Hayden Panettiere: Dad Beating Mom Was ‘Absolutely Nothing’

We didn’t report on the recent claims that Hayden Panettiere’s dad beat her mom during a drunken argument because that was a pretty sucky situation all around. We have standards.

But Hayden now seems to be a little delusional about what happened. She told Extra:

“That personal stuff was absolutely nothing. It was blown way out of proportion by a sheriff who wanted his fifteen minutes of fame. But my family is wonderful — they are so very happy. So we’re all great!”

Now I don’t expect her to break down on the red carpet and weep about how her family is currently outpacing the Lohans in the race for Worst Hollywood Parents.

But it seems dishonest to pretend that her dad punching her mom in the face for “disrespecting” him is totally happy family behavior. He is currently facing a felony count of domestic violence. Why dismiss that as “absolutely nothing”?

Pictured here is Hayden surrounded by and draped with dead cows. Just because.

Dead cows aren’t whales! It’s totally okay to cover yourself in leather, as long no whales were hurt in the process. DUHH

I think we can safely call it “Denial”…

On the other side, look at all those leather products…

I think it’s wrong of her to minimize domestic abuse in this way, but at the same time, I can imagine that she doesn’t want to draw more media attention to the situation, which if true, would score points with me simply because she’s not being a Brooke Hogan about it.

It doesn’t give her a pass on only saving the cute animals.

She could have said it was a private matter, or that she felt it was being misinterpreted, without saying it was “nothing” when it’s pretty clear something happened. Celebs need to learn the fine art of saying less and thus staying honest. I like how she makes it seem like the Sheriff is the bad guy for this…not the man who punched his wife in the face. But that’s family dynamics for you.

If she considers her mom and dad fighting like that “not a big deal” I wonder what a “big deal” would be to her.

How old is Hayden? Give me a moment and I will look…..
Ok, she was born when I graduated high school. Great. So she she just turned 19. Probably not the brightest. Remember how smart and media savvy you were at 19?
I agree that domestic violence should never be minimized but she probably wanted to keep the episode somewhat private and spoke in a way that wasn’t quite scripted by her publicist.
As for the leather, I agree, leather isn’t made of whale so she can compartmentalize it and say that hocking bags for Dooney and Burke isn’t such a bad things. Really, I’ve seen her bag and it is super cute. If I could afford it, I would buy one.

It’s probably no big deal to her because she’s seen worse :O.

You know.. if domestic violence should never be minimized then how come we bring it up only when some celebrity couple gets in it? Fact is, if it wasn’t for the clever foresight of her parents none of us would even sit here talking about it. Go daddy!

  9. 9 Phoenix Aug 26th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

vitaminkid- um, yeah people do talk about domestic violence when celebrity couples aren’t getting into it…just not on celebrity watching sites.

The sheriff won’t get fifteen minutes of fame from this. (It’s cute she thinks she’s a big enough star for that.) He might get, like, three minutes. If it’s a slow day. And nobody announces a pregnancy.

It’s not uncommon for children of abusive parents to minimize the violence. Part of the cycle is keeping it a secret outside of the home. Everybody in the abusive family plays a role and it appears that part of Hayden’s role is to protect the secret. Unfortunately I know a little bit about domestic violence and have spent some years learning how to break the cycle. The behaviours of the abused and the abuser aren’t logical from what would be a “normal” perspective. I actually feel bad for Hayden and her mom. I hope they can both find some relief.

yeah really, my dad beating my mom is totally nooooothing! i don’t know, i just can’t like this chick. i just can’t! i saw an ad in a magazine for dooney and bourke the other day and i guess she’s their spokesperson. yeah she’s surrounded by leather bags like you said. so no saving the cows? just the whales?

There’s really no hypocrisy in being an anti-whaling activist and enjoying leather. The whaling industry is up beyond compare and is hunting a species to extinction for the enjoyment of a dwindling market. I don’t think protesting that really compares to buying a designer purse - unless cows are endangered, I guess.

  14. 14 Simon Scowl Aug 27th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

    Plus, whales are totally cuter!

  15. 15 Eve Aug 27th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Perhaps the issue is not so much Hayden’s leather-loving hypocrisy, but PETA’s continued idiocy. Didn’t they name her one of the Sexiest Vegetarians of 2008 or somesuch load of (suffering) cow dung?

  16. 16 Suzanne Aug 27th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Why didn’t she say that her family prefer to keep private matters private no matter what has been leaked to gossip columns. Regardless of who you are (public or celebrity) you should have a right not to have to explain situations to people you don’t wish too.

  17. 17 Simon Scowl Aug 27th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Then why is she explaining it to Extra?

  18. 18 Jrod Aug 28th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

What if it was nothing? Like they were upset and fighting and she was so mad she called the police? Hayden doesn’t want to implicate anyone, so she just says it is nothign and stays mum.

Just saying, My Aunt did that once while she was babysitting me. Her Boyfriend came home hammered and they had a fight, and she called the cops and said he hit her even though it wasn’t true. She was only like 18 though, and she turned into a winner! (ok, maybe not a winner…)

  19. 19 Phoenix Aug 28th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Jrod- well, there is the issue of the “visible mark” on the mother’s face in the police report…

Hmmm, I guess punching moms are OK but not killing dolphins.
