Another Big Difference Between the Edwards Story and the Palin Story

The McCain campaign is promising threatening legal action against the National Enquirer for their claim that Palin had an affair.

(Image courtesy of Mark Pasetsky’s Cover Awards)

Here’s the McCain statement:

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it…”

“Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” said Schmidt.

“Legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”

So that’s a bit of a brain-teaser. The Enquirer has newfound clout among the “legit” press because they were right about the Edwards story. But one of the ways you could tell they were right was that, in a story chock-full of trial lawyers, not one of them threatened to sue. (Well, except Lee Rohn, I think. Anybody know if anything became of that?)

Also, Edwards has never specifically denied any of the Enquirer stories. He said stuff like, “No comment, those rags are just full of trash.” And that was a day or two later, when somebody finally worked up the courage to mention it to him.

Whereas this is a forceful, specific, not to mention immediate denial. McCain isn’t putting Palin on an express private-jet flight to St. Croix. He’s vowing to fight. I’d say something like, “This could get interesting,” but is there any doubt?

Oh, and I think she’s giving a speech tonight? Let me double-check on that…

That’s my snap judgment, at least, without having read the Enquirer story yet. Now grab your torches and pitchforks, kids, and let’s hit the comments!

9/6 Update: You can read the entire text of the story here. In my opinion it does not rise to the level of well-sourced factual detail in their Edwards stories, but I’m sure somebody will have a problem with that. My theory: The Enquirer got cocky.

I find it very disheartening that every time someone shows a reasoned, independent course of thought about this story that doesn’t rely simply on party distinctions, they are branded as hateful and…republican.

Anyone else find it sad how many Democrats apparently think that logic and individual opinion couldn’t possibly come from someone in their own party? That only republicans wouldn’t give a hoot about something to do with republicans?

Just judging from the comments I’ve seen on here, but geez guys there are Democrats who don’t think this is such a freaking deal.

Up here in Canada I’m beginning to think that the media tends to lean a certain way when it suits them. (It’s happening here with our own pre-election ramp-up) The news here seems to show the (US) Republicans as the only party with dirt on their hands. Ultimately, a politicians’ private life doesn’t speak to how he/she can run a country. Albeit, that doesn’t mean they aren’t hypocritical, but then who really isn’t(?) I know I am.

  3. 3 Scott F. Sep 3rd, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Seriously, regardless of where you stand on the issues, can’t people see how incredibly stupid it is for Democrats to be focusing on some of these issues? Rule number one in campaigning for public office is the ‘glass houses’ rule - because drawing attention to an area where you can be criticized is obviously a bad move.

A lot of Clinton supporters were pissed off at what was perceived to be (justified or not) a sexist assault on her by Obama’s campaign. So hearing Democratic pundits tell a woman she has too many kids to run for office, or that she should stay home and ‘get her house in order’, is NOT the best way to bring those voters back into the fold right now.

Bringing up her history with a ‘church that preaches about converting Jews to Christians and is anti-Semitic.’ Is a REALLY bad idea when the Obama campaign has just now managed to shift some focus away from his history with an equally racist and arguably more psychotic, conspiracy-filled church.

Attacking Palin’s experience is just as bad an idea - because if we’re gonna start comparing experience balance sheets, McCain has about 3 decades more than Obama. Obama, who wants to be Commander in Chief, but was never in the service in any capacity. Something that seemed to be a rather large point of contention by Democrats when Kerry was running for office, no? That Kerry had REAL combat experience, and Bush flew planes in the States? Funny how that’s not an issue with Obama.

But yeah, other than all that, they’ve been dealing with the Palin thing swimmingly, without a hint of bias or sexism.

I’m glad someone’s finally sticking up for Sarah Palin and fighting for her, even if it’s her own campaign! It’s about time someone finally did, cause these stories about her are just plain silly. It’s so funny how certain issues can be selective - we’re only going to be feminists when it suits us, or when it suits our candidate. Sure, women should be just as equal as men! They can have it all - run companies and still have babies! They should have all the same opportunities as men: if they’re qualified for a job, they should have just as much of a shot at it!
Unless that woman is a Republican, then she should just shut her trap, put on an apron, and get back in the kitchen.
    Sheesh.

