Every Day, in Every Way, the John Edwards Story Gets Better and Better

  • “When it comes to rounding up John Edwards news and links, I can’t hope to compete with Deceiver.” — Mickey Kaus, Rielle-Hunter #1 #2
  • Kaus also links to a story I missed from the Aug. 14 Santa Barbara Independent. (The last few weeks are kind of a blur, but I think I glanced at that one and dismissed it because of the “Angry Poodle” drawing. D’oh!) It says that Rielle is, “underneath that extravagantly New Age exterior, tough as nails and hard as rock.” And somewhat smarter than both!
  • Paul Mulshine looks at the origin of the “Riley” mispronunciation. So much for my theory that it referred to the sort of life she was leading before this news broke.
  • John Kerry feels “very, very badly” for the Edwards family. Why the long face, Senator?
  • The National Enquirer is promising more baby pictures tomorrow. If a six-month-old could write a meticulously worded non-denial denial, we’d be seeing it right about now. “While admittedly my very existence implies that my mother was impregnated at some point in the summer of 2007, I have no specific knowledge that John Edwards is my father. Also, if somebody could please change my diaper, that would be great.”
  • Did you know that John Edwards, private citizen who nobody cares about anymore, has delegates going to the DNC next week? Sure, they’ll be voting for Obama, but they’re still Edwards delegates. Sounds like they feel a bit silly. (Update: But he won’t be there himself. Which I’m sure was the plan all along, right?)
  • Gawker has a clip of Rielle’s shining moment as an actress, appearing opposite a young Denzel in the 1991 action-thriller Ricochet. She played a pushy, excitable reporter, which is just perfect. (Note to Netflix: Buy more Ricochet DVDs!)
  • As blogger Matt Schiavenza points out, the Wikipedia entry on this scandal has over 100 citations. It’s weird that a few weeks ago it wasn’t even considered worthy of inclusion, huh?
  • Via The Beltway Boys on Fox News (boo!), I like Jon Stewart’s response (yay!) to Edwards’ clarification that “none of my family are responsible for this but me.”
  • Per John in North Carolina, a couple of NC newspapers are bickering over which one broke the story of the baby’s fatherless birth certificate. Which is even funnier when you consider that the little tyke was born in California.
  • Is this whole thing just a private matter between a husband, a wife, and a political action committee?
  • As I listen to Rielle’s 911 call about the paparazzi following her, I’m struck by her hesitation — “Uh, uh, uh, uh…” — when the 911 operator asks why they’re trying to take pictures of Rielle and the baby. It’s almost like she’s thinking, “Okay, I need help here, but they record these calls, so I need to choose my words very carefully…” I also like how almost every statement Rielle makes sounds like a question? Plus, this audio is just further confirmation that she pronounces it “Ree-elle.”
  • According to Inside Edition, Rielle made that call from an LA freeway “just one week before the story of her affair broke.” (I think they mean one week before the research thieves at ABC News “broke” the story on 8/8, not one week before the Enquirer actually broke the story on 7/22.) Inside Edition also says: “Shortly after the call Hunter was flown out of the country on a private jet to [a] secret location, where she currently remains. INSIDE EDITION has learned the photographer tailing her was later cited for making an illegal U-turn.” So if nothing else, at least this whole thing is taking some of the heat off George Clooney.
  • 8/20 update: According to the Enquirer, Rielle and the baby were flown to St. Croix by private jet on 8/7. They stayed there for about 10 days in a home owned by Lee Rohn, yet another trial lawyer with ties to Edwards. Then the Enquirer tracked them down and they were flown back to Santa Barbara. The Enquirer is also directly accusing Edwards of orchestrating this expensive game of tag (Rielle’s carbon footprint is getting ridiculous) and the various payoffs. And they’ve got a pic of Rielle and the baby on the cover. I can’t tell at a glance if it’s the same kid from the previous photo, but so far the Enquirer has been right about this story…

  • Another 8/20 update: Allahpundit at Hot Air says it best. “There sure are a lot of pals in [Edwards'] orbit willing to do extremely extravagant favors for a woman he had only a brief dalliance with two years ago, aren’t there? You’d think people like Rohn and Fred Baron would cut her off at this point lest their largesse appear any more suspiciously coordinated and incriminating for Edwards. But no, the favors keep flowing unbidden, even now that the story’s broken wide open and each new favor they do only draws closer media scrutiny upon themselves.”

