The John Edwards Memory Hole Keeps Filling Up

Remember Cheri Young’s page on Oprah.com? The one chronicling Cheri’s participation in Oprah’s Pay It Forward Challenge? I told you about it on Aug. 6. Here’s what it looked like:

Guess what? It’s gone. That URL now sends you to a “server error” page. But it was taken down recently enough that there’s still a Google cache and a Yahoo cache of that URL.

How about a handy list of all the Edwards-related stuff that’s been taken down from the Web so far?

  1. Rielle’s videos for the Edwards campaign
  2. Rielle’s entire site
  3. The page with Bob McGovern’s resume and contact info
  4. The Midline Groove site (such as it was)
  5. Cheri Young’s page on Oprah.com

Let me know if I’m forgetting anything. A suspicious sort of person might start to see a pattern.

(Hat tip: Sharp-eyed Deceiver reader Mark Poling)

Update: This other Oprah.com URL, which shows the same page, is still working. False alarm on my part? Or oversight on theirs? Well, if it turns out I’ve jumped the gun, you won’t see me deleting the evidence of my mistake.

Today’s National Enquirer states the Learjet that flew Rielle Hunter departed from Oxnard airport and left at 2 am local time on August 6, 2006.

Wonder where their flight plan said they were going?

It’s just Oprah messing with ya … I understand her Java skills are superb.

Actually, it looks like they change content management systems and Google hasn’t de-listed the old site …

… nor has Oprah’s IT team used .htaccess to create a permanent re-direct of old content urls to new.

John Edwards talked about Dad’s mill,
While sleeping with a chick off the pill,
He lied and fibbed to the MS press,
And, awoke early to preen and dress.

His wife, Elizabeth, knew the lie in 2006,
But supported John in Iowa while sick,
They stole Hillary’s honest votes daily,
And laughed on cue, and hiding Rielle.

Now John’s betrayal is common news,
And Fred Baron has money to lose,
Rielle, now nursing, has jetted away,
Even ABC and CNN have joined the fray!

John’s affair has hurt his poor kids,
More than Clinton’s cigars ever did,
A sordid tale that some call a crock,
The only winner, a loser named Barack!

An investigative TV reporter in Detroit was able to get flight records for the embattled mayor and a host of reporters tracked the dreaded CIA flights, don’t tell me that this is like the last thing on the MSM’s list? If it is, I think it answers what they are doing quite evidently.

There’s 100 more hours of Rielle Hunter video not used in the Webisodes and Edwards paid $14,000 for it in April 2007.

…the $14,000 payment to Hunter is significant because its source was Edwards’ OneAmerica political action committee, whose expenditures are governed by U.S. election laws. Willfully converting money from a political action committee for personal use would have been a federal criminal violation.

    Also…

Both John Edwards said last week he did not plan to speak again about the affair, and a former campaign official who has been acting as a spokeswoman reiterated this week he will not discuss the subject. It’s not clear where Hunter is currently living, and a women who answered at her attorney’s office this week refused to take a message

Oh, and if you are wondering about a Rielle location that private jet out of Oxnard took her to Did Edwards take a page out of John Kerry’s playbook and shuttle her to Africa? Alexandra Polier went there recall. Edwards and Rielle went there together recall too.

  8. 8 Sunflower Aug 15th, 2008 at 4:09 am

oh my, that makes me think. John Kerry really hasn’t weighed in on his VP running mate, has he?

Wouldn’t it be a knee slapper if there was this massive quid pro quo(sp) on the inside with all these Democrat nominees and big wigs and the Edwards are just emulating their “biggers” actions?

Embarrassed, up against the wall, Edwards holds the key? Like he learned what to do from them (deny, shuttle mistress off to foreign country till the friendly press is happy, with the excuse they want and need and off you ass?), like he knows the drill?

Recall that Wesley Clark, Clinton supporter, was the source for Kerry’s affair and the press doesn’t like the Clintons’ so they walked away from that one, they wanted Kerry over Booosh. Food for thought.

  9. 9 Sunflower Aug 15th, 2008 at 4:31 am

    OMG

I had no idea how my hunch was so right…isn’t it odd that Alexandra Polier’s – much more sophisticated and self aware for her future career – story tracks with Edwards – Young – Rielle’s story?

    Here is Alexandra’s story:

“Hello, I’m Alexandra Polier. I’m one of your constituents.” I’d grown up outside Boston, and he looked pleased to hear a familiar accent. “What are you doing here?” he asked cheerily, and ordered me a drink. We moved swiftly through American foreign policy to his political ambitions. “I think you’re going to be the next president of the United States,” I said with a confidence that probably seemed very forward. “Oh, you do, do you?” he replied, looking slightly amused. He asked if I had any desire to work on a political campaign, so I ran through my résumé. He seemed impressed, and after sharing Davos gossip for fifteen minutes, he shook my hand and said, “Get in touch with my office. Maybe there’s something you can do for the campaign.”

