Stella McCartney — designer, PETA darling, and daughter of Paul — is seriously pissed that British fur-maker Hockley used one of her line’s bras in a print advertisement for a $13,000 mink coat with a leather belt.
‘Stella went absolutely ballistic when she saw it,’ a source at Ms McCartney’s store in Mayfair told The Mail on Sunday. ‘I have never seen her so angry. She hit the roof and said that she planned to sue.
‘She allows her accessories to be lent to shoots all the time, but she would never ever allow anything of hers to go to a fashion house that deals exclusively with fur.
‘If Stella knew it was going to be used by Hockley there is no way she would have lent it. It was loaned to a stylist in good faith, but when Stella saw the picture she was furious. She said: “It goes against everything I stand for.”’
But oh, the irony: The bra in question is made from a silk blend. How do you make silk? Here’s a video instruction manual, which explains how silkworms are boiled alive in the process. “This is bad news for the silkworms inside the cocoons” — indeed, which also makes it not terribly vegan.
And if we wanted to get nitpicky, we would point out that Stella McCartney made a suede purse a few seasons back, using “ecological leather.” Which, guess what, is still leather. From environmental-activist cows, I suppose.

“From environmental-activist cows, I suppose.”
You can make accessories from Jenna Jameson?
Is jenna Big enough any more to be considered a Cow?? Most of her teats were removed so that reference is not eough any longer.
“‘She allows her accessories to be lent to shoots all the time, but she would never ever allow anything of hers to go to a fashion house that deals exclusively with fur.’”
Uh, maybe the bra was purchased instead of lent.
ITA with silk commentary.
I have found that most PETA-philes make no connection between their yammering and their actions.
Silkworms are icky and ugly so they don’t count.
Mmmm… Since we are on the subject of silk, what about asking the other P.E.T.A. spoke persons if they got silk items in their wardrobes? That could be fun.
So are lab rats, but some of these animal rights activists torch buildings with children inside in order to “defend” the little rodents.
“Silkworms are icky and ugly so they don’t count.”
Toubrouk – got it in one.
Wow…I didn’t realize being PETA meant that a product your name is associated with can not touch an animal product. Does this mean PETA types can’t sit in cars with leather interiors, or eat lunch next to a diabetic who uses insulin, or eat a KFC sammich that was cooked in a pro-meat place?
Oops, there I go thinking again…
Hey folks — I’m sure you’ve heard tell of our PETA Kills Animals campaign (Shameless plug: http://www.PetaKillsAnimals.com), but I just thought I’d come by and congratulate you on throwing some of PETA’s garbage back in its tofu-fed face.
Fun, isn’t it?

Once again the vegans are hypocrites for their brutal treatment of bugs!
Why doesn’t PETA invest considerable time and money fighting the senseless slaughter of bugs? There are 900,000 known insect species (three times more than the rest of the animal kingdom combined). That’s 80 percent of the world’s species, and surely some of them are capable of feeling pain as they rocket into our windshields.
Damn those cruel youngsters with their magnifying glasses and curiosity!
stella m. actually made quite a few cashmere blend sweaters for her adidas line…i think it was last season…hyppocrite…just like the rest of ‘em petaphiles
People like Stella count on the ignorance and apathy of the public to get away with doing very hypocritical things. She only brings attention to it for a sales boost, a little cheap advertising, not realizing that there are people that are not ignorant or apathetic.
I thought the point of ecological leather is that it isn’t leather, but after reading this and having done some research on the internets apparently it is indeed, real. Well you learn something new everyday. Now, back to eating my ham sandwich…
okay come on you are so lame. this is worse than perez hilton, at least that funny! You’re like ripping these people down because they’re doing nice things, but they’re not nuns, get over yourself, im pretty sure that you’re kind of a hypocrite yourself, everyone is. So this site pretty much just makes you look like an . get over yourself.
and go ahead say something about how im a caus i put anonymous, ya damn right I put anonymous. you people dont need to know who i am, i’ll even admit its a move. whatevs .
OK, I’m an animal rights activist but not a PETA member, I eat meat, I wear leather, but here’s were I differ from most animal rights activist the most: The way I see it, if you kill the animal then make use of the whole thing!
I don’t like furs because the animal is killed just for the fur and the rest of the body is wasted, now with leather, the skin is used, the meat is used, the bone is sometimes used, basically it’s not going to waste, if you kill an animal then use all of it you can, don’t waste it.
I didn’t know silk was made that way, I never liked silk in the first place (thus I don’t own any) but man, sucks to be one of the silk worms!
What gives you the idea that the rest of a mink’s body (or a fox’s, or a rabbit’s) is “wasted”? Just curious. I’m just guessing too, but it seems to me that farmers would rather see the animals rendered into dog food, or fish feed, or something else (and get paid for the protein), rather than having to pay someone else to dispose of it.
And isn’t the fat from minks boiled down into what the cosmetics industry calls “mink oil”? It’s supposed to be a heck of a skin emollient.
This website is quite amusing. However, stickler for honesty that I am, I did want to point out there are ways of making silk without killing the silkworm, just so people know. I am not saying the bra in question was made this way, odds are it likely wasn’t, but I did want to point out that some silkmakers allow the silkworm to hatch from it’s cocoon, then salvage the remains of the cocoon for silkmaking. This cuts the production of silk down significantly as the single strand now only lasts to the end which the moth emerged from rather than being the entire cocoon length, but it can be done without harming the silkworm.
