It looks like the Rielle Hunter/John Edwards story is finally starting to get some traction. Yesterday the McClatchy News Service reported on the fact that there’s no father listed on the baby’s birth certificate. Which doesn’t prove anything on its own, of course, but it sure is odd. Especially considering that Andrew Young claims to be the father.
So, it’s a start. Edwards is also dodging the press now, which is the first time I’ve heard of him running away from a camera.
Now that the news is finally getting around to reporting on the story, I wonder if they’ll take a look at New Age Rielle’s two helpers, Bob McGovern (who describes himself, professionally, as “an intuitive”) and astrologer Margaret Sweet? The press usually loves it when politicians get tangled up with astrologers. Maybe we’ll find out that a dowser or a phrenologist is involved too!
Speaking of astrology, when the National Enquirer first reported on the story last October 10, Rielle Hunter immediately put out a statement denying it. Which, in retrospect, was weird for two reasons:
- The Enquirer story didn’t name her, saying only that “the other woman” worked on the Edwards campaign. Why deny a story that hasn’t accused you, specifically, of anything?
- Her denial was published at MyDD.com, whose founder, Jerome Armstrong, is also an astrologer. Probably just another weird coincidence…
I wonder if any of these zodiac-huggers can predict what’s going to happen next?
P.S. You know you’ve really made it when your credibility is questioned by someone named karateexplosions!
P.P.S. I realize this is like talking to a wall, but to the Kos commenter who described this previous post as a “circle jerk of self-sourcing”: I sourced Newsweek, HuffPo, MSNBC, Gawker, Wikipedia, CBS, the BBC, CJR, Slate, and the Boston Globe, in addition to the Enquirer (boo!), Fox (double-boo!), and our own posts on it (triple-boo!), in order to figure out where the story stood at that point. I put in links to all of it, which you’d know if you had clicked them. So I’d like to think it was a fairly well-sourced circle jerk. But other than that, excellent point.
P.P.P.S. A third reason why Hunter’s denial back in October was weird: She’s not denying anything now. Well, just in case that MyDD page disappears for whatever reason, here’s the text of her denial:
The innuendoes and lies that have appeared on the internet and in the National Enquirer concerning John Edwards are not true, completely unfounded and ridiculous.
My video production company was hired by the Edwards camp on a 6 month contract, which we completed December 31, 2006.
When working for the Edwards camp, my conduct as well as the conduct of my entire team was completely professional.
This concocted story is just dirty politics and I want no part of it.
MyDD founder and astrologer Jerome Armstrong then added a note: “Just a total bulls*** story.” Although in retrospect, it’s unclear whether he meant the Enquirer story or her denial.
Speaking of Rielle’s “team,” has anybody tried contacting Mimi Hockman about this yet? She was on Being Is Free’s “board of directors” and was Hunter’s partner in the production company Midline Groove, whose Edwards campaign videos kicked off this whole thing. (Back when Hunter had to work for a living, of course.) Maybe Hockman might care to comment? Again, I’m not trying to tell the news how to do their jobs. Just trying to help out.

God I love those guys over at DailyKos. 2008 is half over, there’s a presidential election right around the corner, and the man they hate more than anyone in the universe will be out of office in a few short months, and their still talking about “pre-war intelligence”.
I clicked on the link to the McClatchy newsite. Next to the article is political cartoon about Edwards and The National Enquirer. The cartoon fully shows McCain’s hypocrisy as well as Edwards and the Media.
LOVED THE CARTOON.
Young is married, no? I want to know how much Edwards is paying his wife to put up with this .
@Pastafarian: At least the kos kids will be still able to continue not getting their candidates elected. So they have that going for them, which is nice.
Y’know Simon, the self sourced comment is ridiculous because if you’re the only one telling the story what other outlet are you going to source? Not that you did but the comment is ridiculous.
I was reading an interview that Salon conducted with Elizabeth Edwards dated 7/17/07 and found some of Elizabeth’s comments interesting, especially in regards to the question of if and when she confronted her husband on the Rielle issue. During the interview, the interviewer asks Elizabeth the following question:
“Speaking of Senator Clinton, your husband is getting rapped for maybe collaborating with her to close some of the debates to the full group of Democratic candidates … ”
and Elizabeth replies:
“Well, John answered that, and I posted on MyDD [July 13]. ” (Note: here is the link the article dated 7/13/07 which Elizabeth took issue with on the MyDD website and her response:
http://www.mydd.com/story/2007/7/13/215314/314 )
the interviewer then comments:
“You blogged on it on MyDD? That’s funny. You’re famous for that, actually — people always said you were a Daily Kos diarist under another name. ”
and Elizabeth replies:
“I wasn’t. But I have blogged using other screen names before. Before the Whole Foods guy got in trouble [the Wall Street Journal revealed last week that CEO John Mackey used pseudonyms to deride competitors online] I decided that that wasn’t such a good idea.”
Many articles about Elizabeth have emphasized that she is constantly monitoring any Internet news related to her husband, and clearly she was aware of any negative buzz he was receiving, even on sites such as MyDD, so I can’t imagine that she didn’t have some questions for John once Rielle posted her statements on MyDD later on in 2007.
Thanks for that link, Kris. I didn’t realize she commented there, let alone had her own blog there.
