Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova was bashed in the Brazilian press as too fat after walking the runway in the Cia Maritima show during Sao Paolo Fashion Week:
An article in a Brazilian paper about the leggy 5′11″ Kurkova described how “shocked” the audience was when she appeared looking uncharacteristically chubby with “cellulite on her butt.”
Btw, the photo at right was taken on Tuesday in Brazil. Yeah, what a fattie, right?
The thing that gets me is that the same Brazilian press was up in arms after Ana Carolina Reston, a local model, died of anorexia in 2006. Standing at 5′7″, she was 88 pounds at her death. It was pretty much 24-hour news coverage at the time:
“Take care for your children because their loss is irreparable,” Reston’s mother, Miriam, told the O Globo newspaper. “Nothing can make the pain go away. No money in the world is worth the life of your child.”
…
“I noticed something was wrong when she returned from Japan,” Miriam told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper. “She was too thin when she returned and when I told her to eat something, she would say: ‘Mom please don’t fight with me; there is nothing wrong with me, I’m fine.’”
It’s entirely possible that the some members of the Cia Maritima audience were as horrified as the newspaper claims, but is broadcasting that opinion news? I would say this sort of criticism of someone as gorgeous as she is qualifies as a mixed media message.

I guess non-Brazilian models can die of anorexia so long as Brazilian models are curvy and have kids by Mick Jagger out of wedlock (Luciana Gimenez Morad) or bounce from man-to-man (Gisele Bundchen).
It’s pretty f***** up, but I think one of the things that they were railing on her about was the pose. America is big on tits, so American models tend to just their fronts out. Brazil is all about the ass, so they pose with their backsides out. It’s possible that this is part of the reason they were so vicious “Oh, look at her paunchy stomach, why is it being pushed out so far.” Still, its a terrible situation and makes me angry.
Too curvy for what? Being a pipe cleaner?
yes, she is way out of control
i’d have to give her a special liquid protein diet — for her own good of course…and the children, always para los niños
What the F*** they are smoking in Brazil? I am sure there’s some hatred against here that we don’t understand.
This world’s really going down the s***hole. I knew the world was shallow, but now it’s to a dangerous extent.
Being a young woman with body image issues, I feel outraged and disgusted.
What kind of message is this sending to young women(sometimes even young men)? What, now just being thin isn’t good enough either? Wow. Way to insult about three-fourths of the population. Yeah, nice one.
I think I may have thrown up a little in my mouth— and not even on purpose.
Sickos.
she looks fine, she’s not 80 pounds like the rest of the pin thin models are. so what? if that’s “fat” then sign my “obese” ass up.. because i don’t look like that and i wish i did!
I am thinking along the same lines as Toubrouk. There is probably something about her as an individual that they collectively hate. Whatever the reason, it’s messed up.
Unfortunately that’s the price of having the most beautiful women in the world, they can’t have an ounce of fat! hahahaha, the comments are pretty distorted, but as a Brazilian I completely understand why they got so much on her back, take a couple of facts for example:
- The growth of bulimia and anorexia is the highest in the world in Brazil, losing possibly only to Argentina
- Brazil has the biggest market for amphetamines and appetite suppressants
- Her pose did not help
Seriously, Brazil is a coastline country, everybody spends a good part of their time at the beach, and are extremely self-conscious about not only their bodies, but also everyones. It’s a thing of status in a socially unfair country, if your body is tight your rich, if not, you don’t have time to work out, thus are poor…
The mentality there cannot be in any way compared to in here in the States, where you can be, and advocate to be and look, as you desire. Brazilians are caught up to image tightly, because of these and many other reasons. Take the choosing of Naomi Campbell as spokesperson and face for most of the Brazilian government’s campaign…
Well I guess the Deceiver is just about as credible as all the people they make fun of, because they’re only showing one picture. The other two were a DISASTER from behind.
No, she may not be fat by real people standards, but she’s too fat for the runway. Get over it.
Oh, yeah … she’s a real porker, that one. Ohmigod, she must have graduated all the way to a size TWO. Somebody call Weight Watchers!
