Entertainment Tonight Standing by Brangelina Birth Story Despite Facts

angelina_pregnant.jpgEntertainment Tonight still hasn’t issued a full-on retraction for its erroneous report last Friday that Angelina Jolie had given birth in France.

The best it could deliver was this, sent from the law firm Lavely & Singer to media outlets on Monday:

“A random individual has engaged in a scheme to intentionally harm my client and deceive her fans, the public and the media through illegal and tortuous impersonation of Ms. Jolie’s longtime assistant, Holly [Goline].”

Now the Associated Press — which picked up the story after ET ran with it — has discovered that the television program knew the story was all kinds of fake before they even aired it.

Producers at ET were contacted by the real Holly Goline hours before the episode broadcast and the report was denied wholesale.

Shortly after the story was posted but several hours before the broadcast aired, Goline told “Entertainment Tonight” that she was not the person with whom they had been corresponding, a person with direct knowledge of the conversation told The Associated Press. That account was confirmed by another person close to Jolie.

“‘Entertainment Tonight’ was told before the broadcast that their information came from an impostor,” said the second person. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

The people said there were several conversations Friday, by e-mail, text message and telephone, between Goline and “Entertainment Tonight.” Meanwhile, the story was quickly challenged by several other celebrity news outlets.

The TV show stood by its story Friday night, with host Mary Hart saying on the air, “Just this morning, a source who says she was inside the delivery room tells us yes, the babies were born and yes, mother and babies are fine.”

Now that’s what I like to call journalistic ethics. I know such a concept and the gossip media aren’t exactly peanut butter and jelly, but short of Angelina and her big bump being photographed this week, what is it going to take for ET to cop to their mistake?

Hey, Al Gore Needs to Put Food on the Table Too

As everyone knows, WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE FROM GLOBAL WARMING. What you might not know is that in the process, you can do something for an unfortunate soul who could really use your help. Namely, Al Gore!

Al is the chairman of Generation Investment Management, a company that… er… I’ll let them tell it:

Generation has built a global research platform to integrate sustainability research into fundamental equity analysis. We focus on the economic, environmental, social, and governance risks and opportunities that can materially affect a company’s ability to sustain profitability and deliver returns. Our research plays an important role in forming our views on the quality of the business, the quality of management, and valuation.

Exactly! And as part of all that, uh, stuff, GIM has just bought a $13 million stake in Camco International Ltd. And what do they do? They sell carbon offsets. You know, the things we’re all supposed to buy to make up for, say, flying all over the world in private jets and owning mansions that use 20 times more energy than the national average. Carbon offsets = Healed planet. Yay!

Now, some people want you to believe that Al Gore is “spreading global warming hysteria to benefit his own wallet.” Nothing could be further from the truth. He is selflessly devoted to saving our dying planet. He’s saving us from ourselves! And hey, if a few dollars happen to fall into his pocket here and there, is that so wrong? What have you got against an average joe just trying to make a living? Shame on you. I’ll bet you haven’t bought a single carbon offset today, have you? Tsk, tsk.

(Hat tip to all the Deceiver readers who sent this in)

Katie Holmes Can ‘Sniff Out Phonies,’ Director Says

tomkatie.jpg According to Broadway producer Eric Falkenstein, Katie Holmes’s bullcrap radar is a finely tuned instrument.

Falkenstein is the big cheese behind the upcoming All My Sons production, starring Katie, in New York.

“Katie’s not a celebrity type,” Falkenstein says. “She’s done brilliant work in films like Pieces of April and The Ice Storm.

“Ann starts out as a simple, sweet, average Midwesterner, and by the finale gets up the gumption to stand and confront what’s wrong,” he adds.

He calls Holmes “a natural sweetheart who can sniff out phonies … Katie basically has that exact moral fiber [of her character in the play].”

Are we talking about the same Katie Holmes? The one who auditioned for the part of Mrs. Tom Cruise three years ago (a bit of a profile-increasing move, no?) and was swiftly indoctrinated into her husband’s religion cult of Scientology — some of the most public phonies around — which seems to have turned her into a hollow shell of a woman.

One can only hope that, like her character, in the end she wizens up and confronts the travesty of what’s happened to her life.
