‘I Kissed A Girl’ Singer Used to Be Christian Rocker

Katy Perry, whose annoying single “I Kissed A Girl” has been clogging up my radio since June, apparently used to be named Katy Hudson.

Whoop-de, everyone in showbiz changes their name, right?

Well as Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled Christian pop/rock album on MySpace in 2001. Kind of a different image she’s going for now.

BeliefNet reports that her parents were both preachers and she landed a contract in 2001 to produce a Christian album. This despite telling Blender magazine that she wasn’t “your typical Christian. I’ve done a lot of bad things. Use your imagination.”

I no longer want to use my imagination, as it was plastered everywhere a few weeks ago that the girl she most wants to kiss is Miley Cyrus. Which makes sense as they’re kindred spirits, except it’s gross and illegal because Perry is 23 and Miley Cyrus is, despite her acting to the contrary, underage.

Maybe they’ll have a three-way with Jessica Simpson and the circle will be complete.

I am willing to give her a pass on this. I’m the son of a preacher and the things that we do publicly when we’re still under our parents’ influence is often totally different than what we end up doing when we no longer have to follow their rules. You know what they say about PKs. (And she probably changed her name because Kate Hudson already had dibs)

OH and the Christian album was 7 years ago, she was 16. I’m sure that when she’s 30 she will look back on some of the things she’s doing and saying now and cringe.

No offense, but this is an extremely old story. If I knew about it must be old. I’m always the last one to know anything.

Thanks goodness I’m not the only one annoyed by Perry.

I’m with ya on the three way with her, Jessica, and Miley. Except take out Miley, and make it me. Oh and you can remove Katy too if you want. If Jess really wants to be pregnant I’m willing to try.

I’m rich, handsome, cultured, And I can hold my liquor. Alright it’s a lie. I’m not rich.

I don’t know what happened but that was me not HHLL. Just in case Jessica wanted to know.

  8. 8 Rocko Aug 15th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Katy Perry wants to kiss a girl and she’s famous, she’s done better than those Girls Gone Wild girls who actually do kiss girls and aren’t getting interviewed by Blender. I really don’t like her by the way and the song is terrible.

This reminds me of angst queen Alanis Morrissette (sp?) who also a released a pop record before she was Miss “You Oughta Know”. If we want to talk about groups that change their image to be more popular, I can write about that.

I apologize for the apparent oldness of this story. I don’t have BeliefNet bookmarked so I just heard of it today when WWTTD spread the word.

  13. 13 Nati Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Ugh it’s just so annoying how this “bi-curiosity” has become this “hot trend”. Seems like every other girl out there is either trying it or thinks about trying it . And what really gets me is that a lot of these girls are not really gay or bisexual, they are not doing it because they are genuinely attracted to other girls but because it has become this trend, like skinny jeans or tunic tops, which is pretty offensive to those of us who are and have always been attracted to people of the same sex regardless of what’s in fashion these days. And it looks like some people are doing it just for the experience of it or to be able to brag about it later the way they would brag about their new bag or some other fashionable accesory. Bicuriosity has become fashionable. No wonder every talentless wannabe is trying to exploit this “new trend” too.

  14. 14 Christina X Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:42 am

Thank god someone on Deceiver pointed this out.

I don’t listen to that kind of music, but I’ve known for a while now that Katy Perry was once a Christian rocker, and it always irritated me that no-one else took notice of her current behavior.

Mind you, I accept homosexuals and bisexuals. What I find positively revolting about her song lyrics is that she’s gloating that she basically cheated on her boyfriend as “an experiment”.

I’m sure that homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals all have come to terms with their sexuality at birth, and I think Katy Perry is part of the reason why bisexuals and homosexuals are mocked in our society, because sadly it’s the “in” thing to pretend to be right now and that girls pretend to be gay with each other to garner attention from men.

    That’s unfair.

I dislike Katy Perry because she basically turned her back on her original fanbase when it became convenient for her to be overtly sexual and promoting sexuality.

Katy Perry is the girl who ditches her friends to hang out with the popular table.

  15. 15 Christina X Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:42 am

    Sexuality=promiscuity.

