You Don’t Mess with the Xenu

Tom Cruise sure is protective of his late father. He’s lashing out at TV psychiatrist Drew Pinksy, AKA Dr. Drew, who has this to say in next month’s Playboy (courtesy of Page Six):

“A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood — maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.”

To which Cruise’s attack dog attorney Bert Fields replied:

“This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels.”

Yeah, Dr. Drew is a Nazi! Or maybe he just reads Parade Magazine. Back in 2006, Cruise told them the following about his dad:

“[He] was a bully and a coward… the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life — how he’d lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang!

“For me, it was like, ‘There’s something wrong with this guy. Don’t trust him. Be careful around him.’ There’s that anxiety.”

Sounds to me like Cruise was saying he suffered a very deep emptiness and serious neglect during childhood. Maybe even some abuse. Achtung, Bertie!

Of course, a cynic would say that Cruise isn’t worried about people defaming his dad, but he’s just lashing out, as usual, at anybody who questions Scientology. But that couldn’t be it. How dumb would it be to alienate the public again, just when people are starting to forget how creepy and cynically underhanded the cult is? Tom Cruise is smarter than to give his detractors even more ammunition. Right?

Ah, this explains “Valkyrie” and why it hasn’t been screened. Tom has Daddy issues with Nazis.

P.S. TC can keep his attack lawyer at bay … I have a live dragon and I’m not afraid to use it.

  2. 2 Chronic Malanga Jun 12th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

On one hand, Dr. Drew or any TV shrink should know better than to diagnose people they don’t even know publically. On the other, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Tom Cruise is an idiot and his cult is pathetic. The more he defends it, the less respect I have for him. I’ve gone beyond sympathy (ages ago) for any fool that is drawn to this, no matter what their Daddy issues.

Get a load of the Flickr photostream linked from the picture at the bottom of this post. I didn’t know they still had naked bike rides in our nation’s capital! How come Associated Press photographers don’t have this kind of access?

  4. 4 Pastafarian Jun 12th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Go ahead. Click on that picture of the creepy dude holding the sign. Some of those protesters SHOULD NOT be naked. Not even at home. In a closet. With the light off. I would support the immediate withdrawal of our military from everywhere in the known universe if some of them would just put on a robe. Sorry off topic.

    Tom Cruise is kooky. Better?

  5. 5 Backwoods Jun 12th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Wait a minute. Didn’t a certain unqualified performer (Tom) pretend to diagnose others (Brooke)? The last time we heard garbage like this was from Tom himself.

  6. 6 Chronic Malanga Jun 12th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

    Backwoods… EXCELLENT point.

  7. 7 Discordia Jun 12th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

Backwoods and ChronicMalanga: Didn’t TC also nastily lecture Matt Lauer on the dangers of psychotropic drugs and psychiatry/psychology in general?

  8. 8 Zorg the Defender Jun 12th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Don’t be so glib. You don’t know the history of Scientology. I know the history of Scientology. I’ve studied it.

(Psst. He’s paraphrasing Cruise berating Matt Lauer about psychiatry.)

Simon: Thanks for the info. And, just like most zealous apologists when they are called upon to present facts in a sane and calm manner they can’t do it.

I am so sick of seeing religious intolerants. You want to see some Intolerance? Ok. I can be as intolerant as the next guy. I think all of you morons who believe a girl was impregnated by a GOD are idiots. Oh but wait…This child walked on water, turned water into wine, fed thousands of people with one fish, died and rose 3 days later. omg. You remind me of that Star Trek episode where people warped We The PEOPLE so badly they totally lost the meaning. Couldn’t even say it correctly. How DARE you bash any religion? Jesus told you not to judge yet here you are, judging. He who hath no sin, cast the first stone. So are we to believe you freaks are all sin-FREE? SHUT THE FACK UP. Your religion is crazier than scientology yet you point fingers stupidly not realizing MOST of your fingers are pointing right back at you. Do you think you’ll get a higher reward in Heaven by IGNORING Jesus’ command for none of us to Judge others? No you won’t, you’ll be cast down. Get a life people. We have people dying every day in this hideous war. Change the record, it’s become so pitifully old, it’s enough to drive sane people crazy.

