If you’re curious about Bob McGovern, the Santa Barbara professional “intuitive” who’s in the middle of the John Edwards/Rielle Hunter scandal, please humor me and take this two-step test:
- Read this. Pay particular attention to the date on it.
- Read this. Try to find a link, or any reference whatsoever, to step 1.
Weird, huh? Deceiver was the only place talking about this stuff for at least a week and a half, but all of a sudden everybody else has been doing original research on the Margaret Sweet connection the whole time? Or maybe it doesn’t count as research when we do it, since we’re just a silly gossip blog with a hot-pink logo. Maybe that’s it. (Please see Update 3 below for a more thorough explanation of this.)
- Dear Serge F. Kovaleski, Patrick Healy, Toby Lyles, and everybody else at the New York Times:
You know the blogs and tabloids beat you to this story. Everybody knows. It wasn’t exactly difficult, considering you guys waited almost three weeks for John Edwards to give you permission. You’re not going to salvage your reputation by pretending otherwise.
Also, somebody should talk to your headline writer. “Behind a Meeting That Exposed Edwards’s Affair”? Why not just type out the equivalent number of Z’s?

Update: Looks like ABC News doesn’t think we’re worth citing either. Watch this video, and pay close attention about 43 seconds in. Where did they get the URL for the cached copy (now blocked) of Being Is Free? According to Google Blog Search, Deceiver was the first place to note the existence of that URL (here), and only a few other places have linked to it, at our prompting. If I seem nitpicky about this, it’s because for weeks I’ve been hammering on the disappearance of all sorts of online information about the principals in this story. And nobody’s been paying attention. Or so I thought, until these guys started acting like they pulled this stuff out of thin air. Don’t they talk about attribution in journalism school? (Hat tip, once again: Fortunate Son)
Update 2: And just so it doesn’t look like I’m doing the same thing: I got an anonymous tip about the Egyptian Wayback Machine cache of beingisfree.org, which in turn probably derived from this Twitter by the Stranahans. And the Margaret Sweet stuff came from a tipster too. So I wasn’t the first person in the history of the world to find out about it. But Deceiver was the only place where the NYT and ABC could have found that specific information about the deletions, what was there before the deletions, and what it all means in the context of this whole disaster, because Deceiver was the first to cover it. (To my knowledge, Jossip and DBKP are the only other places that have talked about it in any detail, and they gave us proper attribution and a link for showing it to them. Because they realize why that’s important.) As far as I can determine, anyway. If somebody out there has better information, please let me know.
Update 3: Another thing I don’t think I made clear above is that there was a very brief window of time when this information was available. The beingisfree.org cache was discovered on 7/26, I posted about it on 7/30 and 7/31, and it was blocked on 8/2. If a few other people and I hadn’t saved it to our hard drives, it would be completely gone now. Likewise, the “Helpful Dudes” page on MargaretSweet.com was deleted on 7/24, I got the tip about the Google cache with the relevant info on 7/31 and posted about it that day, and the next day the cache was updated and that info was gone. So I’m very confident in saying that if this stuff hadn’t been posted to Deceiver, we wouldn’t be seeing it on ABC and in the NYT now. They need to explain themselves. Not that I think they will, because they’re too arrogant to admit how much they’ve embarrassed themselves throughout this whole story, but they need to.
In other news that apparently isn’t news until some jerk at the New York Times pretends he found it himself:
- Rielle is pronounced “Riley.” Why wouldn’t it be? (Update: Apparently her friend Pige– Wait, this can’t be right. Pigeon O’Brien? Well, that’s what it says here. Rielle’s friend Pigeon O’Brien pronounces it “Ree-ELLE.” Who knows. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if it was pronounced “Riddleydoo Spacepod Rainbow.”)
- Patterico.com talks to Fred Baron, the kind-hearted soul who’s been paying out of pocket for Rielle and the Young family’s living expenses. And quite fancy living at that! Which of course has nothing to do with John Edwards. (Update: Lee Stranahan, who apparently requires no more than 45 seconds of sleep per night, also talked to Baron.)
- DBKP continues to haunt Edwards’ nightmares. (Update: And they’re getting poached by the “real” news as well. Not acceptable.)
- Amy Alkon discovers that when the LA Times finally “broke” the story, they assigned it to an intern.
- Speaking of the biggest newspaper in the city where this incident happened, the better part of a month ago: Author Sarah Miller contributes to the LAT’s sudden burst of interest in this story with a fairly humorous account of her brief acquaintance with Rielle Hunter. A name that, if all you ever read was the LA Times, would’ve meant nothing to you until late Friday afternoon. And yet they’re already at the “wacky reminiscences” stage.