John Edwards scandal is poised to erupt again next week with the Enquirer’s release of the names of the six attorneys that helped cover up the John Edwards lovechild scandal.

Will John O’Quinn (Rielle Hunter’s daughter middle name is Quinn) be on the list?

Will both campaign finance and tort (lawsuit) reform be a topic EITHER party is willing to even talk about?

  11. 11 jewels Sep 3rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I’m not Republican (not that there’s anything wrong with that) just that the important issues of the day are being over-shadowed by a voyeuristic view of someone’s personal life. People want to separate Church and State, so why not State and “what-goes-on-behind-closed-doors” (?)

(Maybe my new Avatar should be…”Devil’s Advocate”)

  12. 12 Tyland Sep 3rd, 2008 at 9:53 pm

I really wish you people stop blaming Obama and bring him into this. Do you really think he is that stupid to have his hands in on this after the way people percieved Hillary being treated unfairly by the media. He said families are off limits. I am a Republican but come on with the stupid attacking Obama everytime the media or some rags brings up something on Palin. These same rags and this same media went after Obama (looping Wright for about a month, and linking him to Ayers who committed acts when he was eight years old). Damn get a grip. You people are making it hard for me to keep supporting Republicans. I am sick of the shifting blame. McCain should have vetted her properly or picked a known quantity.

  13. 13 Lee Stranahan Sep 4th, 2008 at 1:52 am

I think the McCain campaign learned something from the Edwards case - hit back hard. With only 62 days until the election, there’s not much time for a suit to be resolved.

    I agree with Simon - it’s interesting…

  14. 14 SP Sep 4th, 2008 at 3:54 am

There’s a big difference between ‘threatening’ a lawsuit & filing papers. I see no difference between this and Edwards, other than that she has more Victim Appeal.

  15. 15 Simon Scowl Sep 4th, 2008 at 4:04 am

    Guess we’ll see!

  16. 16 Edith Ann Sep 4th, 2008 at 7:15 am

I think her problem is with the Alaskan republicans, her family and the neighbors she has in Wisalla.(sp) The only Dem. in this appears to be the one on the bipartisian Ethics panel. In fact except for this, one Dem., it appears the whole state of Alaska are republicans or seccessionists. Someone needs to look into the McCain campaign’s interference of this investigation. When will people get tired of being lied to and misled by politicians and let them know they work for us?

When will politicians learn that they leave a trail that anyone can follow. They are U-tubed, phone cameraed, and those e-mails. How stupid can people be to put some of these comments on a state e-mail. When will those over 40 realize these things last forever and will be used against you. Think before you e-mail.

It’s one thing to change your mind. It’s another to flat out lie or blow with the wind, which is more often the case that not. When you change your mind it should be because of new information. Lying or blowing with the wind is usually expedient.

  17. 17 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 4th, 2008 at 8:03 am

“…there’s not much time for a suit to be resolved.”

True, but that’s beside the point. Initiating legal action is the point.

“I see no difference between this and Edwards,…” Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

  18. 18 Ruby Sep 4th, 2008 at 8:52 am

Forget the Palin gal! I want to know about Shannen Doherty terrorizing the “90210″ crew. Enquiring minds want to know.

  19. 19 Aleric Sep 4th, 2008 at 9:09 am

Well I am a Republican and I do think the Obama campaign if not him directly then people in his camp are behind some of the attacks against Sarah Palin, after all he has Joe Bidenn in his camp. This is a man who has 30 years of deciet in his resume and is never brought to task for his skeletons.

If the Democrats in the media want to put Palin and McCain in the white house they had better stop with the attacks on Palin. More people are reacting in sympathy towards her than in anger.

  20. 20 Jrod Sep 4th, 2008 at 9:26 am

I think it was a calculated risk…John McCain’s could have controlled this issue out the gate, but let the media and Democrats break the story…on purpose. you give anyone enough rope, they’ll hang themselves. Attacking a woman about her children over and over again is USUALLY not a way to win over the public. Democrats will attack anything, and never expect the backlash that eventually comes…

  21. 21 Austin Sep 4th, 2008 at 9:34 am

Frankly, all this hatred spewing forth from the power-brokers and (rightly called by you at Deceiever!) hypcrites of the media – not to mention the idiotic wing-nuts at the Kos, also notable hypocrites – is making me think that there’s something about Palin that these cats are seriously afraid of. It’s making me do the unthinkable. I’m considering voting Republican.