I called the senator’s office the week I got back and was invited to a fund-raiser in New York later that month. His assistant assured me that the $2,000 ticket would be comped. When Kerry eventually arrived, everything seemed glamorous. At first I was afraid that he wouldn’t recognize me. “Alexandra, so glad you could make it,” he said when he reached me. Beckoning to a handsome aide who’d walked in with him, he introduced me to his finance director, Peter Maroney. We were the youngest people in the room by fifteen years, and after discovering the coincidence of growing up in the same hometown, we hit it off. I found him charming, smart, and charismatic—a cuter version of his boss.

As the last guests were heading out, Kerry came back and suggested we all go to dinner at Churrascaria Plataforma, a Brazilian restaurant nearby. I was surprised to be invited, and flattered when I was seated between Peter and the senator. I hoped it was my wit and enthusiasm, not my blonde hair and long legs, that got me a seat at the table. I felt like a serious player. Four mojitos later, the conversation was animated. Plans for a Kerry presidency were punctuated by platters of skirt steak and roasted salmon. The senator was flirtatious and funny. I felt I held my own with the other dinner guests, and Kerry announced to them that he hoped I would be coming onboard the campaign soon. And after dinner, as Peter put me into a cab, I knew I would be hearing from the senator’s finance director again.

A phone friendship with Peter followed, and we started dating that spring. I contemplated moving to Washington and spoke a few times on the phone with Kerry, who indulged me by offering advice about my career. The presidential race was still three years away, and by then I’d been accepted at Columbia. Peter was a little nervous about dating a fledgling reporter, but our relationship was fun. As Kerry’s chief fund-raiser, he would spend his weeks flying around the country raising millions of dollars, and I would join him for long weekends in D.C. or on his jaunts up to Boston. Peter was ferociously private, and kept his personal and professional lives separate, so much so that I would often stay with him in the same hotel as Kerry and never see the senator. On the rare occasions I did, at the World Economic Forum in New York the next year where we grabbed a coffee, or at a political event with Peter in D.C., we discussed my career or his campaign. And when I ran into Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, at a function in Worcester, she was very sweet and asked me about Peter.

… As Kerry’s campaign switched into high gear, Peter had little time or energy left for me. Eventually the relationship fizzled out, but we remained friends, talking often.

When I left the States last fall, we stayed in touch via e-mail…

Worked for Kerry, Edwards thought. But there is a baby is the problem.

    And odd:

Peter recommended I speak with Kerry’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Cutter. She peppered me with questions. When had I first met the senator? “Davos.” Were there any pictures of us together? “No,” I said. “Think back, Alex, think hard . . . Have you ever been alone with the senator?”

she denied an affair so why were they so worried? The MSM were cool with Edwards and Rielle’s denials like from day one. Why the black room Gitmo interrogation?

10 days to the Democratic national convention. And this isn’t going to ‘go away’ in 10 days.

If I were Howard Dean, I’d make an office call on Silky Pony, and inform him to come completely clean with this whole mess immediately because, not only will he NEVER be a Democratic party candidate for ANYTHING again, he’s possibly facing disbarment and felony charges. And if he doesn’t, NO ONE in the Democratic party is going to defend his sorry ass.

A very disconcerting comment in the column…

“She (Rielle) believes they’ll be together in future because Elizabeth’s health concerns make it just a matter of time. Whatever he’s said, in her mind the clock is running. We know this.

    ugh.

10 days to the Democratic national convention. And this isn’t going to ‘go away’ in 10 days.

One cup of cream of Bill Clinton
Two tablespoons of extra-spicy Howard Dean
    One pound of Obama
    Four ounces of shredded Hillary
Withhold one galllon of John Edwards scandal (nothing to see here)
Sprinkle liberally *heh* with angry moonbats
After mixing gingerly, pour into a Pepsi Center and watch!

    Best! Convention! Ever!

We all know from a few days ago via reporting on photos taken by Richard Scoblethat Edwards took Rielle on his Presidential Announcement tour:
    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/08/11/edwards_took_mistress_on_2006.html
    although Scoble claims:
“I never saw them behave inappropriately in front of me,” he added. Scoble was traveling with the campaign as part of a blogger contingent invited to ensure the event received online attention.”

It is interesting to note, however, that on the Flickr page of another member of that same blogger contingent:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/blogumentary/2744294493/
“I was with the Edwards campaign, similarly filming behind-the-scenes video, when he launched his campaign in New Orleans in December 2006. After NOLA we went to Iowa, where Edwards drew a huge crowd. There was a celebratory mood in the air as we got back on the Edwards jet to fly to New Hampshire.