Swinger’s producer Cary Woods introduced Rielle Hunter to Edwards’ staff in June 2006, which if Pigeon’s version is accurate, means Edwards’ set up an elaborate cover story to employ his mistress with campaign funds.

Where’s Cary Woods? Who paid him off and who paid off the Internet Wayback Machine?

The producer, Cary Woods, set up a June 2006 meeting to introduce Hunter to Edwards’s top political aides and to describe his vision for the personalized, web-based videos that would put Hunter and Edwards in close proximity for months — including at the event where he formally announced his candidacy.

“The producer introduced us to [Reille] and said, ‘Hey I’ve got this cool idea,’” a former Edwards aide who was privy to the discussions with Woods said. That led to a lunch in Georgetown at the restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Fahrenheit, attended by Woods, Hunter and a top Edwards adviser.

Brent Rosenthal of Baron’s former firm, Baron & Budd says Baron would have intentionally insulated Edwards as a legal strategy.

He is an incredibly loyal person. So I think he would do anything he could to protect somebody he believes deserves his support. No. 2., if he were to tell Edwards, then Edwards would then have some link and some knowledge of it. So if this was a way of protecting Edwards, I think it only makes sense to withhold that from the candidate.”

Yet, Rosenthal says that Baron likely would have made sure that he wasn’t violating campaign finance laws in assisting Hunter or Young (see Saturday’s WSJ story). “I don’t think his loyalty would extend to violating the law or to blatantly misrepresenting something to a candidate or to the person who is employing him. But I do think he would do whatever it took within those limits to protect someone he was loyal to.”

Whatever else can be said of Lisa Druck and John Edwards, (I like to call her Druck because it sounds like DRECK and rhymes with ____. It’s the perfect name for her.) they really have remained consistent in their personal ambitions and lack of character.

Trial lawyers like JE are known to be fake, manipulative and self-serving. So he became a lying, cheating politician, faking his values and his stalwart husband act.

Druck has always craved the spotlight, manipulated men for money and fallen into whatever the latest trend was.

80’s-spoiled NYC party-girl. cokehead. So representative of that culture she was a character in books that captured the zeitgeist. Lived off her crooked lawyer Daddy’s money and rich, corrupt members of the after work berzerk crowd.

90’s -hippy chick but somehow still living off of a lawyer. Then started a “foundation” for her cause an living in LA-LA Land.

Present day- still living off a lawyer and still keeping up with the trends. What’s the trendiest thing to be? A mommy of a celebrity-pretty baby. You gotta’ give her credit. She’s right on target.

Will ANYTHING GOOD come from this train wreck? Losing faith here. Liz Edwards needs to get AWAY from that man and his mess.

While the reporting on the Edwards thing is A how about turning the attention on Obama and his lies about the Born-Alive Bill, his associations with Bill Ayers and every other lie that comes out of his mouth? Surely, both of these scumbags can be ewxposed for the lying hypocrites that they are?

Subject: John Edwards - Fred Baron Payments Questions

The information on the internet does not jibe. There is probably a logical explanation but it is not apparent.

    1. Reports filed by the Edwards campaign show many (apparently 128) payments for “airfare” to Frederick Baron (Federal Election Commission, fec.gov; opensecrets.org). There are more airfare payments to Frederick Baron than any other airfare payee.

    2. There appears to be only one entry for airfare payment to Baron & Budd, of $2,517, according to the Open Secrets website.

    3. Baron’s full name is Frederick Martin Baron. He lives in Dallas, TX (Wikipedia entry for Fred Baron, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Baron; website for Baron’s charitable foundation, Baron & Blue Foundation, baronandbluefdn.org).

    4. Baron’s Wikipedia page and many news items on the internet state the campaign paid Fred Baron $1.1 million (or other substantial figures, depending on the date reported) to rent his Hawker 800 private jet.

    5. FAA records and other sites, such as aircraftdata.net, do not show any aircraft - - whether a Hawker 800 or other aircraft - - registered in the name of Fred or Frederick M. Baron. Two planes are registered to a Fred N. Baron in Garberville, CA. Neither is a Hawker 800. Fred N. Baron seems to be unconnected to Fred/Frederick M. Baron of Dallas, TX.

