Obama Breaks Promise to Use Public Campaign Cash

barack_obama.jpgSen. Barack Obama announced this morning via web video that he will be opting out of using public funds for his presidential campaign, so he can put his campaign “in your hands like no other campaign before.”

“We’ve made the decision not to participate in the public financing system for the general election… We face opponents who’ve become masters at gaming this broken system. John McCain’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are fueled by contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs. And we’ve already seen that he’s not going to stop the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups, who will spend millions and millions of dollars in unlimited donations.”

Well yes, but then again, ABC News points out that last year, it was a different story altogether:

Obama wrote: “In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election. My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge. If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”

Just an educated guess that it has something to do with how last year he was a longshot contender, and this year he’s the Dalai Bama.

And guys? Help us keep Deceiver nonpartisan. McCain is up to his eyeballs in debt and we’re expecting there’s going to be good hypocritical grist for the mill. If you hear of something, hit us up at tips@deceiver.com.

I hardly think that qualifies McCain as a hypocrite. $100k is probably his monthly rotating balance that gets paid in full. The guy is loaded, so I think a little perspective is in order. There are plenty of better things that make McCain look bad.

Well so much for standing on principle and keeping his word to the American people huh? Blame the ‘broken system’ for the broken promise. Some change Barak.

I wonder what it must be like to sweat a $100,000 credit card balance when your wife has $100,000,000 in the bank. Must be awful.

    This guy is scary.

God Obama is such a fraud. I wonder when people will finally realize this fact. If the MSM has anything to do about it then never….

this is the most entertaining little site i’ve seen on mccain’s hypocrisy in a while:

  7. 7 carmen Jun 19th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

get a life, you are twisting the truth…he never promised anything, he said he would discuss it if McCain would also accept it and they never got to that level..

  8. 8 The Oversneer Jun 19th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Carmen: he never promised anything, he said he would discuss it if McCain would also accept it and they never got to that level

That’s funny … The New York Times called it a “promise” last year:

“The promises by Mr. McCain, Republican of Arizona, and Mr. Obama, Democrat of Illinois, are an effort to resuscitate part of the ailing public financing system for presidential campaigns” …

    Oh… and ABC News reports:

In November 2007, Obama answered “Yes” to Common Cause when asked “If you are nominated for President in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?”

(Note: John McCain told reporters today: “We will take public financing.”)

I totally sent a tip in about Obama. Deceiver’s tip checking team is less than vigilant!

Don’t worry holly wont I’m sure McCain will give you plenty of material. The man can’t help himself when it comes to pandering to whoever he’s talking to. His big problem right now is that he can’t get any face time. The media is still on its Obama crush.

  11. 11 Rocko Jun 19th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Funny, Obama takes massive amounts of private funding but he’s not beholden unto anyone? No wonder he wants to be President, he’s already acting like the government. Taking and taking in money and if you want to know what he’s done for you, don’t worry about it. He’s got your best interests at heart.

But I can’t says I blame him. If I was getting oodles of private funds why would I want to limit myself to public money? Especially with the price of oil going up and making those environment destroying private jet flights even more expensive. Oh excuse me, I meant the price of those off-eetting carbon credits he must be buying increase in price.

Taking public money would be shooting himself in the foot. You want a person that can reevaluate situations based on their current context rather than what you’ve locked yourself into before, if you can even call “promise to reach an agreement” even locking into something.

  13. 13 Scott F. Jun 19th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

“You want a person that can reevaluate situations based on their current context rather than what you’ve locked yourself into before”

That’s the most creative way I’ve ever heard someone describe lying. Bravo.

“I know I swore on my life I wouldn’t cheat on you again baby, but I reevaluated the situation based on the current context, and just didn’t feel that keeping that promise was in my best interests at this point in time.”

Watch out people, Obama is not portraying what he really is. He is to be very feared, he has disproved himself time after time in his speeches. I hope the people who are so mesmorized by his personality wake up soon to reality. Who wants a man for president who refuses to say the pledge of allegiance, put his hand on his heart while every good american will do it. He is a fake people…. God I hope he does not make, I pray every night for that. I beleive there is some good in him but no way as president of the USA. Did you know that in the office of his campainers, there is a big picture of Chavez on the wall? That tells a lot doesn’t it?.

Wow…when was it a crime to change your mind and select an alternative game plan? Most of you are just devising a reason to hate. Let’s get real unless any of us are wealthy then let’s get wise. Between gas prices, food prices, mortgage corruption (as if that wasn’t going on when everyone could actually pay their house note), and everyone’s job on the line, you would think that we would all be ready for someone who would attempt to go against the norm. Oh, with all the votes Obama received, then I get we are. We finally have a active and interesting campaign, so without sounding one-sided, how about “may the best man that has OUR best interest in mind to fix this mess, win!!!”

  16. 16 Kurt Vile Jun 20th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

You forgot “secret Muslim,” “Hussein,” and “flag pin,” Celizanne. However, I do agree that Obama doesn’t have the integrity required to uphold the dignity of the office of the President. Me? I’m voting for the former POW who supports waterboarding.

  17. 17 Pastafarian Jun 20th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Water boarding? Is that like boogie boarding? Do they still call it that? I prefer tubing.

  18. 18 Aleric Jun 20th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Another Ethical Domino drops for Obama showing he is just like all the other lying politicians and the Obamaites try and spin it to show he is still pure. Typical Elitist Democrats.

  19. 19 Sami Jun 20th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

    Oh for goodness sake!

You know very well that if he had stayed with public funding the Republicans would have this campaign in the bag!

McCain says he will accept public funding, but add that total to the extra funds that his rich supporters will use to malign, campaign and advertise on his behalf and Obama may as well throw in the towel.

The Republican’s have done this before and they are doing again…eg: adverts during the primary campaign and now recently released inflamatory toys. McCain swears innocence but has not spoken up against it. This is all part of the reason why Obama needs to forgo public funding, so he can at least attempt to answer some of the rubbish that will be aimed at his campaign.

  20. 20 Pastafarian Jun 20th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

McCain has rich supporters?!? Lucky for him because you just know none of Obama’s supporters are wealthy.

  21. 21 Scott F. Jun 21st, 2008 at 1:36 am

Sami – Sorry bro, but it’s an urban legend that Republicans have gobs and gobs more money to campaign with than Democrats. It’s a good strategy for the Dems to keep people thinking that though, as it provides a ready-made excuse if you lose an election.

One of the reasons Slick Willy was so successful was because he and his team could scare up funds like no other. You have to remember that the 3 largest demographic contributers to the Democrats are trial lawyers, labor unions, and teachers unions. Then you’ve got all that Hollywood and Manhattan money. We can’t forget George Soros, who’s practically a nation unto himself financially, and has pumped more money into the DNC than … well, than I’ve got a good analogy for.

Before anyone tries to imply I’m taking sides here, I’m a Libertarian, and I think they’re all pricks. I will most likely vote for McCain, because he regularly pisses off both the Democrats and his own party, so he must be doing something right. Things like this story are what I hate about Obama. He’s just like Clinton was when he ran in ‘92, all about ‘change’ and being above politics somehow, but in the end they’re both just as calculating as the rest of them, if not more so. All I can hear when people talk about Obama is, “Same substandard product, but it’s got a schnazzy new packaging.”

This man is really scary, he not only doesn’t tell the truth, he makes it up going forward. I don’t trust him!
