No, it’s not. He and The Police have a huge fan base. Venues around the world sell out completely every time he tours as a solo act or with The Police. So while they’re damaging the environment, the economic benefits of their travel, performances and oversall success also directly and indirectly help thousands (if not tens of thousands) of people make a living.

Being green isn’t about not having any impact on the environment, unless you’re a total radical. It’s about being aware of your impact and doing what you can to minimize that impact while balancing it against the realities of life.

A consistant philosophy of fighting global warming i would be for Sting to STOP touring, release all his performances ONLY via DVD or broadcast (Internet, Radio, TV, Cable) and start hammering his own peers (The Stones, U2, etc.) to do the same as their travelling is part of the over mobile, over energy consuming culture. If he really believed it.

Good points, as usual! While I can accept a life-plan that includes making restitution in many beneficent ways to make up for what you use, speaking from once living on the inside of the music entertainment biz, concerts are one of the most energy-crunching activites you can imagine. From tour busses running constantly outside the venue from arrival to departure, to all the extravances in between, the energy and product waste is astronomical. In all fairness, the entertainment biz does create many jobs for many creative people. But pointing out the rampant waste it propagates does put the greenie-fingerpointers in the music biz in a very unflattering light, that they now have to either cover up or make ammends for in the public eye.