6 The Hawker 800, formerly manufactured by Raytheon, is now the BAE 125 Series 800, manufactured by British Aerospace and assembled by Hawker Beechcraft, according to the Wikipedia page, Hawker 800 ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_800).

    7. A BAE 125 800, N-number 178AX, has been registered to Baron & Budd since January 2006, FAA online aircraft registration data shows

    8. Fred Baron and his wife, Lisa Blue, sometimes known as Lisa Baron, left Baron & Blue in 2002 and litigation ensued between the Barons and the firm (Fred Baron’s Wikipedia page). Neither Fred Baron nor Lisa Blue are listed as lawyers at Baron & Budd’s website, baronandbudd.com. It seems unlikely the firm’s BAE 125 a/k/a Hawker 800 is leased to or actually owned by the Barons.

If there are no registration records for an aircraft in Fred Baron’s name, why is the campaign paying Frederick Baron for airfare? If Fred Baron’s ownership is through a corporation, why were the payments listed repeatedly to him instead of the corporation? Assuming there is error, and Fred Baron does, in fact, own a Hawker 800 (or BAE 125 800), why would he engage in the business of leasing it and receiving substantial income in his individual name rather than doing business through a corporation for liability and tax reasons? He is a lawyer and would know to consider a corporation for doing business. He set up a not-for-profit corporation for his charitable foundation, Baron & Blue, so it seems like he would also set up a corporate entity for his aircraft leasing business and require all payments to be made to it. If a payment were made erroneously to the individual rather to the business once or twice, it could be a simple error, but it seems unusual that dozens of payments would be paid to Baron individually. Would there not be a difference in accounting for income and being able to deduct expenses for an individual and a corporation? Would it be possible, if payments were made to an individual for jet leasing, that excess funds could be paid without easy detection and then passed on to other parties?

On the other hand, it seems such an obvious mistake that surely there is some mistake by the campaign in reporting or by Edwards and Baron, both lawyers.

Did Fred Baron personally pay income tax on the $1.1 million jet lease payments? Is it possible to obtain flight records to determine how payments were applied to flights? Can the campaign provide a copy of the contract with Fred Baron for jet leasing and cancelled checks made in payment? Is it possible to compare flight expense data of Edwards’ campaign with other candidates to see if the expenses are in the ballpark?

Does anyone have information on a Hawker 800 or other aircraft owned by Fred/Frederick M. Baron, including registration, N-number (the tail number?) and photos?

On a different topic, if Midline Groove was paid in excess of $114,000 for video production pursuant to a contract, did Midline Groove or the campaign pay Rielle Hunter’s hotel and meals expenses on the road? Can the campaign provide a contract to make clear how those expenses were paid and to clear up other questions about the services provided?

  12. 12 Phil Ander Aug 20th, 2008 at 12:46 am

    Correctio:
Paragraph 8. should read that Baron and his wife left the law firm of Baron & Budd, not Baron & Blue.

Rielle is back in Santa Barbara!

Rielle’s “Destination: St. Croix in the Virgin Islands!

THE ENQUIRER tracked Rielle to St. Croix where our reporters discovered Rielle and the baby stayed in a luxurious oceanfront home owned by controversial trial lawyer Lee Rohn, another close friend of Edwards.

When visited by an ENQUIRER reporter on August 15, Rohn snapped a terse “No comment!” when questioned about Hunter.

Former Virgin Island Senator Anne Golden confirmed to THE ENQUIRER that “within 24 hours of their arrival that they were here and staying with Lee Rohn.”

After the ENQUIRER discovered Rielle’s hideaway with Rohn, she was moved to a motel on the island before returning to Santa Barbara on August 17 according to another source.

An ENQUIRER reporter then saw Rielle back in her California home, which is being paid for by Edwards’ former finance chairman Fred Baron.

And Rielle now has an off-duty police officer guarding her house. “

Lee J. Rohn also employs ex-FBI personnel as private investigators.

Sheraw is a former FBI agent who owns and operates Dennis Sheraw & Associates, a licensed private investigation agency.

According to documents filed with the court and the V.I. Bar Association, Sheraw says that ICC hired him in 1997 to investigate the activities of Sen. Adlah Donastorg Jr. and the V.I. Public Services Commission that ICC considered questionable.

