Today’s WTF Moment: Tila Tequila Takes Credit for Legalized Gay Marriage

tila_tequila_loveguru.jpgAs a MySpace phenom and the star of MTV’s dating show A Shot of Love, Tila Tequila is basically Generation Y’s platonic ideal.

She also has delusions of grandeur, because she thinks her TV show where she pretends to be bisexual is the real reason gay marriage has been legalized in California.

MTV reality queen Tila Tequila says she played a part in California recently dropping its ban on gay marriage.

“It is because of me — I definitely think [my show] has helped the movement,” she told Usmagazine.com at the Hollywood premiere of The Love Guru on Wednesday.

“Before it came out, everyone was still a little apprehensive about [same sex relationships],” she said. “Then they realized, ‘Wow, everyone is really into this stuff, and it is fine.’ The next thing you know, [gay marriage] is legal.”

Guys, she’s not even gay! Not to mention, I somehow think the California Supreme Court has better things to do than watch MTV, unless they’re all former cast members on The Hills (which I’ll grant is entirely possible).

Pinheads for the (Un)Ethical Treatment of Interns

I honestly can’t improve on this, so I’m just going to rip off reprint the recent commentary of Memphis, Tennessee photographer Mike Brown as it appeared in his hometown newspaper, The Commercial Appeal.

Just remember: These are the same activists who think it’s unethical to wear a fur-trimmed parka, eat a chicken nugget, or test cancer meds on lab rats.

peta-interns.jpg

Ashley Byrne, a Washington, D.C.-based campaign coordinator with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), talks with Memphis police officers during a recent demonstration outside City Hall that coincided with World Vegetarian Week.

When officers inquired about the well-being of intern Shawn Herbold (bottom) and volunteer Thomas Olsen, a sweat-soaked Herbold replied that she was in pain and feeling nauseated from the heat after being wrapped in cellophane for 30 minutes, and also asked how much longer she needed to stay there. Byrne let her know it wouldn’t be much longer and left her under the hot afternoon sun for 30 minutes more while debating with the officers.

PETA would never treat a cow that way, but I guess it’s OK for an intern. Many organizations that focus on extremes could take note that leading through example makes more impact than demonstrating with hypocrisy.

If it seems like I’m harshing on PETA a good deal lately, that’s only because I’m actually paying close attention to what they do. And they have it coming.

I’m considering starting up a special section of Deceiver just for animal-rights hypocrites.

What do you think, gentle readers? Good idea or not?

You Don’t Mess with the Xenu

Tom Cruise sure is protective of his late father. He’s lashing out at TV psychiatrist Drew Pinksy, AKA Dr. Drew, who has this to say in next month’s Playboy (courtesy of Page Six):

“A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood — maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.”

To which Cruise’s attack dog attorney Bert Fields replied:

“This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels.”

Yeah, Dr. Drew is a Nazi! Or maybe he just reads Parade Magazine. Back in 2006, Cruise told them the following about his dad:

“[He] was a bully and a coward… the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life — how he’d lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang!

“For me, it was like, ‘There’s something wrong with this guy. Don’t trust him. Be careful around him.’ There’s that anxiety.”

Sounds to me like Cruise was saying he suffered a very deep emptiness and serious neglect during childhood. Maybe even some abuse. Achtung, Bertie!

Of course, a cynic would say that Cruise isn’t worried about people defaming his dad, but he’s just lashing out, as usual, at anybody who questions Scientology. But that couldn’t be it. How dumb would it be to alienate the public again, just when people are starting to forget how creepy and cynically underhanded the cult is? Tom Cruise is smarter than to give his detractors even more ammunition. Right?

Justin Timberlake Buys a Golf Course

justin_timberlake_golf.jpgDumb.

Self-styled environmentalist Justin Timberlake has purchased a golf course in Memphis to “save” it from developers:

He confesses he only “got into” the sport six years ago, when he was 20 — but the childhood trip to the Memphis, Tennessee, course inspired him to rescue it from being turned into apartments.

Timberlake tells talk show host Jay Leno, “My dad taught me to hit a golf ball on this course, when I was 12 years old. They were going to auction it off and turn it into a development, so we swooped in and got it.”

The singer is currently battling his mother’s plans to name the course after the famous family, adding, “My mom wants it to be called ‘Timberlake Trails’ or something like that.”

Just leaving behind his various not-so-green habits, does he realize that operating a golf course requires a lot of gasoline? As far as I know there aren’t any solar-powered lawnmowers to keep the grass so evenly trimmed, although there’s a million-dollar idea right there.