Just to piss these guys off.

  22. 22 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 4th, 2008 at 9:55 am

Note the difference in responses to ’scandal’ by Edwards and Palin:

Edwards: confess 1% of the truth, then insert tail between legs and disappear into obscurity forever.

Palin: “I’ll sue your ass, suckwad. Then I’ll burn down your house and shoot your dog.”

  23. 23 PJ Sep 4th, 2008 at 10:04 am

A politican having an affair? That’s UNHEARD of.

Santa, please. I’ve been a good girl all year. Please a John Edwards/Sarah Palin affair. She can run her fingers through his awesome hair. He can polish her Velma glasses. Babies everywhere.

  25. 25 DogSniff Sep 4th, 2008 at 10:16 am

The big difference between the Edwards/Palin stories? Edwards is no longer involved in public politics and Palin may be VP in 60 days…

  26. 26 wisegirl Sep 4th, 2008 at 10:29 am

The republicans are the KING of being very mean-spirited and cut-throat remarks,
While the Democrat party showed class and dignity. Just because the media is digging into the life of Palin, Bush and others, why cry foul now? They (republicans) comes off as so self-righteous, wanting people to be soooooooooooo
understanding of their family problems but want to hold other people to a much higher standards. I am a christian, but demeaning others is not what being a christian to me.
Barack\Biden will get my vote because they seem to really care about all people.
    God Bless!!

If she did cheat, I’ll be REALLY unhappy. But my instincts tell me it’s unlikely - there are too many pols in Alaska who got clobbered by her, it all smacks of payback.

  29. 29 biscuit Sep 4th, 2008 at 11:09 am

Is the cover all we’ve seen? I’d bet it’s not HER affair, though the coverline tantalizingly leads us to believe it is (and will make lots of people buy one, which is its purpose).

It’s probably about her sister or something. Has there been a specific allegation from the NE that she cheated? No lawsuit, I bet. No story, I bet.

  30. 30 Simon Scowl Sep 4th, 2008 at 11:36 am

Edwards is no longer involved in public politics

Not true at the time it came out. And his money guy is still very involved.

  31. 31 John Sep 4th, 2008 at 11:48 am

Well some bitch in Alaska has already admitted she lied about Palin being a member of the AIP so what won’t they lie about?

  32. 32 Lobo Sep 4th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Whoever thinks Obama did not authorize these scandalous attacks is a certifiable moron.

  33. 33 Aleric Sep 4th, 2008 at 12:26 pm

Depends on who is willing to pay enough money or grant favors to make a story out of it.

  34. 34 Mike Bratton Sep 4th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Let’s be candid: Liberals will lie about anything, because in the liberal (Democrat) worldview, the ends really do justify the means. And when your end is to increase your own personal power and your own party’s power, what’s a little plagiarism, Joe? A little infanticide, Barack? A little character assassination, whoever’s behind the Enquirer story?

Even the most visually-impaired squirrel occasionally finds an acorn. And even the Enquirer occasionally gets a real news story right. Though they got the Edwards/Hunter scandal right, please don’t attribute to that paper some sort of overarching credibility.

    –Mike

  35. 35 phoenix Sep 4th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

    Mike Bratton-

You seriously think only Democrats lie? That for Republicans the ends never justify the means? Regardless of party, we’re talking about politicians here. There’s a lot of foul stuff on both sides. Any time anybody, of any party, says that ONE of the two parties is always lying and the other isn’t… that’s pretty obviously false.

NE, (or is it another Tab?), routinely report on Obama’s “Love Child” and other misdoings on the cover. No traction there either - yet.

    The Game Rules:

Agree the lawsuit threat is a positive for her case, as the NE rarely wins these outright - at least in public awareness. (Maybe they just have “settlements”?). But it could force her to acknowledge there was yet another (ridiculous) rumor to begin with.

If it really happened, suitably long enough ago - and she confesses and explains it when directly confronted with it - she might still get a pass - if the sustained soap opera atmosphere doesn’t do her in.