- Psychology Today continues to examine Edwards’ narcissism on the subject of Edwards’ narcissism:
Here’s the BIG HOLE in Mr. Edwards’ mea culpa: He strongly suggests that since he “understands” what he did, he is positioned to live “happily ever after” as a sadder-but-wiser-and-chastened man. Trust me; it won’t happen. Why? Because like most of what has been oozing out of his mouth since being caught virtually in flagrante delicto at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, his “apology” was disingenuous.

Here’s some free advice, and no attribution necessary:
Rielle Hunter’s background screams Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). One of the hallmark traits of BPD is “splitting,” which means that BPD’s view others as idealized, extreme poles of either all good or all bad. Hunter obviously has a classic idealized view of Edwards, having said that she saw in him a Ghandi, MLK Jr. or other great figure.
Use Hunter’s disability to your advantage. Encourage her to split from seeing Edwards from 100% great to 100% shit (DSM-IV criteria #2 — “devaluation“) — when this happens, she will dish on everything, especially given the BPD propensity for rage (”affective instability”), fear of abondonment, and emotional need to “prove” their extreme feelings of contempt for others. Who knows, such an approach may end up saving toy a lot of money too, unless her attorney is able to exert an extraordinary level of control.

I think reporters may want to interview (or at least fire off a quick email or phone call) the following two people from Edwards’ campaign:
#1 Kim Rubey (Kimberly A. Rubey) - Edwards’ Press Secretary (at least she was at the time that the Webisodes were being created. Kim seems to have had some insider knowledge into the goings-on of the whole Rielle and Edwards dynamic. When Jonathan talked to her in July of 2006, Rielle’s six-month contract had just begun, and Kim Rubey certainly seemed skeptical of the Webisodes concept and of Rielle’s involvement with the campaign.

“Does she work for the campaign?” I asked Edwards’s press secretary, Kim Rubey. “Oh, she’s working on a documentary project,” said Rubey. “We’re not sure if it’s going to work out”

My new (since BEFORE the “scandal” caught on!!!) favorite website. I was wondering about the timeline… it would appear that Rielle got herself impregnated May 14th, 2007 give or take two weeks.
How difficult would it be to trace a meet between the two during that timeframe? Wasn’t Edward’s campaign in full swing then? (Which is– another reason– why I think the MSM has no interest in really getting into all this.)
I have to admit another scenario running through my mind. She IS an old woman, fertility-wise. Just kinda strains me to believe the pregnancy just happened. Just considering other scenarios… especially since he was SO adamant that the child couldn’t be his. In other words, suppose the timeline proves he couldn’t have impregnated her during May 2007? Would you rule him out then as the father? I wouldn’t!!!
Which leads me to a prediction. The Enquirer has already done surreptitious DNA tests on the child & on Edwards… & will release results soon!!!

Not sure if anyone here has mentioned the fact that she as previously married to attorney Alexander ‘Kip’ Hunter, the son of Jon Benet Ramsey prosecutor Alexander Hunter.
And of course, Lisa Jo Druck’s (Rielle Hunter) father was also an attorney, James Druck.

NY Post is reporting that Melissa Druck (RH’s sister) told them that if only JE would come forward and tell the whole truth, “all this” would go away. When they asked if JE was her niece’s father, she sighed “I’ve said too much already.”
And where is Andrew Young and his family in all this? Surely if this was his baby, he should at least stand up and claim/defend his child. It’s been weeks since the NE broke the Hilton story, and all we hear are crickets from AY.
Two points that are hardly ever covered:
1. How likely is it that an ex-employee who finds herself in trouble could or would ever call her former employer and expect him to take a ride with her friend to a hotel to comfort her & visit her baby for 5 hours? That just doesn’t happen. Not to mention the fact the employer is practically untouchable and unapproachable since he is high profile.
2. What on earth is J Edwards doing…flying all over the country meeting with mayors, giving speeches, etc. while his wife is dying? I don’t care if they do have enough money for round the clock care. These last few months matter and speeches could be planned for later. I’ve been there (cancer) and outside interests, including a long-term affair, was last on my mind.
This whole thing just doesn’t add up.

It is obvious that Edwards is STILL lying about aspects of this affair. He needs to come out with the WHOLE truth once and for all, instead of digging himself into a deeper hole.
