And Now, a Word from Pigeon O’Brien

Subject: I am not Tipper!

Heya,

I am SO NOT Page Six’s tipster, but thank your commenter for making fifty million people call to tell me I am!!! I have a bead on who that was, but am as in the dark as you. It’s not as though I’m the only one who knew about the affair! I’m just the only one who finally cracked when he lied on national TV.

There (were) other cached iterations of beingisfree that showed me on the board of directors (which Rielle called “kids on board”). If you guys could find those, I’d give you a cupcake!!!

In other Pigeon news: Apparently Imus showed a picture of her and Rielle on the TV simulcast of his radio show yesterday, which airs on RFD-TV. If anybody out there has a screencap of that, you’d get a big Deceiver thanks if you shared it.

Other J&R updates:

  • Fred Baron has donated millions of dollars to the Democratic Party in Texas over the last few years, and the Republicans can barely contain their joy.
  • At least one Edwards campaign contributor in Georgia wants her money back.
  • I don’t much like Rush Limbaugh, and the more I think about it, the more I agree that his joke about John Edwards stepping out on his dying wife because he wanted “a woman whose mouth did something other than talk” was pretty tasteless. But who’s worse, folks: The guy who made a bad joke about it or the guy who actually did it?
  • If you’re like me, you’ve been wondering what Roseanne Barr thinks about all this:

john edwards is an a****** but bush stole all of our money and killed innocent babies and children and women with it…there’s a frickin scandal for ya! and he doesn’t even have to answer for it one one hundredth as much as edwards is being assailed for f***ing one slutty coke whore. The media cares more about sneaky sex than about torture death and holocaust.

    (RoseanneWorld, via Gawker)

  • And in this corner, Chuck Norris — yes, the Chuck Norris:

John Edwards categorically denies that Hunter has bore his child and says he cut off their relationship in 2006. Yet, he or someone close to him allegedly met just a few weeks ago with her and the baby in a Beverly Hills hotel? And he even continues to minimize his culpability by playing linguistic and moral dodge ball. He lied to his closest colleagues and the public for nearly two years about the affair. And even in his confession last week, he doesn’t call it a “lie,” a “sin,” an “affair,” “adultery,” etc. Rather he repeatedly calls it merely a “mistake” or “serious error of judgment.” Is that all it is?

I think he and Roseanne should have a debate on the issue. In the octagon! It’d be a fair fight. He’s got at least 10 years on her, and if she can take him to the ground, it’s all over.

  • As DBKP points out, Dec. 31, 2006 must have been a very busy day for the Edwards clan.
  • As usual, our commenters are coming up with all kinds of good stuff.
  • And finally, on an administrative note: Aug. 16 is Deceiver’s 9-month anniversary. Which seems appropriate, given the big story over the last few weeks.
  • 8/17 update: CBS News talks to David Perel, editor-in-chief of the National Enquirer. But my favorite quote is from New York Magazine’s Kurt Anderson:

“I think this will be a lesson. I think this John Edwards case will be a moment we’ll look back in three, five, ten years hence and say that was one of the moments when the main street media [sic] realized that they can’t make assumptions about the truth of a story based on where it popped up.”

Pigeon, you and Cheri Young are the only two people in this whole sad story that are going to come out smelling like roses.

Go forth and prosper. You deserve it.

  2. 2 Rocko Aug 16th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

    Lady, go away.

  3. 3 Simon Scowl Aug 16th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

No offense, Rocko, but you’re not exactly batting 1000 on this one. ;)

  4. 4 PJ Aug 16th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

And just what does the National Enquirer have up its sleeve that it’s holding back? Must be something really juicy.

  5. 5 Susan Aug 17th, 2008 at 12:46 am

My first prediction is that the National Enquirer has already performed its own DNA tests on baby and Edwards, thus they KNOW the baby is his. Before just recently, I think Rielle felt free to take her baby around in public and I’m sure she had loads of diapers and spit rags that she tossed, and how hard would it have been to get a coffee cup that Edwards has used?

But I’m still trying to figure out how a 42 year old lady “accidentally” got pregnant… DBKP has some links to posts on this… so maybe the Enquirer has some info along those lines…

Oh and the video… I can’t wait to see Edwards hiding in the bathroom… but I can’t figure out why the Enquirer is holding on to that!

By the way, I like Pigeon! I was all ready to dismiss her… but she spoke in the several interviews I saw (seemingly) honestly & articulately…

  6. 6 Rocko Aug 17th, 2008 at 2:07 am

Yea, I know Simon. I’m genuinely surprised. There’s so much other news and this stayed alive for a week, playing out like a bad Maury Povich episode. But I can see why Edwards went with this Rielle chick, apparently she knows hos to keep her mouth shut or at least how to hide from the press.