If the affair is current and ongoing, (pretty darn unlikely)she should just slink away, (like most GOPer’s have done in these sex situations when compared to Dems).

If instead she denies, lies, connives, covers-up and otherwise insults our intelligence a la Edwards - Then she should get the very big boot back up North with a hardy Good Riddance (no 1st Class Air Baron tickets, either). And McCain will be vetting additional retirement villas.

If it’s proven false, she wins more media-bashing voter sympathy and the NE is back to Square One, credibility-wise. This is a much bigger toss of the dice for them.

  38. 38 Simon Scowl Sep 4th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I’m just wondering if the Cry Wolf syndrome will kick in. If you keep throwing this stuff at her and none of it sticks…

  39. 39 daliscar Sep 4th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

She is strongly reminiscent of “Teflon Ron” in many ways. If she survives all this, she could become to the Libs what the Slick Juggernaut was to the Right.

  40. 40 wisegirl Sep 4th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

….just common sense…8 years under the republican administration, the country as a whole is deeper in debt, homes all over the US are in foreclosure. Cheney and Bush have large investments in the oil companies, Halliburton major investor. sorry, you naive folks, they sold you all of false bill of lies and you are taking the bait, Again! They’re taking money from folks who have retirement funds, 401K plan etc…to help fund the war.
robbing the country blind….GET REAL…where is the money going?….why is the country in such economic despair….
Every thing has increased substantially…GAS!….FOOD!….ENERGY!….EDUCATION!…..even Movie tickets…
but if you cannot think for yourself….and realize the days we are living in and wake up..then oh well….

Those who support the war should be the VERY FIRST in Line on the battlefielg and encourage their loves ones to go and FIGHT and spill their blood for oil.

  41. 41 JD Sep 5th, 2008 at 4:04 am

With a handle like Wisegirl how can you be so um-unwise? Yes 8 years with a republican potus yes the market isn’t in full bull run mode have you asked why or did you stop your investigation with Bush is the prez that’s why life sucks? Life is unfair no matter who the president is but if you actually looked at economic numbers instead of letting others tell them to you. You just might realize life aint all that bad. Unemployment under Clinton at the end of 1992 his first year as president was at 7.3% it was heralded as a 30 year low throughout his 8 years it dropped slightly and finished at 5.1% there were even years when it was in the high 4% range. President Bush took over the low unemployment and kept in the mid 4% range until the mid 2007 when the housing market started too weaken it stands now at 5.7% with all of the problems you mention. Now lets look a recent problems housing market was it Bush that told people to buy houses they could not afford? was it Bush who told lenders to loan money to people who otherwise could not qualify for a loan? What about the price of food? you complain about Bush’s ties to oil and fail to realize that one reason food prices have shot up is because 1/3 of the corn crop is being used as fuel instead of feed you see corn not only goes into around 3000 different types of products it also goes to feed cattle, pigs, chickens when the price of feed goes up the market price of those commodities rises as well. Now I will admit that Bush signed the law into effect that allowed for the subsidizing of ethanol as fuel but it wasn’t his party that was pushing the bill. As far as gas prices Nancy Pelosie upon taking command of congress in 2006 when gas prices were around $2.00/gal said she was going to do something about it. Isn’t it congress who writes the laws? what laws has she or any other democrat written to help you and me? She has argued against drilling for more oil but the mere statement that drilling should occur by president Bush pushed oil prices down 11% in two days and in the several weeks since his announcement the price of oil has dropped almost 25% but sure blame Bush. An energy who block any attempt to build new power generating stations? AND last but not least the war in Iraq first it was CLINTON who signed the Iraqi Liberation Act PL105-338 in 1998 it was the U.N. that signed resolution 668 in 2002 and Both houses of congress passed pl 105-235 in 2002 authorizing the use of military force in Iraq pl 105-235 passed with 68% and 77% support so if you don’t like the war there is plenty of blame to spread around. And as for this line “Those who support the war should be the VERY FIRST in Line on the battlefielg and encourage their loves ones to go and FIGHT and spill their blood for oil.” I have two uncles and four cousins that have all spent time in Iraq or Afghanistan those two uncles followed my father into Vietnam none of them were drafted as for myself I work in law enforcement and I put my life on the line everyday to defend people like yourself from those who would do you harm. It’s obvious to me you don’t understand someone who would put their country ahead of themselves but I sleep well at night knowing that someone has got my back just like I’ve got theirs. When you stop acting like a whiny teenager and start to act like a grown up with a sense of duty you will begin to understand why someone would join the army or police force, not to be the one holding the gun but to be protecting the ones who don’t.