  16. 16 Nati Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:55 am

“because sadly it’s the “in” thing to pretend to be right now”

It really is, isn’t it? It has become this fashion trend with all those poser-bisexuals (especially, girls) lying about their sexuality to be “hip” or, like u’ve pointed out correctly, to garner attention from men and everybody else.

  17. 17 Rocko Aug 16th, 2008 at 1:09 am

    Being “bi” is a trend?

  18. 18 Nati Aug 16th, 2008 at 1:40 am

    “Being “bi” is a trend?”

Of course not. Being bisexual is not a trend, but it looks like these days some people think it is.

  19. 19 Christina X Aug 16th, 2008 at 2:59 am

Of course, bisexuality isn’t a trend. It’s been in nature since the beginning of time and always will be, but yes, you can spot the phoneys from a mile away, and it’s a shame because they’re exploiting and degrading the homosexual/bisexual community.

It’s a shame that people really are actually naive enough to believe that if you’re bisexual that you’re like this Katy Perry twit or like Tila Tequila. I don’t know many, but most bisexuals I know are quite reserved about it.

And really, there’s no shame in whatever sexuality you are, but that’s not my point.

  20. 20 Nati Aug 16th, 2008 at 3:37 am

I agree. It’s like nobody even takes it seriously anymore. To me it’s a big deal - I’ve pretty much always known I was bisexual, and I was in a relationship with someone because I was attracted to them and because I developped feelings for them. Not because it was “trendy” like some people think it is. It’s such a personal thing and coming out was always such a big deal. It was (and still is) one of the most courageous things one could do. Couple years ago no one would even think about bragging about it - not because they were ashamed of it but because it’s so personal. And these days it’s like “Hi, my name is X. I’m bi” Which would be OK, if only they were not lying about it. But u can tell right away that they are - most of them are not really bi, it’s just some sort of a bravado, a way to attract attention. It’s like with those rich suburban kids who try to dress and talk like their fav rap artists. They do it for the same reason the faux-bisexuals do - they think it’s gonna make them look “cool”. It’s all fake and it’s quite ridiculous really - why pretend to be something you are not and never will be? OK, I think, I’ve exhausted this subject and people’s patience. I shut up. :)

  21. 21 Chronic Malanga Aug 16th, 2008 at 4:15 am

What I find hilarious about all this is not that Katy was a Christian rocker before. After all, what we do and believe at 16 doesn’t always follow into adulthood. It’s the whole “Look at me, I’m edgy and bi,” thing. Yes, it’s been mentioned in other comments already, but I’m going to say it anyway.

For the most part, I’m with Nati on this, but would like to point out that the bit for attention thing is actually way older than Nati has implied. I graduated high school in ‘91. Some of my friends that were a year or two behind that I kept in contact with, went through a collective bisexual phase that was blatantly fake. It seemed that everyone had suddenly decided to go bi in ‘92 and ‘93. Then, we had that first, completely different “I Kissed a Girl” song that was stupid, but for its time, edgy, and riding the bi for attention trend at exactly the right time. The real bi’s aren’t announcing it, though. Funny that.

So, for Katy Perry to release this song is really just a throwback to the early 90’s as far as I am concerned, and hardly edgy. The fake bi thing is passe, which makes this an even more inexplicable hit aside from the fact that the song is a shoddily written piece of pop tripe.

    Christina said:

“I dislike Katy Perry because she basically turned her back on her original fanbase when it became convenient for her to be overtly sexual and promoting sexuality.”

Which Britney Spears did. And Christina Aguilera. And Charlotte Church. And a whole bunch of others.

That makes her just another pop tart.

Maybe - MAYBE - she’ll get her head screwed on right. I hope they all do, before they become irreparably damaged.

IMHO, I’ve given up judging folks on their sexuality, skin color, how much money they have, etc. As this website shows, actions speak SO much louder than any of those other things.

I remember that original “I Kissed A Girl” song. Jill Sobule. It came on my iPod at the gym the other day.