  7. 7 Dr Fager Aug 17th, 2008 at 2:09 am

I agree with Susan on the DNA test. The Enquirer doesn’t say “Edwards’ alleged baby”, they say “Edwards’ baby”. The Enquirer has first rate lawyers vetting this story, so they must have proof of paternity.

  8. 8 Fortunate Son Aug 17th, 2008 at 9:04 am

I am more likely to classify this source as intentional misinformation than information, but Ted Casablancas says Rielle Hunter is living in Malibu.

    Hiding in plain sight?

The National Enquirer states Hunter left Oxnard airport at 2am on August 6, 2008 and she was flown out of the country.

Strategically thinking, out of the country is the best possible place for Edwards to keep her, but Ted Casablancas says ‘Malibu’.

    Time will tell.

In a corrected post, Overlawyered speculates on how on October 17, 2007, Andrew Young paid in full a $272,700 mortgage.

That’s not to say there’s nothing interesting about the Toben transaction: note that Young purchased the Conservation Ridge property in Orange County with a $272,700 mortgage in 2005 and paid off the mortgage in full on October 17, 2007–just three weeks after insinuations about Rielle Hunter were in the Huffington Post (and Overlawyered), and one week after the October 10 National Enquirer story first alleged an affair. Of course, that could be a coincidence. What led Young to choose that week to pay off a mortgage?

What Rielle Hunter’s lawyer should have said on Saturday, August 9, 2008.

“A paternity test is clearly unnecessary because I already know that the father of my child is Andrew Young.”

from Mickey Kaus reader John Tabin (http://www.slate.com/id/2196758/)

  11. 11 newtothis Aug 17th, 2008 at 10:43 am

Edwards needs to just state the facts, say he will support the baby and get out of the limelight. He also needs to do some serious soul-searching and turn his life around.

He needs to put his children’s interests above his own and commit to raising them in as emotionally healthy an atmosphere as possible. What’s important is them, not him.

Let’s also see him give up the excess: the big estate he has in North Carolina, the hiding of people in exclusive neighborhoods.

Maybe if he does all this, and lives honorably for about 10 years, he can redeem himself …

  12. 12 Fortunate Son Aug 17th, 2008 at 10:50 am

    Rielle Hunter’s birthdate is March 20, 1964.

Birthdays are something special for aging new age spiritualists, and Rielle Hunter wanted to spend her birthday with her man.

The National Enquirer is allegedly alleging (love that) that John Edwards stayed at the Beverly Hilton on March 20, 2008, Rielle Hunter’s birthday, the same night he was in Los Angeles for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

So let’s take a look where Edwards was for Rielle Hunter’s birthday the two previous years.

    2006
    ====
On March 15-19, 2006, Edwards was picking up trash with college students in New Orleans. I’m sure there are a few photos taken of that occasion floating around, right?

Opportunity Rocks and John Edwards are inviting students to be a part of “Rebuilding the Gulf Coast ” with New Orleans Habitat for Humanity, March 15-19. For details visit http://www.opportunityrocks.org/springbreak/

While the Opportunity Rocks website appears to have been taken down around December 2007, the event is memorialized at:

    and
    (http://www.cived.net/What’s New Archives/What’s New Archives (March 06).htm)

    2007
    ====
On March 20, 2007, John Edwards was in Nevada, Iowa at the Biomass Energy Conversion Center, (http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0cjb6Xz0Iy4bG/610x.jpg)
and (www.youtube.com/watch?v=50yOR5bvMV0) (watch it quick, before its gone).

Here’s what Anderson Cooper said happened next:

just got off the phone with somebody close to John Edwards. Apparently here’s what happened. On Monday his wife, Elizabeth, who you’ll remember after the 2004 campaign was diagnosed with breast cancer and was treated for that. They believed that it was in remission, had a doctor’s appointment.

She was told on Tuesday that she needed to come back and see the doctor again today. John Edwards was in Iowa, a series of campaign events. He cut short that schedule to fly back to be with her. They went to the doctor together today and this press conference tomorrow is related to the results of that doctor’s appointment that Elizabeth Edwards had today.

So Elizabeth Edwards cancer recurrs the day after Rielle Hunter’s birthday while John Edwards is alone in Iowa.

A speculating man might be inclined to believe that this date is when Elizabeth Edwards determined John Edwards was cheating on her.

Fortunate Son, I think you’re right on the money.

  14. 14 PJ Aug 17th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Now when did RH say that she was fired? Very early in 2007, correct?

