Vegans in Canada can now pursue their lifelong dream of eating at KFC, which has come out with a fried “chicken” sandwich made with no animal products.
Getting the sandwich on the menu was a major coup for PETA. The group boasted on its website:
[W]e are thrilled to announce that KFC Canada has agreed to a historic new animal welfare plan that will dramatically improve the lives and deaths of millions of chickens killed for KFC Canada … This is an enormous victory for PETA and our supporters.
They even encouraged people to take advantage of KFC’s buy-one-get-one-free deal. (Not sure how well eating two fried sandwiches supports their claim that a vegan diet reduces cholesterol, but okay.)
But ruh-roh. Ecorazzi.com caught a whiff of something meaty from one of their readers:
“I live in Calgary, AB and I was really excited to try the new vegan KFC burger. I called my nearest location to see if they carried it and then asked them how they cooked it. They said they fry it up in the same fryer as the meat. This was very upsetting and I just wanted to pass this news along as I think it might be something that should be posted since it kind of defeats the whole Vegan thing. I still applaud PETA’s efforts but thought it might be info that should be passed along to others were are also a little misinformed.”
If KFC decides it’s a good business practice to kowtow to PETA’s demands, more power to ‘em. But when faux meat mingles with its poultry lookalike in the deep-fryer, it’s not really fair to call it vegan, is it?

Let’s see:
PETA is now kissing up to KFC because of a single vegan item on the menu that isn’t truly vegan because it’s fried in chicken grease. Never mind the fact that it’s STILL a chicken place that only a few days ago they were criticizing in their fight for chicken rights or whatever BS they are spouting about maltreated poultry. Yeah, PETA could hardly go much lower than this in their fruitless striving for relevance and respect.
I hate PETA. Have I mentioned that before? I hate PETA with all that I am and love to see them make asses of themselves no matter how often they do it, or how easy it is to call them on it. I don’t know that it can get old.
My aunt Stella was bitching about this last night on the phone, ironically. I feel bad for my uncle and cousin. PETA needs to grow the hell up, and relise that just because they have a vegan sandwich, doesn’t mean KFC is going to cater to all their demands. Seriously, what did they expect? It’s KFC, for god’s sake!
But the thing is it does say vegetarian, not vegan and to be honest a lot of so called “vegetarians” do eat chicken and fish or use products that have some sort of fish and/or chicken in them.
Dear Vegans:
Get off your high horses and eat your food. Stop complaining, no one cares. Stop mentioning to everyone that you meet that you are a vegan, it’s pretentious and preachy. You are no better than us Omnivores.
GO MEAT!
I thought KFC didnt sell chicken anyhow - but some sort of bio-engineered chicken product with no head ( just a brain stem ) and 6 legs.
Thats why they changed their name to KFC - since they no longer sold any chicken at the establishment, they were not legally allowed to have chicken in the title.
That’s a myth. And an old one. Last time I went into KFC they had the word chicken all over their menus.
Check it out here.