On that flight, there was a lot of booze and elation, excitement and hope. Edwards was in the back of the plane with Rielle, and a couple of other campaign staffers. I remember Edwards turning on his iPod and grooving his head around. I went back to use the bathroom and when I came out, decided to chat with Rielle. She was very outgoing, maybe even flirtatious, but really nice. I asked how she got the gig filming webisodes, and she said she met him in a bar and they clicked, and she proposed some online documentary showing his authenticity. She told me about some Hollywood sitcom writing and other weird projects she’d been involved with – nothing I’d ever heard of.

Unfortunately, I’ve always held a small seed of suspicion that the affair rumors could be true from my short experience with the campaign. But I’m nevertheless very saddened to hear it’s true, especially sad for Elizabeth Edwards who is an even more inspiring figure than John Edwards.”

So, according to that blogger, who goes by the Flickr account name of “Chuckumentary”, Rielle was being flirty, their was lots of booze and a party atmosphere, and Rielle and John were going from New Orleans, to Iowa, to New Hampshire etc etc and it is only when they reach the date of December 30th, 2006 that they are finally back where Elizabeth is in Chapel Hill. I just can’t believe that John allowed Rielle to still be present when Elizabeth is there! See blogger “Mondoreb” over at DBKP:

I don’t understand how Rielle was traveling all over the place with John at the end of December 2006, when in Jonathan Darman’s Newsweek article, Jonathan mentions that when he talks to Rielle in the fall of 2006 – November, I think:
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/151783/page/2
“When I next saw Rielle weeks later, she told me that she’d been fired by the Edwards campaign. She seemed perfectly cheerful about it, but she proceeded to tell me a tale of woe—how the campaign hadn’t understood her, how they’d ruined the Webisodes, how they’d impeded her vision and how Edwards himself had failed to defend her. The chief villain in this saga was Elizabeth Edwards. “Someday,” Rielle said, “the truth about her is going to come out.”

I guess just like Pidgeon O’Brien said, they kept breaking up and getting back together. However, if Rielle was “fired” in November of 2006 and alluding to the fact that Elizabeth had something to do with that, then I’m surprised John would bring Rielle to that Chapel Hill event with Elizabeth on December 30th 2006. How much did Elizabeth know in November of 2006?

  21. 21 kris Aug 15th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Let’s see…John was obviously still seeing Rielle in December of 2006. Pigoeon O’Brien says that:
    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/08/13/2008-08-13_elizabeth_edwards_stayed_with_cheating_h.html
“They broke up a bunch of times, especially when Elizabeth was rediagnosed [with cancer],” a friend of Hunter’s, Texas publicist Pigeon O’Brien, told People. “But they got back together.”

and this is confirmed by Jonathan Darman:
“I stayed in touch with Rielle for months. At lunch at the Soho House in late spring of ‘07, Rielle told me that she and novelist Jay McInerney were working on a “genius” idea for a television show about women who help men get out of failing marriages by having affairs with them. She said they wanted to pitch this idea to Darren Star, creator of “Melrose Place” and “Sex and the City.” At lunch early that summer, I asked Rielle if she was dating anyone. She answered simply, “I’m in love.” I asked, “Who with?” “I can’t tell you,” she said, “but maybe someday we’ll all be friends.”

So it seems like all of these “breakups” between John and Rielle would only last for a very short period of time – in fact, it seems like things never really stopped between them since their first meeting in the winter of 2006 (or December of 2005, by some accounts).

  22. 22 Fortunate Son Aug 15th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

I too have wondered why Darman’s account is not reconcilable with the known timeline.

His first article is sourced in late 2006.

We agreed to meet at Aqua Grill in SoHo on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving

That would be Tuessday November 21, 2006, but the date Rielle reveals she has been fired is couched in generic terms.

When I next saw Rielle weeks later, she told me that she’d been fired by the Edwards campaign

Knowing the strict legal terminology that has been employed through this denial, “weeks later” could mean April 2007, when she received her final payment for the 100 unpublished hours of video.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in Darman’s timeline, he seemed to be holding out a line baited with friendship, hoping Rielle would bite and call him again.

  23. 23 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Aug 15th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Frequent break-ups & reunions sounds like it could be consistent with bipolar disorder. When she’s ‘up’ she’s in love and everything is great. But when she’s ‘down’ she realizes she’s just ‘the other woman’, sleeping with other women’s husbands.

That tv show she conjured up probably isn’t much of a stretch from her real life.

  24. 24 PJ Aug 15th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
