up and spoken out against Scientology. According to Roger Friedman:

In 2005, Beghe appeared in promotional spots for the Church of Scientology. But now, Beghe has escaped the church after taking courses since 1994. He’s made a video that’s up on YouTube.

This is what he has to say: “Scientology is destructive and a rip-off.”

He also says: “It’s very, very dangerous for your spiritual, psychological, mental, emotional health and evolution. I think it stunts your evolution. If Scientology is real, then something’s f—ed up… It ain’t deliverin’ what it’s promised. It sure has not.”

Here’s the video (NSFW language):

“Let me meet a motherf***ing Clear! I’m Clear, right? I’m declared Clear as a f***ing bell. …From my own experience and from what I’ve seen, I think the further you go up The Bridge, the worse you get.”

Apparently this is just a brief excerpt of a longer interview to come about his experiences with the cult. Good for him. Scientology has not been kind to people who’ve spoken out against it (just ask Paulette Cooper), so it’s not an exaggeration to say Beghe is a brave man. Let’s just hope this inspires some of the other disgruntled Scientologists in Hollywood who’ve been afraid to speak up.

Chaste Stars Just Marketing the Madonna-Whore Complex

miley_cyrus_schoolgirl.jpgTony Sclafani over at MSNBC has a great commentary on how stars who push abstinence are really just making you think about all the sex they’re not having.

First there was Jessica Simpson (whose former chastity I mentioned yesterday) and Britney Spears (who also turned out so well), and now there’s the new guard of chaste musicians like Miley Cyrus, Jordan Sparks, and the Jonas Brothers.

I’m tempted to quote the article wholesale but for now I’ll limit myself to this tidbit:

On the surface, the reason why these performers are taking virginity pledges has to do with religion. But why advertise this particular aspect of religion? Because by talking about how they’re not having sex, they’ve discovered a sly way to market their sexuality. There’s an unsettling exhibitionism in all of this. Since these artists are putting issues about their sexuality front-and-center, it’s hard to see them and not immediately think about their sex lives. Do we really need to know Joe Jonas isn’t getting any?

He’s like 18 years old. I don’t care if it’s legal, it’s still pervy.

It’s a Short Road From Obsessed Fan to Plagiarist

harry_potter.jpgYou give some people an inch, they take a mile and run into fantasy land.

Steven Vander Ark, a school librarian and obsessed Harry Potter fan, developed the Harry Potter Lexicon, an online encyclopedia of all things Hogwarts.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the hugely successful wizard series, praised his efforts and said it was so comprehensive, it even helped jog her memory while she was writing.

So what happened to all this goodwill?

Vander Ark decided to cash in. He received an advance from RDR Books to publish his encyclopedia, but oops, forgot to check with Rowling first.

So she sued him. As you do when people you try to help then try to steal from you.

Seriously, who does that?