  24. 24 Jenn Aug 16th, 2008 at 8:29 am

Holly when this song came out I thought it was going to be a remake of the Jill Sobule song, which I love and now cannot get out of my head. Fabio was in the video too. Head to youtube and watch the video - it is just so sweet and naive compared to Katy Perry’s dreck. Nati and CX with you all the way on your comments. Very astute, both of you.

  25. 25 Kim Aug 16th, 2008 at 11:17 am

She’s a fake lesbian, fake Christian, and an all-around fraud. But that’s what most of these Hollywood douchebags are like. No one cared about her as a Christina singer. So now she goes lesbian pop.

  26. 26 Besame Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

It’s a shame really. She’s become another stumbling block to so many teens. And men love it. Every time a female gives in to igniting a man’s fantasy… they win. And Jessica Simpson did the same thing… they didn’t want her in Christian music (not because her boobs were to big) but because she sounds like a tired hooker and so she stripped down to a barely there bikini and see-thru shirts to make money where her hooker sound would be appreciated. That’s not sexual freedom, that’s financial slavery.
And having a teenage daughter and two sons approaching adolescence it’s so disappointing to see how a staple such as music is going into the toilet the last ten years.

  27. 27 Rocko Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:12 pm

That was a much better song Holly.

  28. 28 biggdogg Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Wow, I’m really surprised at how judgemental some of these comments are.

  29. 29 StrawberryGirl Aug 16th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Glad somebody’s on to the whole fakery of doomed-to-one-hit-wonder-status Katy Perry.

“I Kissed A Girl” has to be the most cynical pop hit of all time. Perry didn’t write it; a whole team of hitmakers did. It’s not so much a song about lesbianism or bisexuality as it is a “Girls Gone Wild” song and it sells the idea to play bi to titillate guys. That Perry once was a Christian singer was the cherry on the cake.

I don’t know whether Perry was a real believer in her youth or not. I’m not in her head and heart. But she clearly is yet another young attractive female perfomer who sold out to make it. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10-15 years she goes back to being a Christian and whines about how those evil Hollyweirdos made her record that song.

  30. 30 Kim Aug 16th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

God, I hate this song and the whole fake bi crap. I have friends who do the whole “Hi, I’m blank and I’m bi” thing, and it always bugs me. I know people who, honest to god, think they’re bisexual or gay, and it bugs me that no one will take them or their sexuality seriously anymore because of it. It disgusts me. Plus, this song really and truly sucks.

  31. 31 jay Aug 16th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

I don’t think the song is about bisexuality at all. It’s more about wondering what something might be like, and trying it. I think people can end up happier if they’re open to trying different things to figure out what works for them. I’m not a huge fan of the song, but I can’t really see it as a wholly negative message either.

  32. 32 Christina X Aug 17th, 2008 at 12:52 am

Yes, California Dave, and seeing as I’m DEFINITELY NOT a fan of any of them (except for Britney Spears- not really her music so much as I’d like to see her recover), I think I’m pretty consistent.

Anyone who betrays their own principles to gain popularity is a jackass, in my opinion. I’m looking at just about every popular female musician under the age of 30. Granted this has most likely been happening since the beginning of the music industry, I’m pretty young so I’m referring to the ones that were crammed down my throat.

  33. 33 Carlo Aug 17th, 2008 at 2:49 am

Is this your way of catching up with the mainstream media, i.e. being months behind?

  34. 34 California Dave Aug 17th, 2008 at 5:04 am

I’ve blogged about this. Anyone remember back to Feb 2007? Everyone (well, the gossip rags) was saying Federline was a loser, that he only married Britney to further his own career, etc.

Then came word that he was - GASP - putting his kids first! He was telling Britney to get into rehab or she’d lose visitation rights! He FOUGHT for those kids. Then Britney had the meltdown, and he put his foot down again and went for full custody. Now HE’S the hero! My God, I remember the news that she gave a 45 minute deposition in the custody case. She was supposed to testify from 9am to 11:15, and she showed up at 10:30! “I’m HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERE, what more do you fucking WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT???”

For ALL the sakes of these pop tarts, I hope they get what they so desperately need: life-coaches who will kick their asses and tell them what they need to do, instead of yes-men who will tell them what they want to hear.