Looks like Markos (DailyKos)has a new book out which “argues that if activists harness new technology such as blogs, podcasting and YouTube, they can bypass the old-world gatekeepers to communicate to the masses in order to bring about political change”. What a hypocrite when Markos talks about bypassing media gatekeepers and then bans Lee Stranahan from Kos; also, check out this review of Markos’ book:
    http://www.amazon.com/Taking-System-Radical-Change-Digital/dp/0451225198/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218937925&sr=8-1

    Review
“As the founder of the blogosphere’s most lively town square - a place where Americans come to debate ideas, discuss policy, and yes, plot to “crash the gates” - Markos has already permanently altered the landscape of American politics. DailyKos and the progressive blogosphere have inspired a new generation of American patriots, determined to rise up and make their voices heard. In Taking on the System, Markos provides both a call-to-arms, and the rules of engagement, for getting active in our newly networked age. With passionate and accessible prose guaranteed to inspire and empower anyone who has ever struggled to make a difference, this book captures the spirit of our nation’s modern-day pamphleteers.” –Elizabeth Edwards

    Good ^^find^^, Kris.

If you look at what what countries surpess media in what manner and make a correlation to which country the DailyKos’ media freedom most closely represents, it certainly reminds you of one of the old guard communist countries where criticism of the monolithic party characters were punishable by banishment or house arrest.

Its pretty obvious that Markos had a personal relationship with Elizabeth Edwards and made a deal with her to supress information in much the same way the Internet Wayback Machine did.

Markos and the DailyKos are one of the big losers of the John Edwards scandal.

It is not that easy being all alone with an infant. Maybe he is stashing her somewhere she can get help. There is one more Druck sister, Jennifer, who has not made any public statements that I know of and she lives in London. Just an idea.

There are plenty of women who have NO TROUBLE getting pregnant at 43. Your chances of having a baby with Down syndrome, etc. go up but it is not that strange if you are healthy. Most women just don’t want to risk the birth defects. No way of our knowing but it is the oldest trick in the book to try to keep your man. And she could kill two birds because her time was running out if she wanted a baby. Free sperm = smart, pretty baby and $$$ for life or at least until she is in her 60’s with rich daddy’s child support. (If EE dumps her she can find a new guy and still have sweet baby taken care of.)

I am not at all surprised that Rielle has kept her mouth shut if she loves him and expects to be with him later. She doesn’t need to file for child support. I know I could live just fine on 1/2 what she is getting. And I have a feeling when the truth comes out, after NE has sold a lot more papers with this protracted process, everyone who lied will say it was to spare EE further anguish. JE would have SUED the heck out of NE if he was not the father.

I think Andrew Young is the weirdest thing about this. Wasn’t there ANYONE else who did not have a wife and children? If I were his wife i would be hopping mad.

Sounds like EE went to a lot of trouble not to miss her B-day this year. How thoughtful.

  18. 18 almostblue Aug 17th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

One more thing, if Rielle is a Borderline, as her history and some people have suggested, it makes perfect sense that she would try to get pregnant. Have worked with BPDs and they are notoriously manipulative and extremely fearful of abandonment in intimate relationships. Also very common for BPDs to hook up with NPDs. (classic dysfunctional complements)

  19. 19 PJ Aug 17th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

As a proud bleeding heart liberal, I’m very disappointed with many of the so-called progressive sites and how they’ve ignored this story, Daily Kos and Talking Points Memo in particular. When this story first broke in the NE, I e-mailed it to TPM. Nary a response. Then when NE broke the story of JE meeting RH at the Hilton, I e-mailed TPM asking if this could possibly be true, and I did get a response that time–they asked me for the link. I sent it, and again, nothing was ever posted—until the day JE made his big “confession.” Since then, they’ve posted one story about Fred Barron, big fooking deal. They were all over Spitzer, Vitter and Craig like a cheap suit. But this “unpleasantness” is just too unpleasant.

Daily Kos is even worse. When I learned that Stranahan had been banned for using the NE as a source on the JE-RH affair, I posted a diary detailing my distastement for such censorship and that I could no longer be a part of a community that tolerated this kind of nonsense. I was called every vicious name in the book, really vile stuff. This happened a few days before the Nightline interview. After that interview, there was some obligatory outrage, which quickly disappeared when EE posted that self-serving pap (and which Markos heartily endorsed, just vomitous verbiage). The Dembot Lemmings quickly refreshed themselves, and when one poster had the temerity this week to opine that the JE disaster was not about to go away and would likely cast a pall over the national convention, once again, the poster was excoriated.

I really, really hope that the NE has a tremendous bombshell up their sleeve.

Looks like the “Half in Ten” campaign that features (featured?) Edwards as its main spokesperson is now distancing itself from the man in a big way; compare its cached pages with the current website:

Thanks for noticing the Kos connection to the Edwards with the new book he’ll be hocking - I wish someone would crash the gates over at DailyKos and mention it to THEM…

Guys, even if you rammed it up their butts, they’d find an excuse. They were already hyperventilating over the JE photos, saying how they were photoshopped/fake…