BS, I have seen a lot of photo’s of Brazilian girls on the beach and most of the girls have more weight on their back side than she has on most of her body.
Karolina here is what you do, tell the socialist marxist newspapers in SA to STFU and come back to civilization where you are appreciated.
I am moving to Brazil to date fat women.
Check out this picture…

She probably is a disaster from behind. But only because she probably has one of those bony old lady asses, where you can see her entire pelvis. I don’t know why “super” models always have to look like holocaust survivors. I also don’t know why I know what an old lady’s ass looks like.
“Well I guess the Deceiver is just about as credible as all the people they make fun of, because they’re only showing one picture. The other two were a DISASTER from behind.

No, the media needs to get over it. She was hired, she did her job, they should be criticizing the clothes. I’m sure that’s what the designer wants, he puts all this work and effort into the design and people are out there complaining about the manikin.
I think I kinda have to agree with Winners on this one; no she is by NO means fat but this is a woman who makes millions of dollars a year for being extraordinary. The behind shots DID look bad, especially for a supermodel. However, I would LOVE to be as “fat” as her. Can’t say I feel sorry for her; she still got paid at the end of the day.
I have looked at many pictures of her back-side and I have to say, for my own personal delight, that her booty is perfect.
So it is settled; Brazilians fashion critics are a brunch of f*****-up haters.
I can’t see that pic Oversneer.
And for christs sake, don’t they look at the models they use? She’s a Victoria’s Secret model, she’s got curves. Good for her. If she had cellulite, shouldn’t someone have noticed and brought in some stick.
That’s JUST jacked. She looks about a size or two bigger than other models, but what that amounts to is looking better naked i.e. in a bikini than the other girls. Totally appropriate for what she’s wearing. I think she’s never looked better.
WUD: detox, eat a sammich, then call me.
Well, then if she’s “too fat for the runway”, then I still want to be fat. Who the hell likes a flat ass anyway? Sunken in eyes? Sexy. Horselike facial features? *fap fap fap*!
You see, in reality, not all of us are neurotic fashion bigots, and don’t appreciate their ignorant, fear-mongering, and self-hatred inducing fascism.
If that’s “too fat for modeling”, then I’d be completely happy being still too fat. She looks just right.
Who likes a flat, bony ass anyway? FFS, I am a heterosexual female, and know that a majority of men I know like a healthy backside. And to be honest, what is deemed merely appropriate for modeling standards, aren’t appealing to most “real people”. Sunken in eyes? Sexy. Horse-like facial features? *fapfapfap*. Oversized lollipop head? Oh baby.
You see, some of us “real people”, aren’t neurotic high fashion pedants, and don’t really appreciate the fear-mongering and self-hatred that has been instilled by your fascist industry.
“Karolina here is what you do, tell the socialist marxist newspapers in SA to STFU and come back to civilization where you are appreciated.”
Dude, stop, put the pipe away. You’re smoking too much.
And yes, calling her “fat” is just silly, specially because she has a perfect body according to brazilians.
the main discussion is if shes worth it what she was paid, she made her name by been perfect and i guess if she was just starting now she was never going to show her body like that
she is not fat, but yes, she has some chubbys, and all the brazilian models was just looking fabulous and a lot of non brazilian models like heidi klum are looking stunning and shape even after getting kids
its really funny, cos karolina is part of the beauty business and agrees to be sell her image as perfect and make money like that
it look like she really didnt care of showing herself and thats great, but in comparising with any top model you named she was not in her best moment
the question is: should models be models for another women?
well, surely kurkova isnt fat, but lets not be hipocrats:
its not only a brazilian issue, if she appears with this body in the ny fashion week or in the victoria’s secret show she will be criticized the same way
be cause this whole anorixec model look started right here in the usa and was exported worldwide
mary jo, are you actually saying that “perfect = skeletal”?
i only came here to find out which paper said it but hm… well, being a brazilian, i can only say that for us that IS chubby for a model. and i don’t think it’s only for our fashion view, but also for other countries. even if the majority of a population is fat, it doesn’t change the fact most of them want to be thin.