I truly honestly hope they get their heads screwed on before the drink and the drugs do permanent damage - and not just to their careers.

    Be seeing you…

  35. 35 Archena Aug 17th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Um, guys, if she isn’t claiming to be a Christian now then there’s no hypocrisy. Changing your views over time - even if those changes are for the worst - is not hypocrisy. Saying one thing and doing another at the same time is. As a Christian I think it’s a very regrettable change on her part but it’s not hypocritical as far as I can tell from what’s been written so far.

  36. 36 Christina X Aug 18th, 2008 at 1:08 am

Can we not make this discussion about Britney Spears? Every time a female celebrity says or does stupid, Britney Spears is brought up, and quite frankly I’m sick of hearing about it.

We apparently have clashing opinions about Britney Spears, and while I agree that she’s a pigsty, at least she has a personality unlike the other Disney androids. She may have one too many, but at least she’s not a goddamn robot.

And really, I constantly hear about Britney’s sh*t mothering skills, what about Christina Aguilera who has been photographed NUMEROUS amounts of times staggering out of bars piss drunk all the time with her kid at home? Yeah, that’s a responsible mother right there, too. No-one ever criticizes her for her parenting skills, but then again maybe if she porked up and shaved her head bald, someone finally would.

I’m done; I just wanted to make a point. I’m not talking about Britney Spears anymore.

Anyhow, I understand what it’s like to change your mind. Granted I was sixteen only a few years ago, I’ve changed my mind on a lot of important things. However, my principles have remained the same, regardless of how my political and religious beliefs have fluctuated. A change in belief doesn’t mean a change in your morals.

What I find so revolting about this Katy Perry chick is not even the change of religious beliefs, but that the lyrics to the song are so morally corrupt. You want to have premarital sex? That’s your business? You want to have casual sex with someone you’ve just met? Fine. I’m overall disgusted with how she glamorizes infidelity and it might just be me, but my own cousin’s marriage was destroyed by a lesbian affair, because his wife “just to try it”, and he was VERY hurt when he found out.

Guess what? You don’t arbitrarily change your sexual orientation just because you’re not a Christian anymore. In my opinion, Katy Perry’s bisexuality is accessory to her new image as the bad girl who rebelled against her religion. I mean, quit trying so hard.

  39. 39 Jrod Aug 18th, 2008 at 10:14 am

Yeah, all those posers acting like being gay is cool. Why can’t they just go back to mocking us and beating us mercilessly and leaving us for dead like they used to.

Society changed for the most part, gays have become an accepted part of society, so now we have to find a new way to become martyrs for our cause. And it is cool for girls to like girls. Not a lot of hetero men are going to have a problem with their girlfriend kissing another girl, so I have a problem calling it “cheating”.

Also, you know and I know that for every 99 gays born that way, there was another trail blazer who did it for kicks and liked it. Who hasn’t wanted to turn a straight guy?

All I am saying is, everyone needs to loosed up, this is a pop song, the message is campy and fun, and I am having a hard time finding the philosophical meaning of “taste of her cherry chapstick”.

  40. 40 Austin Aug 18th, 2008 at 11:48 am

“Yeah, all those posers acting like being gay is cool. Why can’t they just go back to mocking us and beating us mercilessly and leaving us for dead like they used to.”

Or, there’s option C where they stay true to who they are, respect GLBTs, and try not to capitalise on the libidinous exploitation of sexual identity in order to sell records and get famous.

“And it is cool for girls to like girls. Not a lot of hetero men are going to have a problem with their girlfriend kissing another girl, so I have a problem calling it ‘cheating’.”

First off, that is one heck of a blatant assumption. Just about every man I know would feel pretty crushed if their wife or girlfriend was stepping out on them with another woman behind their backs. In fact, I’ve known a couple of guys that this has happened to, and the emotional trauma is fairly significant.