  42. 42 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 5th, 2008 at 8:49 am

“Every thing has increased substantially…GAS!….FOOD!….ENERGY!….EDUCATION!…..even Movie tickets…”

Yeah, thanks for the ‘heads-up’, wisegrrl. Mostly thanks to democrat obstructionists beholden to the sierra club who won’t let anyone develop new energy sources, can’t build a nuclear power plant, can’t build a new refinery, can’t develop shale. And yet they decry our dependence on foreign oil?!? What the hell do they expect us to do? Strap a solar panel our ass and point it at the sun?

“…but if you cannot think for yourself…” OK yeah, I’ll let think for me.

“Those who support the war should be the VERY FIRST in Line on the battlefielg[sic] and encourage their loves ones to go and FIGHT and spill their blood for oil.”

Thanks. We are and we do. Oh, and dont’t worry about that whole freedom & democracy thing. We’ve got your whiney, ungratedful ass covered (as usual).

BIG DILEMMA: OPRAH BALKS AT HOSTING SARAH PALIN; STAFF DIVIDED… Oprah Winfrey may have introduced Democrat Barack Obama to the women of America — but the talkshow queen is not rushing to embrace the first woman on a Republican presidential ticket!

Oprah’s staff is sharply divided on the merits of booking Sarah Palin, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

“Half of her staff really wants Sarah Palin on,” an insider explains. “Oprah’s website is getting tons of requests to put her on, but Oprah and a couple of her top people are adamantly against it because of Obama.”

One executive close to Winfrey is warning any Palin ban could ignite a dramatic backlash!

It is not clear if Oprah has softened her position after watching Palin’s historic convention speech.

Last year, Winfrey blocked an appearance by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, timed to a promotional tour of his autobiography.

Oprah and executive producer Sheri Salata, who has contributed thousands of dollars to Obama’s campaign, refused requests for comment.

Thank you JD for that truly thought out statement.

I am amazed at how many people have forgotten the run up to the war in Iraq or that they blame the President instead of the Congress for the energy problem we have today (and if I am not mistaken it is the Democrat’s who control the Congress….not that I trust the Republicans’s, they blew their chance as well…neither party has done squat).

Right on JD. Wisegirl sounds like a pathetic obama campaing operative or supporter. Got news for you honey - Bush didn’t make anyone poor. If you want to believe idiotic things and think the government has magical powers to save you then you will remain poor and oppressed forever. Get a brain and get a life and don’t wait for Barack to save you. He can’t and won’t. For those who think the government giving you money is a replacement for a job…. well you’ll get what you deserve. It’ll feel great till the money is gone. And then you’ll pay it back ten times over in inflation. You see… when the government wants money from me and my business I just get it from my customers and fire employees that I can no longer afford and perhaps reduce the qty or quality of the service Im providing. Anyone feel like being cute with business owners now?

Read the Equirer article. Also read the report on Troopergate on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It looks to me that Mike Wooten, the trooper in question cheated on his wife, with his first wife. And his messy divorce has alienated him from his wife’s family which included the Governor of Alaska, her father and her husband.

The unnamed source of the Enquirer article is clearly identified as an “enemy” of Sarah Palin. Other items leads one to believe that the “enemy source” is a friend or relative, or even Mike Wooten himself. The allegations, in my opinion, are not very believable, and appear to be easily verifiable.

The big charge is that Sarah had an affair, and this ruined a business partnership and long time friendship with Todd. As Governor, she had to release a lot of financial data on her and Todd’s businesses. Any partnerships should be in those documents, and former business partners easily tracked down. Can some reporter go through those reports, check his former business partners? Or at least name them?

    Check for when partnerships changed.

The source claims that Todd is keeping quiet on the subject. Which is convienent and what I call “UFO Epistemology” Its how denial of something can be used to proof that some charge is true. “Well of course he says it did not happen. That is because he is covering up.” It discredits a defense, without having to produce any evidence.