I think Jonathan Darman has not been completely forthcoming in his story. He is very vague in his dates. “Weeks later”, “late spring”, “early summer”.

These days, anyone can look through their old email or credit card receipts and find out exactly when they had lunch two years ago.

His generic and unspecific chronology seems to be deliberate obfuscation.

Let’s take another look at Jonathan Darman’s Newsweek article:

    November 22, 2006
    =================
“We agreed to meet at Aqua Grill in SoHo on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving”.
[That would be Tuesday, November 22, 2006 (40 days before 2007).]

“She wondered if I might be interested in writing a story. “Sure,” I said, “if you let me see the films, we can talk about that.”
[At this point Darman has not yet viewed the 'Webisodes']

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/151783/page/1

    December 25, 2006
    =================
“this week he will launch a series of short documentaries on his Web site”
[Monday, December 25, 2006 (six days until 2007) At this point, Darman has already viewed the 'Webisodes' but they have not been made public and he does not know she has been fired.]
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/44245

    December 25, 2006–June 20, 2007
    ================================
“When I next saw Rielle weeks later, she told me that she’d been fired by the Edwards campaign.”
[Technically, the phrase "weeks later" could even mean 52 weeks later. It could also mean either meeting below.]
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/151783/page/2

    May 5, 2007 –June 20, 2007
    ===========================
    “lunch at Soho House.”
[Spring has 92 days and spans March 20, 2007 to June 20, 2007. If we assume 'late spring' 2007 means the second half, or at least 46 days in, would be May 5, 2007.]

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/151783/page/2

    June 21, 2007 — August 7, 2007
    ===============================
“At lunch early that summer, I asked Rielle if she was dating anyone. She answered simply, “I’m in love.” I asked, “Who with?” “I can’t tell you,” she said, “but maybe someday we’ll all be friends.”
[Summer 2007 is 93 days if we take the first half as 47 days, that caps the halfway point of summer at Tuesday, August 7.]

Also, the “real” reason the MSM has ignored the Edwards story, they knew it all along!

“The reason is that the John Edwards story never quite held together. As a trial lawyer, Edwards had ridden the frustrations of the poor to fabulous wealth. But one could never be sure that, as a politician, his populist spiel wasn’t part of a plan for further self-enrichment. He seemed to love money too much…”

“…So despite an appealing message, the cracks were always visible in the Edwards edifice. That’s why astute observers were not surprised when it came crashing down. They walked around the smoking ruins and never looked back.”

Just saw the the new NE pic and WOW!!! That is one clear image. Not all babies look the same and not all of them are cute either. Quinn is gorgeous. Nice matching designer duds and scarf as well. That picture completely makes me think Rielle is working closely with the NE in order to leverage her way into getting exactly what she wants which is for JE to admit paternity and leave his wife.

It may work. How can EE stand by while they print on the first page about them being together after she dies? Sick puppies. Seeing the baby really brings it home to me how warped they are. Poor sweet baby. Mommy probably dressed her up for her first non-spy cover shot. How is that CRAZY woman using her poor baby like that? It is beyond depraved. I would rather find a way to make money and be a single mother than resort to that. I guess she will be rich getting money from NE and EE at the same time. And she is supposed to be so spiritual and into “bad energy” and karma? What kind of energy surrounds a mother using her innocent baby to extort money? I think Quinn is a ittle young to be having to “work” to support the family. She should just file for ordinary child support and the state will make sure the DNA tests are done. But that would be too boring and she wouldn’t become a celebrity, would she? Fame at any price I guess. Nice woman.

And I still think JE’s going to come out with the BS that he denied being her father to spare his wife more trauma. Sigh….

  32. 32 Simon Scowl Aug 20th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

But if she wants Edwards to admit paternity, why is she refusing to consent to a paternity test?

  33. 33 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Aug 20th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

It’s all about playing both sides of the field. Demanding a paternity test would be very confrontational and might get a bad reaction from Edwards. Leek a couple cute photos to NE just to keep the drama & speculation going, but don’t piss-off (sugar)daddy.

And besides, she knows he’s the father. She don’t need no stinkin’ test, unless she’s got some madonna complex whirrling around in that head of hers.