You’re right about one thing though, anon., there’s not a drop of philosophical significance to this song (generally, there has to be something intelligent before there’s anything philosoiphical), but it does say a lot about us as a society, and I don’t think very much of it is good, either. We can start with how absolutely aphilosophical this bit of trash is…

No matter what the scene, poseurs irritate the hell out of me. When Avril Lavigne claims to be a punk, I start to twitch. When Paris Hilton started going on about her deep sense of spirituality (that lasted, what, two weeks?) it made me squint in pain. I’m not gay, so I can’t say this with any first-hand knowledge, but I imagine if I were gay, and someone who obviously had nothing more than a flinching interest in homosexuality used that as a means of whoring themselves, objectifying homosexuals, and getting rich in the process, I think I’d be pretty pissed off about that, too.

  41. 41 Anonymous Aug 19th, 2008 at 1:00 am

so what if she changed her image. when she was 16 recording christian songs she obviously was being supervised by her parents….so now she’s grown up and has different views and thoughts from what he parents may have tried to teach her. as for the “this is a bad song cause shes acting bi-sexual cause it’s the in thing” that’s crap! people it’s just a song! you guys act like she’s being serious or something come on! i love the song and in no way am i gay or bi-sexual nor do i have any urge to be either! i also do not see how the song says its ok to cheat on your boyfriend, once again it’s just a song lol. it doesn’t make me want to cheat on my boyfriend. if everyone in the world took songs so seriously like you guys do people would be messed up. it’s just a stupid song people would play at a party or w/e… it’s nothing to read deep into.

  42. 42 Christina X Aug 19th, 2008 at 2:25 am

How was that ANYTHING close to what I said?

I NEVER mentioned that homosexuality was a choice, did I? I mentioned that Katy Perry is pimping out bisexuality, and therefore makes it difficult to believe it is realistic.

I never said don’t judge people. I always judge people, especially half-naked women who coo about making out with other women. I think some judgments are more fair than others, but excuse me for doubting the legitimacy of her sexuality.

Something about an attractive woman in a miniskirt writhing around singing “I KISSED A GIRL AND I LIKED IT” just screams, “I’m trying to give you a hard on”. When she says “I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it” doesn’t sound like she’s trying to suggest that he fantasizes about it and gets randy at the thought of two girls making out. I bet the overly sexualized tone of voice and music video were a coincidence. I bet you that wasn’t on purpose.

I bet you’ve never judged a single person in your life. You must be the most naive person in the world if you don’t believe in judgment.

  43. 43 Hi Heels Lo Life Aug 19th, 2008 at 6:45 am

I don’t know who made the above post but it wasn’t me … not only am I not a fan of the song, I haven’t paid much attention to it and don’t have an opinion re: lyrics.

Mebbe this dead horseflesh is whipped to a foam already but does anyone have another explanation for why our president has bought something like 100000 acres in Paraguay? Yes a ranch right in between Mrs Mengele’s place and Alois Brunner’s summer home. You buy land in Paraguay because there’s no extradition and they protect war criminals as a cottage industry. Crawford isn’t ranch enough? Not when the FBI can find you. I thought that Presidents couldn’t be prosecuted for actions taken while in office. Perhaps he thinks his royal edicts won’t be enough to save him from the wrath of America and the world when people wake up and realize what’s happened to us, that 911 was faked so as to demolish a losing office space, Osama agreed to play the bad guy for the PNAC (google that along with “architects and engineers for 911 truth”) opera, and Americans tortured innocent people in CUBA of all places and in Iraq both where we had no business being. Is creating another generation of war-scarred Americans and transferred the treasury to those PNAC sought to serve while the economy tanks
…And was a cover up for trying (and failing) to steal natural resources via contractual obligation (treaty ask your native American neighbors about those) from Afghanistan and Iraq. Ask Hamid Kharzai who was given his office for unsuccessfully lobbying the Taliban to allow the PNAC folks to build a pipeline to bring Russian oil to the Persian gulf for transit here four times (The taliban leaders were in Crawford!)They refused we invaded. If even one of these things is true I’m pissed and some people need to get seriously smoked for treason! GW is trying to circumvent the freedom of info act so you’ll never know the truth. Just like the torture tapes POOF! At the Justice department where people were fired for political party affiliations and hired for them too? Does it stop? You’re an idiot if you think this is all unrelated.