  13. 13 Chronic Malanga Jun 13th, 2008 at 3:52 am

LOL, Discordia, the Matt Lauer thing was plain creepy.

Honestly, though, you have to wonder what sort of hold the cult has on people when you have the whole world screaming “CULT!” at you, making you a laughing stock, and banning you in Germany. Not to mention, if you read up on L. Ron Hubbard, he was a BS merchant all his life and plainly stated that he needed to start a religion in order to make money.

  14. 14 Chronic Malanga Jun 13th, 2008 at 8:44 am

O5Vette, you assume that all of us actually believe in anything.

Furthermore, we are merely criticizing Scientology and its very obvious faults, like…you know, blatantly taking advantage of the gullible. No one is out killing them, or telling them they can’t believe what they want to believe. No one is forcing their own beliefs on anyone else. That is intolerance. Disagreement, dislike, or disrespect do not equate to intolerance.

  15. 15 Hurricane Jun 13th, 2008 at 10:26 am

It’s not that Dr. Drew is even making a diagnosis in the formal sense of the word. He is doing what everybody does and that is form an opinion about somebody based on what he sees and hears. There is nothing wrong with that. And besides, he is actually correct about his opinion.

  16. 16 Mike Bratton Jun 13th, 2008 at 10:37 am

    If I may…

Jesus’ command (for those of us who are Christians) not to judge others is a command not to presume to stand in ultimate judgement of others. Unfortunately, many who use that phraseology to condemn others forget that it resides in a larger Scriptural context. For example, just a few verses after Jesus says, “Judge not, that ye be not judged,” He says, “first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”

Scientology is more than a mote in another’s eye, it is a fraud–a hodgepodge of science-fiction plot devices meant to feed delusions of grandeur. Just as it is not “judgement” to warn someone away from a collapsed bridge, it is not “judgement” to warn someone away from a false, human-constructed belief system, whether that system be Islam, Mormonism, or Scientology.

And yes, I’m remarkably intolerant. I cannot tolerate faux “faiths” that presume to be a substitute for a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. But before you break out the bashing sticks, just remember that Jesus Himself was quintessentially “intolerant.” To quote him thusly and like so, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” There is no other option.

    –Mike

There is nothing wrong at all with judging people. It is one of our most basic traits and is there for a reason. The liberal PC crowd continues to try to force change that should not be made. For example, there is a difference between males and females (recall Larry Summers if you will). Not judging is where the trouble begins. It is why their idealogy is a failed and dangerous one.

  21. 21 Discordia Jun 13th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

ChronicMalanga: L. Ron was also the crappiest science-fiction writer ever. Case in point: Battlefield Earth.

  22. 22 jlynn Jun 13th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Why would you pick Mormons as your go to Christ believin’ religion? My obvious choices would have been Christianity or Catholicism. Mormons believe in Christ and all, but it’s kind of obscure. And if your going to rant about a religion believing in a girl being impregnated by God (not a God, the God. This isn’t Greek mythology), shouldn’t you include all of them. Yeah, people are dying in a war, what the hell does that have to do with your point! The only thing people can talk about is the war, will that change things?

  23. 23 jlynn Jun 14th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Man, The White House sure has some nice views, huh?

  24. 24 MDP Jun 15th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Scientology is not a religion! I hate it when someone says that they have a right to their own religious freedoms. Yes, they would. But Scientology is a cult and therefore immune to any “freedom of religion” aspect.

    Quote: Tom Cruise
“I mean you can be Catholic and be a Scientologist. You can be Jewish and be a Scientologist. But we’re just Scientologists.”

So, I can believe that God created the world (Catholic view) and Xenu did too? The views are diametrically opposed.

That should prove Scientology is full of lies. So I can be Muslim and Christian? Buddhist and Catholic? Wait, that doesn’t make sense. So who/what do Scientologists worship? I mean every religion seems to have some deity they hold in high regard. Do they worship Xenu? If so, like I said previously you can’t believe in two different views of creation. If they don’t worship Xenu then who is their deity?

It seems Scientology only worships the All Mighty Dollar and is using the word “religion” to gain access to tax free status.

  25. 25 The Claw Jun 16th, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Scientology isn’t a religion OR a cult. It’s a criminal enterprise. It’s no more religious in nature than the Mafia.