Common sense says if they could mutate such a chicken, why not do it with all food animals? I mean an animal that doesn’t have a brain doesn’t suffer right?
“[The sandwich] will dramatically improve the lives and deaths of millions of chickens killed for KFC”
How does one improve the *death* of a chicken?
Joe, please tell me you’re being funny. Or at least slightly sarcastic.
You are, aren’t you?
Whatever you do, DO NOT tell me that you actually believe that shite.
Hey, I remember that episode of The X-Files.
No self respecting human would buy anything form KFC, McDonald’s, Burger King, etc., they are horrible in so many ways to their employees, the animals used to make their vile products, and the customers who inject their garbage into their bodies thinking it is some sort of nourishment. Hey people - go the supermarket and make dinner - stop supporting these miserable companies!
Hey, Tim, how about YOU go to the supermarket and let everyone else eat whatever they want to eat! I may not be one for McDonald’s or KFC(I like taco bell or subway), but I HATE when people tell what I should or shouldn’t put into my body. If I want to stuff my mouth with dead animal flesh, then I will damnit, whether you or PETA likes it or not.
Meat is Murder… Tasty, Tasty, Murder
Kim, you took the words right out of my mouth. I personally don’t do fast food unless I find myself on Liverpool Street, drunk, waiting for a train, and desperate for something to keep me on my feet. This happens once a year if that, by the way. Even so, isn’t it about time that people let each other alone about this sort of thing? Eat whatever you want. Your body, your choice.
Whenver I tell someone that I’m a vegetarian they will say “Oh! I know this guy named Joe who is a vegetarian! He only eats chicken, fish, and red meat occasionally.”
People who are close-minded and stuck in their old-fashioned ways think that anyone who eats meat only occasionally can be referred as vegetarians. Idiots.
Anyways, I don’t support PETA because I think that they go too far when it comes to their protests. If I had a young kid, I sure would not want him or her to see half naked people with blood all over them.
I’d be suprised to find out anyone actually believed it was vegetarian to start with!
I like eating plants.
I hope you can find something misconceiving about Peta’s objection to the shooting of pigs for trauma practice on live tissue in Hawaii (recently in the news and they got their “2 million members” to all email complaints to the DOD after a distressed soldier complained to them, bitch). They probably imagine cute little wilbur pigs sunbathing and feeding on fresh papaya. I lived in HI for 2 years, made trips to the big island, and let me tell you, these aren’t just pigs. They are more warthog and wildebeest than pig. They destroy crops, attack people, spread a disease known as Leptospirosis (warning signs on the mountain trails on all islands) among other things. They look like hairy war-painted mean mo-fo’s .. please shoot at will .. no, I don’t want to eat them.
LOL pat! i don’t eat meat but that’s my personal choice. everyone else can eat whatever they want, but i can tell you right now.. i wouldn’t go to KFC even if i wasn’t a vegetarian. people actually believe KFC will sell “vegan” products? no thanks!
oh and just a side note.. used to know someone who worked at mcdonald’s and he didn’t eat meat ( i know, silly but whatever i guess he needed a job ) he also said their fries are fried in beef fat. so all these vegetarians/vegans who think eating mcdonald’s fries are ok, then they’re getting screwed too because it does defeat the purpose lol
honestly i don’t really see the huge deal. i mean, it’s fried in the same fryer but no animals were really killed for YOUR sandwich so who cares?
Not any more. A bunch of vegetarians sued McDonald’s some years ago (not making this up…) and the company had to pay them off & switch frying oils. No more beef tallow. The fries don’t taste as good anymore, if you ask me.

Well, except for all the prairie dogs, rabbits, snakes, and other wildlife that got plowed under to plant the soybeans for that tofu-patty you call a “chik’n” entree. But I know, I know… I’m splitting hares.
really, they’re not fried in beef fat anymore? wow i had no idea.. seriously lol thanks deceiver! i learn something new on this great site all the time haha *pencils in trip to mcdonalds tomorrow after class*
I still like McDonald’s fries. : ) About KFC’s name, I seem to remember some years back they announced they were changing to letters because the word “fried” implied unhealthy. They still fry, they just don’t want you to know it. Pretty damn sneaky, if you ask me.
PETA are hypocritical nutcases. Back when they had their “Jesus was a vegetarian” campaign going on, I did a little research and discovered that the guy overseeing that particular fiasco was a PETA-nutcase named Bruce Friedrich. I also discovered that Bruce Friedrich is a Roman Catholic.
Needless to say, he was rather pissed when I wrote to him and asked how Transubstantiation factored into his vegetarianism.
PETA is stupid. Officially. What are they doing while there is a genocide in Darfur? Protesting chicken deaths. Yes, chickens shouldn’t be abused. No, it doesn’t matter that much. Try focusing on NOT wasting resources, and helping PEOPLE, guys. Maybe with the money you use publicizing Pam and paying Olympic stars to pose naked, you could feed people in Africa.
Personally I think that any step in the right direction is good.
If you think about it, any time a vegertarian or Vegan eats out (fast food) anything deep fried is fried in the same vat or cooked on the same grill.
KFC Canada is also agree to use a CAK system (Controlled Animal Killing) which gasses the chickens before they are even removed from the cages at the slaughter house. This is by far the most huumane method available.
I personally am Vegan, but I dont care what people eat, its a choice you make. All my friends are “meat-eaters” and I wouldnt dare condemn or attack them for their choice, just as i dont want to be condemned or attacked for my own choices.
my only issue is when people try and attack an idea or a step that is postive. Why do that? Yea it’s cooked in the same vat, but change happens in small steps. Why attack or belittle it?
How about be happy with your choices and have some understanding to progress, even if it doesnt affect you directly?
Anyway that’s my 2 cents.

The original article stated ….”(Not sure how well eating two fried sandwiches supports their claim that a vegan diet reduces cholesterol, but okay.)” Apparently the author does not know that
cholesterol is found in the cell membranes of animal tissues. Only trace amounts are found in plants. Frying in plant oil adds no cholesterol though I agree its not very healthy. A vegan diet is extremely low in cholesterol. Also to Vince a few posts above who said ….”Needless to say, he was rather pissed when I wrote to him and asked how Transubstantiation factored into his vegetarianism.” I am a vegetarian and Catholic. There is nothing about the Eucharist that makes it
not vegetarian friendly. You need to look up the meaning of the word “substance”.
