Their Carbon Footprint Wears a Size Eleventy Shoe

f21_recycle_tee.jpgFashionista.com makes an excellent point about something that is becoming more and more pervasive in fashion: the commodification of the “green” movement.

Lame-o teenybopper heaven Urban Outfitters is one of the worst offenders of this trend, but today I’ve got the budget-conscious retailer Forever 21 in my crosshairs.

The store’s most egregious wrong is a recent line of environmentally-themed graphic tees.

Not only are some of these shirts made in Asia in plants that process literally tons of synthetic materials (take this “Going Green” bag, made from 100% pure polypropylene), but the clothes then have to be shipped thousands of miles to be distributed to American stores.

Ooh, let’s all give Forever 21 a fat round of applause — they made exactly three tees from organic cotton. The air feels cleaner already.

I think slapping the word ‘green’ on something is code for…”I can sleep at nite because my conscience is clear.”

Why don’t we call the ‘green’ movement what it is…an industry

    Bravo, jj. Bravo.

Yes, the new way to save the Earth is by buying stuff (click here).

It seems to me that the only imported shirt is the Cheetah one; the tree hugging and recycling one appear to be made in the US. Still doesn’t make it more than a pure gimmick to jump on the green bandwagon.

Target has a whole wall of ‘go green’ shirts with fun and cute little recycling slogans and the like on them. Is ANYTHING in Target made in the US?

Going “Green” has become the next “trend”. I am assuming that if you stand around a mall, or something of the sorts, long enough, that you could probably find a tween (or hell, even someone older) wearing that shirt and yet breaking some ‘green’ law. I’d put $ on it.

Stuidity like this is why I instituted an underwear-only dress code in my office. Morale went up as well so it was a two-fer-win situation.

You gotta look at the bright side. The faster something hits the “mainstream” the faster it goes away. Movements are like that. Hippies lasted what? 5 years? Disco? Maybe 6 or 7. Hair bands and then grunge music lasted all of 5 years each. Remember the clear cola phase? How about counting carbs? This is really no different. Not at all. This all started when? Four or five years ago? The end is definitely near. I’m no sociologist. I just pretend to be one when I’m here.

Being green sells lately. They are just putting the damn recycle sign on the t-shirt, that’s all.
    pathetic but true.

I want my Crystal Pepsi back Pasta! But of course it’s a fad. Anybody remember “Save the Whales” ? Captain Planet and the Planeteers? When climate change was global warming? Don’t worry, they’ll re-brand it and sell it again.

I remember Captain Planet! He’s our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!