Cynicism alert: I bet John Edwards designed this whole charade thinking that EE wouldn’t last this long. His wife would die sometime in late 2007, he’d garner tons of sympathy, which he could parlay into a cabinet position, and then marry Rielle and “adopt” her pretty little girl, who “just looks so much like him!”

  34. 34 Fortunate Son Aug 20th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Its my guess that the pictures on the front page of the NE are courtesy of Roxanne Marshall (born Roxanne Druck).

    She stated in an interview:

“I’ve seen the pictures of the baby she looks like John Edwards. She’s got his eyes and jaw line and lips, but she does have Rielle’s nose.”

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/08/12/2008-08-12_john_edwards_is_the_daddy_rielle_hunter_.html

  35. 35 almostblue Aug 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

My guess is she is being TOLD to say that and she has to appear to be wanting to cover up the truth to keep JE on her side.
Like when she was stuttering on the 911 tape, carefully choosing words, etc. If Edwards thinks she is tipping the press doesn’t that risk his dumping her? She can always go back and request the DNA test later if for some reason he stops the money flow and stays with EE.

Right now she probably thinks she is winning. She’s got guards, tons of attention,
a house, money and him leading her to believe they will EVENTUALLY be together. All friends/family say she expects to be with him. She does not want the world to think she slept with TWO marrried men, even if she does have a lousy rep to begin with!

It looks to me like she is the type to play both sides. IMO she is a huge risk taker and this would be consistent. (sleeps with married men, has a baby at 43 with high risk of birth defects, etc.)

At first I thought it was one of the sisters in cahoots with NE and maybe it is. (scruples do not appear to run in this family) If JE asks her how they got the pix she can feign ignorance.

Someone sued Internet Wayback Machine to remove their website from being archived a full six months after they pulled Rielle Hunter’s website in the dead of night.

The Internet Archive, housed in a taxpayer funded Federal Archive, holds a lot of keys to who instigated the coverup.

Why isn’t the press asking them any questions?

    May 5th, 2007 at 12:05 am

“According to an Apr. 25 announcement, “Internet Archive, a library of historical Web site content, and Suzanne Shell, the author and owner of the Web site http://www.profane-justice.org, jointly announced today the settlement of their lawsuit, which stemmed from the archiving of Ms. Shell’s Web site in Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. … The Internet Archive said, ‘Internet Archive has no interest in including materials in the Wayback Machine of persons who do not wish to have their Web content archived. We recognize that Ms. Shell has a valid and enforceable copyright in her Web site and we regret that the inclusion of her Web site in the Wayback Machine resulted in this litigation. We are happy to have this case behind us.’” The Wayback Machine allows interested persons to go back to examine what particular web pages looked like at earlier dates. Jason Lee Miller has more at WebProNews (Apr. 25) as does John Ottaviani at Technology and Marketing Law Blog (Mar. 14 and May 1), both focusing on Shell’s theory that visiting spiders are capable of creating contractual relations. We covered a case raising some of the same issues on Jul. 13, 2005.”

    Fortunate Son,

Roxanne was my original pick as well. She said in the Inside Edition interview something to the effect of “If he would just come clean it would all stop,” which sounds a bit like she has some control over the matter. Hmmm…

But I was confused because she also TRASHED her sis badly in that interview so why would Lisa be sending her pix and trusting her with info? I read they have been out of touch for years. I had the feeling that someone other than Lisa showed them to her. Melissa is the one who was defending her. (Sister relationships are complicated.)

Snoop, we cross-posted. I agree. She doesn’t need a test, per se but she does want the baby to be claimed by JE or proven to be his so she can have her proper, celebrity baby-mama status. Otherwise she’s just another single mom. If she had REALLY wanted this to be a secret there would be no spy-cam baby shots OR posed shots in the NE. There had to be some amount of cooperation from her. If JE thinks he is dealing with an honest, upstanding person in Lisa Druck he is even more self-deluding than I thought.

I have not read the complete NE articles but to my knowledge there is NOTHING particularly negative written about Lisa Druck in them which is amazing considering the heaping piles of dirty laundry she has amassed in her 44 years. Why would they miss out on such juicy stuff unless they don’t want to kill their source? It seems like Roxanne would be feeding them more negative tidbits. By the way, one of the people writing from the Ocala equestrian set claims that BOTH Roxanne AND Lisa used tons of blow and that Roxanne had to have reconstructive surgery on her nose. Another quote from Roxanne was that they, “were all raised the same way.”