Another charge is that Sarah wanted to keep Bristol’s pregnancy a secret, to the point of attempting to arraign a wedding prior to the rollout Friday Morning. That Bristol and her mother fought, and the wedding did not take place.

My first thought was the unprecedented nature of this. Imagine that, a mother fighting with her 17 year old daughter. That has never happened in all of human history!

Second, it is unclear that even if the charge is true, what Sarah’s motivation be. Did you see the crap Bristol was put through in this past week? Wouldn’t you try to blunt things by moving their wedding date up? If you knew that was coming, wouldn’t you try to lessen it somewhat? What mother wouldn’t?

The timing is a bit rough to reconcile. I got the impression that nobody knew she had been picked before Friday, with the possible exception of the Governor herself. It had not leaked in the news, which leads me to believe the time between the notification and the rally in Ohio was too brief to even think of a wedding.

At 5 months at this late date, any wedding at this late date would make things too obvious.

It is also reported that Bristol disagreed, and the two fought. It appears that Bristol won that fight. There was no hurried wedding, and Sarah Barracuda lost the fight to her 17 year old daughter. It does not appear that the fight got too physical, and from watching her on TV, I have doubt she loses too many fights.

And lastly, the ‘enemy source’ states that:”Sarah has a hard time controlling [Bristol],” said the source. “She is so busy with her political career that is seems she often doesn’t have time for Bristol.” In other words, this source is suggesting that Sarah Barracuda should just stay home with the kids.

The Enquirer will not be sued, because in a literal sense, the story is true. Not necessarily the allegations in the story. The allegations were not investigated, because the allegations were not the story. The fact someone was spreading these stories was the story, the fact that a friend, relative or Mike Wooten himself was making these allegations is the story. A good libel defense is the truth, and the fact that someone is saying these things about Sarah, no matter how unbelievable, improbable, or silly, is the story. Not whether those allegations were true or not.

One more comment on “Wisegirl’s” superior cognitive skills. When you cite republicans as being the KING of mean-spiritedness and cut-throat remarks, can you please give one such remark as an example of what you’re talking about?

As for holding others to higher standards, I think it’s more accurate to say that republicans recognize that there should at least be a “standard”, whereas democrats behave as if an enlightened society is one where everyone is free to define for themselves their own personal standard of behavior. “Whatever’s your bag, man, that’s groovy”. No need to pass judgment on anyone else.

As a Christian, surely you believe there is indeed a single standard of behavior that applies to all of us, and as imperfect beings, both republican and democrat, we’ll never succeed in living up to without many missteps, sometimes small, sometimes big. The question is which political party you believe better promotes policies that steer our actions in the direction of that common standard of behavior. Is there any question which party represents which point of view?

I think you confuse “self-righteousness” with a desire to guide society’s behavior in the direction of doing the right thing, while also recognizing that the people of which it is comprised will ever be perfect when left entirely to our own devices. As a Christian, surely you can see this?

Lastly, you state that Obama/Biden “seem to really care about people”. Are you saying that McCain/Palin don’t really care about people? No doubt they equally “care about people”. But is this all you’re going base your vote on, because they “really seem to care about people”? I really care about people too, and I’m sure you do as well, but that alone doesn’t make us qualified to become president.

Maybe you need to put that wise head of yours to better use over the next 2 months.

This is getting boring. It doesn’t sound any different from what I have listened to for the last 16 yrs. Which ever side is getting clobbered today uses the same excuses the other side will use tomorrow when they get caught. You can go as far back as Nixon and all the stories are the same just different names. This is why you want a fee country with free speech and religion. For as many of us as there are, there are that many opinions. Your idea of moral and mine are different. Greed is immoral and this country is feeding and killing for it. You may think only sex is immoral. I’d rather be a “tax and spend” (for people) progressive than a borrow and give to my buddies consertive. I make my own best choices for me, you make yours. If this concept of freedom, ie. people having their own opinons, is interfered with in any way Democracy is over.

