British journalist Tanya Gold has a new column that could well be Deceiver’s mission statement.
She writes about Stella McCartney’s petty feud with Gwyneth Paltrow for wearing fur, but takes it a step further by pointing out all the sweatshop labor used to manufacture McCartney’s collection for H&M.
And then there’s Sienna Miller, who, as an ambassador for Global Cool, hasn’t really stayed consistent to the message of reducing emissions. In addition to acting as a spokeswoman for Tod’s, one of the World Wildlife Federation’s lowest-rated companies due to its (lack of) environmental policies, she traveled to Mumbai last year and told the locals “if each one of us does our bit, we will be helping to keep global warming from harming our countries.”
Pretty ballsy coming from someone who flew halfway across the world, probably in a private jet, to deliver the message to people who couldn’t possibly have as large a carbon footprint as she does.
And so on. My favorite quote, which could be applied to every PETArd we’ve written about:
Indeed, you got rich in an industry that is built on making women feel like beach balls, where skeletal models are partly responsible for the epidemic of anorexia and bulimia sweeping the West. And you dare to lecture us about fur?

Well, at least she’s got great legs. Plural!
“Pretty ballsy coming from someone who flew halfway across the world, probably in a private jet….”
Probably in a private jet? Probably?
Sienna may be all of what we think she is, but using words like “Probably” isn’t fair.
Stella certainly has a leg up on Heather Mills.
Chris
Recently read where Gwyneth “married to a vegan, all about the macrobiotic thing” P. is also shilling for Tod’s. Even if she eats meat, I guess her husband doesn’t care where the money comes from??? Even if it involves gear from dead animals???

yeah apparently gwyenth won some “green” award but she models for tod’s who uses fur? interesting.
and chris - your comment made me laugh out loud.. funny how both stella and heather are for PETA but they hate each other, lol
we do not care about these people, their causes and the little ‘bun fights’ they get into with each other nearly as much as the media thinks we do.
Celebrities are almost always the worst people you could have to promote a cause. They lack moral authority (see: the homewrecking whore Sienna Miller), they indulge in their lavish lifestyles while knocking the rest of us for turning on lights or driving to work, and they’re woefully uninformed.
Totally agree with StrawberryGirl. Celebrities get to travel around the world in their jets, cars and boats, then tell the rest of us to “do our part”. It really drives me. Really, you shouldn’t go to people who have way less than you and say they are living a wastful lifestyle. That’s funny about Stella McCartney though. It’s bad to hurt animals, but making people work in sweatshops is OK. Wow some people just have no clue!
Sorry, I don’t see the hypocrisy. Sweatshops are terrible, but I can see how they’re not on par with fur for some people. In sweatshops you abuse people by paying them very little and working them very hard, while in the fur industry you abuse animals by ripping their skin while they’re alive and letting them die a painful death. If someone’s values state that human and animal lives are similar in value, there’s no question that the fur industry is by far more horrible than sweatshops, according to that someone’s values.
You may disagree with these values, you may call them stupid or ignorant, but this isn’t hypocrisy.
@ Anon - You don’t see that apathy in regards to one source of injustice and suffering that said celebreties are directly linked to doesn’t undermine their supposed deep concern about a source of injustice and suffering that they aren’t directly linked to? I’m sorry, but it’s hard for me to respect the moral high ground of someone who allows themselves to support anorexia and slavery, but gets so huffy about mistreatment in the fur/meat/whatever-that-involves-animals industry.
At least in the fur trade, the suffering ends relatively quickly…
just wondering all these PETA celebs , do they wear canvas shoes, or are they leather??? Its a serious question guys! hehe
I totally agree with Anonymous above Austin and would like to add that it’s ridiculous to compare the plight of animals in fur farms with the influence that fashion may have on impressionable young women. The latter have a choice, for god’s sake, and are not being tortured by anyone, except for their wonderful intellect.
where did you hear about the sweatshops? h&m works incredibly hard to be socially conscious and keep the company sweatshop free.