  39. 39 PJ Aug 20th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

There are only two reasons in the world (that I know of) for a woman to take a paternity test: either to prove—or disprove—that someone is the father.

IF JE was not the Bio-Daddy, then one would rightly assume, even expect, that RH and AY would want to clear JE–given that right now JE’s credibility is on par with a slug.

  40. 40 Rres Aug 20th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Edwards grew, Hunter blew, Obama knew!

Wow, obviously, John Edwards is very scared of something that he has told Rielle Edwards. What does Rielle know? She knows what John said about Clinton and Obama. With the DNC coming up, the Enquirer should make a one time $1 million dollar offer to Rielle Hunter, if you’re going to sing, sing now. Edwards is so afraid of the truth…..the truth is that Obama and Edwards had discussed his sex scandal long ago, and that Obama still kept him on the VP list in order to get his delegates! So, Rielle blew, and Obama knew!!!

  41. 41 Sam Aug 20th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

I still think the lack of paternity testing has to do with EE. They are going to pretend he is telling the truth while she is alive. I really think this is all being done at her request. She does not want to have to deal with it and she knows her time is limited. I know, I know, this is the Chinese water torture, but I think she has surrounded herself with the faithful and their closest friends and she has created her own private little world and the mote surrounding this is protected by Sir Galahad (Baron) and she isn’t going to ‘let’ JE admit anything while she is alive. Period. She just does not care.

No wonder the DailyKos banned Lee - besides Elizabeth writing the forward as well as a positive review for Markos’ latest book, check out the Kos gang in New Orleans at the end of December 2006 when Edwards was announcing that he was running for president:

  43. 43 almostblue Aug 20th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

I don’t know what I would want but losing a child and then knowing you are leaving children behind long before they are grown must already be quite the private hell. That’s why this thing he did is so disgusting, so far beyond his betrayal of his supporters and the Democratic Party.

JE “just does not care” about anyone but himself and never did or this never would have happened. Ditto for his sleazy mistress. They will make a scary couple.

There are still good men out here but they seldom run for public office.

  44. 44 Sunflower Aug 20th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

IF JE was not the Bio-Daddy, then one would rightly assume, even expect, that RH and AY would want to clear JE–given that right now JE’s credibility is on par with a slug.

Yeah, especially since we are told that AY’s wife is is in the know and they are all one big happy weird family, so it’s not like it’s going to hurt AY’s marriage (any further).

Also, the fastest way to get the media and paparazzi off your tail is to take a Paternity Test - I guess this group just likes uprooting the kids and trotting across country all the dang time.

    I think Jane @ Aug 20th, 2008 at 8:15 pm nailed it.

The bad thing about these scandals is that they make me so cynical I do not want to vote at all.

Did his mistress come up with the t-shirt slogan?

  47. 47 Fortunate Son Aug 20th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Yes, but Rielle Hunter’s t-shirt probably had the words “in Bed” appended below the slogan.

  48. 48 PJ Aug 20th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

I disagree. I can’t believe EE wouldn’t care. She is reportedly “distraught” over JE’s reputation being “tarnished”. This is her husband’s legacy, this is the man who is going to have to shoulder being both mother and father to their children when she is gone. Of course she cares, but due to her medical condition, may not be able to do much about it.

And I have pretty much given up on the ostriches at Daily Kos. They don’t get it, they truly don’t.

Then RH shows up preggers and if Edwards knows he knocked her up he again honestly acknowledges the affair, acknowledges a child was apparently conceived during the affair.

He says he is going to financier/support the baby the mother, and EE comes out and says she has encourgaed John to seek partial custody, since she is a southern religious woman she does not gave it in her to deny and innocent child.

Was Gandalph married? JK Rowling said that Dumbledore was gay so he might not make the ticket.

Perhaps they think they can insulate the younger kids for a while. A lot may depend on what stage the cancer is at. Your immune system can just shut down after an emotional blow like she has had. I have always liked her and thought to myself that SHE should have been the one running.

Does anyone know if the NE has ever gone so far as DNA tests? It seems like they are going somewhere with this but what else could they have besides a goofy video of Edwards hiding out in the men’s room?