if it were a brazilian model on that pic and ny fashionistas had bashed her over, no english-speaker country would give a damn. but oh, yeah, blame it on brazil, cause we’re a 3rd world country with, let’s face it, women in general waaaaaaaaaay more beautiful than the average american or british.
stop treating it as a brazilian problem. do you think nicole richie and that sister of paris’, whatever her name is, are on a healthy weight? unfortunately, fashion has created this very specific kind of beauty pattern that allegedly has to be followed. then why do condemn a journal that simply said something so many others say all the time?
i think going nuts about something so stupid is being stupid itself. let it go. continue to talk about britney and move on, for christ’s sake. just because someone is not american, they still have the right to talk about celebrities, you know?
You can keep the waaaaaaaaaay more beautiful than average women, and I’ll keep the first world country thank you very much. Cuz with money everything looks better. No Bot Flies here either. So that’s a plus.
by perfect i mean the model standard, not that i agree with that
i think we should ask karolina what she would do to became a top model, if she wasnt famous yet
and pastafarian, theres pretty women everywhere, and in here thats a lot of angry lonely people shooting children in the schools and a lot of fat asses getting even fatter and a lot of patriotcs fools that dont think right dying for nothing
so i guess its a plus to brazil
this is so cliche, sheeeesh
Eek, sorry for the double post.
For such a shallow industry, I figured that the purpose of modeling would be to actually look GOOD. I think that the fashion industry only accepts hideously and unnecessarily emaciated women not for even the sake of aesthetic beauty, but for the sake of going to extremes. Who buys this clothing that the model wears? All kinds of women. It’s completely pointless to display how an outfit looks on a margin of the population.
And I’m sorry, but that last post was so passive aggressive that even I needed to roll my eyes. There are lots of countries full of sh*tty people and have a sh*tty government, that doesn’t mean there aren’t beautiful people living there. Then again, it’s so fashionable to emphasize and exaggerate the problems in America. Everyone living in the US is a fat, greedy war pig.
And for the record, I think this whole obesity epidemic in America is not so much an “epidemic” for any of the right reasons, but because it’s socially unacceptable to be overweight. Every time I begin to believe that people are genuinely concerned about the weight crisis in America, someone criticizes a supermodel for gaining five pounds, and it reminds me that people don’t give a rat’s ass about health but physical appearance.
I always heard the most beautiful women in the world came from Australia, Czechoslovakia, and Kenya, or wherever Iman is from. Oh and California. At least according to Brian Wilson, and David Lee Roth.
if shes considered fat then i, for the first time ever, would love to hook up with a fat chick!
You guys should have a look at this other pic from KK from another angle though… This was taken at the same event.
sorry, here is the link:

Mariana, for the record, Karolina is not American, she’s from Eastern Europe, so stop focusing on American people, because this is an issue that concerns European too.
You say that Brazilian women are generally more beautiful than the rest of the world?
How can you make such an assumption? There are beautiful and ugly people everywhere, and some people’s idea of beauty might be an Italian woman, like Monica Bellucci (by the way named most beautiful woman in the world many more times than any famous brazilian woman). Oh did I mention she’s not American?
I agree the cult of beauty is a big thing in Brazil, but so is it in Croatia! It’s a coastline country too and people spend a lot of time keeping their bodies toned and tanned. I have seen a lot of stunning women over there.
I think Karolina looks amazing. She does looks like she’s put on some weight, but still she’s all the more gorgeous with her extra curves.
I’ve just been looking at some older pictures of Karolina.
Damn, she was a walking skeleton back then! And, to be honest, I don’t think she was attractive at all, looking so unhealthy. You could see almost every bone in her body. Not healthy or sexy.
Now she looks like a woman.
I didn’t care much for her before, but now that I see her with some “meat” on, I have become a fan.
Com’on people…..somebody has done a stupid coment in a newspaper…that doesn’t mean that all the people from Brazil think in the same way!!!!
