President Obama, the New Hair-Splitter

YouTube Preview Image

Hat tip to National Public Radio (yes, you read that right…):

“Since the gas lines of the ’70’s, Democrats and Republicans have talked about energy independence, but nothing’s changed except now Exxon’s making $40 billion a year, and we’re paying $3.50 for gas. I’m Barack Obama. I don’t take money from oil companies or Washington lobbyists, and I won’t let them block change anymore. They’ll pay a penalty on windfall profits. We’ll invest in alternative energy, create jobs and free ourselves from foreign oil.”

obama_pointing_small.jpgAnd yet, as Newhouse News Service reports:

… Obama has received tens of thousands of dollars from people in many of the same groups and industries he regularly rails against.

“He may not take money from Political Action Committees or lobbyists, but he is taking interest money,” said Sheila Krumholtz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign finance issues.

“He’s getting a lot of money from individuals representing lawyers and law firms, security firms, real estate and Hollywood,” Krumholtz said.

“You can’t say that he doesn’t take special-interest money.”

State lobbyists and nonwage-earning spouses of lobbyists and lobbying firm employees contributed $115,163 to Obama’s campaign through March 20, according to the center.

People in the oil and gas industries have given $222,309 to Obama. He received $528,765 from the pharmaceutical and health industry, making him the largest recipient of its largesse.

Not that Hillary Clinton or John McCain are much better, but the least we should expect of these goons is a frank admission that they’re bought and paid for, right?

Every politician does it,Obama insists that he is running a ‘clean’ campaign. He forgets that in this day in age, you can easily track any donor.

Don’t worry, Pastafarian. Those of us smart enough to grasp the mind-boggling concept of nuance will be juuuuust fine without you. You and the rest of the Big Boys’ Sarcasm Club can just hang out here and be the cool kids while the rest of the country jumps ahead a few decades.

“They’ll pay a penalty on windfall profits”

    Communism- YAY!

Between Obi-wan and Hill-”take from you for the greater good”-Clinton I can’t wait! I’m tired of having to think for myself. I’m tired of having to work to make money for myself. I’m tired of having to make my own choices.

I hope I can make it into the Big Boys Sarcasm Club too!

Oh you got me there MC Escher. You know, you being so much more advanced than me mentally and all. I only “hope” to “change” so you’ll let me live in this utopia. Of course it’ll probably require some sort of re-education. Will there be some kind of camp you’ll send me to? So I can well, concentrate?

Republicans are hoping, praying, even more than you that Obama is the democratic candidate. They’re gonna mop the floor with that guy. You know it.

“You can’t say that he doesn’t take special-interest money.”

This article accuses Obama of taking special interest money because people who donate to his campaign work in those industries. So since my sister is a doctor, if she donates to Bush, Clinton or Obama then they can claim they are receiving money from Health care special interests? And since I work for a large engineering and construction firm that is often accused of being in Bush’s back pocket and if I make a donation to Obama’s campaign then that’s supposed to be the same as my employer making the contribution? That’s asinine.

I have donated to candidates in the past and you are required to disclose your employer. But that hardly means that I am “representing” my employer through my personal and individual donation.

Keep reading … just one more paragraph. The operative phrase is “State lobbyists and nonwage-earning spouses of lobbyists and lobbying firm employees.”

In your analogy, if you or your spouse were a professional lobbyist for the National Association of Home Builders — or if your sister (or her spouse) were a professional lobbyist for a big HMO, we’d have a different hill of beans, no?

Another number from the Center for Responsive Politics is $193,600,733. This is the total number they say that Obama has raised so far. If you add up the other three numbers in this article and calculate for a percentage… its about .5%.

I still think this article makes an issue out of a non-issue. You can check out all of the numbers that from the Center for Responsive Politics at opensecrets.org

Or you can just do it the easy way. Figure he’s a politician, and he’s lying. Easy no?

    Vote Libertarian.

I’m gonna. McCain’ll have this wrapped up by August. And since thats usually how I vote anyway, what the Hell. Who the president is has very, very little direct effect on me. Unless they promise to pay my mortgage, then they got my vote. Any takers? Hillary? Barack? C’mon it’s not that much.