Someone at Kos is taking a poll on whether to reinstate Stranahan. I read some of the comments and I have to say there is something WEIRD about what they call their “community.” Not kidding. I am new to all this, of course but what the ___ is with the “hiding ratings” or whatever they are called? It all seems VERY juvenile. It’s like if they don’t like what you say you get kicked out of their little tree fort. Again, it’s just my perspective as an outsider but I thought the web was supposed to be inclusive.

Friedman thinks the mole is Roxanne.

But Friedman also opines that story is just going to fizzle out because…”The funny thing is, there’s no point to any of this. If Edwards doesn’t go beyond his earlier statement that he had an affair with Hunter but isn’t the baby’s father, and if Hunter isn’t talking, then their story is soon going to die a natural death. It’s already outlasted a normal news cycle. It’s not as if Edwards is running for anything. And he’ll always have to live with what he’s done to his wife. That should be punishment enough.”

Friedman doesn’t get the money angle, which I find surprising since he’s usually so astute: since JE and RH have already admitted to the affair, why then are his surrogates still paying her off and ferrying her around as if she had the plague?

  57. 57 The Oversneer Aug 21st, 2008 at 11:00 am

Looking at this week’s National Enquirer photo of a happy Rielle and child, I have to say she is the winner in this soap opera. She also seems to be the smartest person among all players. She apparently has the know-how to have gotten a group of millionaire trial lawyers to send hundreds of thousands of dollars her way … and to behave like fools in the process … (Guys: Stop hiding her and playing other games. It’s obvious by now that the National Enquirer will discover your every move.

Who can help but suspect that Rielle also is a source for the National Enquirer (and therefore also getting money from it)?

Edwards, Baron, etc… You have been bested! Rielle is the winner. You are the losers.

Elizabeth Edwards: Take yourself out of this Keystone Kops situation. You deserve much better.

Rielle: It’s not my style, but you have moxie — and a precious and cute baby. Take good care of her.

Andrew and Cherie Young: Go on “Oprah,” do some good works and make your lives normal again for your kids.

  59. 59 PJ Aug 21st, 2008 at 11:46 am

I agree, the Youngs’ behavior has been curious, at best. Clearly, they are loyal to Edwards, but if they that loyal, why get paid off for doing so? I mean, didn’t AY fall on the paternity petard out of the goodness of his heart? Or did he agree to it with the understanding that JE will step up and claim the kid as his own when EE is gone? The Youngs’ kids are small now, but they won’t be forever. I can just imagine the conversations they’ll have in the future.

  60. 60 almostblue Aug 21st, 2008 at 12:56 pm

The sacrificial lamb #s are getting high and the contest for most misplaced loyalty is tough to call. Would you expose yourself to this kind of scrutiny where there are hundreds of people looking to find dirt on you? For a pal? JE is starting to look like a different level of Manson.

I agree that Lisa Druck is coming out ahead so far but that could change. She might actually get stuck with JE who behaves like a sociopath and something tells me she is not the type to want to raise 4 kids. While she is watching the kids, who will watch JE and how will she fit in her public appearances? I guess she’ll have his millions to keep her warm.

People are people, politicians are politicians. Plato’s astute observation from the Republic still stands, and that is that the people who best deserve to be in a place of power simply won’t seek it, and those who do seek it do not deserve to be there.

Hey PJ, I love how Fox’s Roger Friedman knows enough about the case to ID Roxanned Druck after it was posted here, but not enough to figure out Lee Rohn is a woman.

I have a feeling Roger is a Deceiver reader also. (Welcome, Roger!)

The Enquirer, meanwhile, says it traced Hunter to a house in St. Croix owned by a lawyer named Lee Rohn, whom it calls a close friend of Edwards. But Rohn’s most recent political contribution went to Barack Obama. He gave the presumptive Democratic nominee $1,300 on Feb. 4, 2008, just four days after Edwards left the race and three weeks before Hunter had her baby.

Rohn did donate $2,300 to Edwards’ primary run last September. He also gave Obama $1,000 during the summer of ’07 for his primary campaign.

However, Friedman hates Jan Wenner with a passion, so I’ll excuse him.

I agree with what you said about pols. The best leaders are the volunteers I know who show up every month for local Coalition meetings and get things done from the grass-roots level. The biggest recognition they get is a cheap award at a banquet but they do it for their families and for the satisfaction they get from making things happen for the people in their communities.