For those who aren’t aware of the latest in the alleged affair and the reason why the guy wanted his divorce records sealed, check out The Smoking Gun. Seems like he and his 11 year son are being inundated by the media because his addresses are in the paperwork and the reason he gave as wanting them it sealed was to prevent harassment by the media. The divorced papers are still available, 98 pages of them, so if you want to waste your time, go check them out, but The Smoking Gun says the only time the Palins are mentioned is in connection with shared property (a cabin). Oh well, another juicy story down the drain.

  57. 57 daliscar Sep 6th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

The sealed divorce thing is cleared up at Smokinggun - the guy was tired of the media calling him, nothing in it about Palin cheating. Not mentioned in Troopergate - the guy was using his taser on his stepson and drinking on patrol and should have been fired before.

News flash: JACK DOYLE IS A MOO-RON.

  60. 60 john Sep 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Palin was the result of a 1 week vetting by McCaion. Regardless if she turns out to be a ok selection. McCains wild, last minutes select puts his selection is doubt. Is this how he will make decisions?

  61. 61 daliscar Sep 7th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

My co-worker, a sort of moderate GOP Hillary supporter, was very distressed with Palin’s selection.

While she was taking some comfort from the current “Troopergate” story, I asked if she remembered Clinton’s “Troopergate,” or more pertinent to Hillary, “Travelgate.” She didn’t really, and thought Hillary was innocent (not quite, according to wiki). Besides, she said, all the particulars weren’t interesting or sexy enough.

This is also how Palin’s Troopergate will play out. All the dull, wonkish allegations of administrative mis-doings will blur in the minds of her supporters after they hear the tertiary facts: the guy was drinking on the job, threatened her family, and tasered the stepkid.

That’s all that’s going to stick in many minds - especially mom’s - and all they need to know to justify what Palin allegedly did to remedy the situation.

The Clintons’ long mastered this - up until all that memorably sexy, cigar stuff…

  62. 62 Jamie Sep 8th, 2008 at 4:12 am

Where’d you hear that, john? Because I heard the opposite: that McCain had people in Alaska back in May, at least - and there’s no reason initial vetting couldn’t have been done from wherever he was; she is after all a sitting governor with a public record.

It’s funny to watch McCain, at 72, being presented as the hothead, Obama, not yet 50, as the measured thinker. This despite the Obama campaign’s flailing over Palin and what Huckabee called “Obama’s Excellent European Adventure” (I’m no friend of Huckabee, but that was funny!), the several folk Obama has thrown under his rhetorical bus, and Obama’s poor performances when his lines weren’t written out. It’s a shame that he (or whoever) decided that he was ready for a Presidential run this year; he’s so young and with such a bright future in his party that he could easily have sat out this election and gained some actual experience, and run in a better position next time. Or, if Clinton had been the D candidate (likely), had won (possible), and had run again in 2012, two cycles from now.

  63. 63 Karen Sep 8th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

What kind of Aunt, especially a Aunt who happens to be a governor, would sit back and let their nephew be tazered? She did nothing to stop the abuse! This happened years ago, if in fact it really happened, and she did nothing until her sister decided to get divorced. And don’t tell me it happened and she just learned about it - I seriously doubt that line too.

    Enquirer story?

We need to send the blood hounds after the Enguirer reporters.
Those guys love dirt. They eat it,they sleep it and they spread it.
There is nothing like gossip and dirt and it brings shame to the name
of journalism. These guys have gone so low, they forgatten what journalism
    is all about.

    Sarah Palin…is human being.

She did not choose her relatives and neither can she fix them.

We cannot force our children make right choises. If they rebel and walk
the wrong path, the parents suffer deeply. If our relatives mess up their
lives,we stay out of it….that is only wisdom.

But,what Enquirer is doing is making money on someone’s misery and pain.
    How low can you go…

You call that journalism.Sorry.I have hard time with that.

Has American the beautitul been reduced to mean spirited people, who love
gossip and have no mercy on anyone.People who wish to destroy anyone who
walks on two feet.Is that politics is all about.

Sarah Palin wishes to make a difference in America.Let her have her change
and make a difference. The other candidates are much worser than her.GIVE HER
    a change.

She is human. Her family is not perfect.Maybe she is not perfect.
But,at least she is trying to make a difference.

Please,do have a cup of coffee and find other things to do
    than gossip.

Obession about Sarah Palin and her relatives is not
    gonna fix America.
