A Deceiver (political) “Time Out”

Is it just me, or is all the huffing and puffing about Sarah Palin’s alleged connections to Scientology and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto getting a little bit over the top?

(See? I just created two whole unsubstantiated rumors. I bet they both go viral on Daily Kos by tonight.)

My point, though, is this: Between the John Edwards babydaddy vigil, the anti-Palin buffoonery, and the continuing complaints about major media’s failure to cover connections between Barack Obama and Bill Ayers of “Weather Underground” terrorism fame, the U.S. presidential election cycle makes it really easy for a pop-culture blog about celebrity hypocrites to death-spiral into an all purpose political game of Whack-a-Mole.

And I’m just not down with that.

So I hereby declare — or I would do so properly if Firefox let me type in Olde English script — that Deceiver will observe a one-week moratorium on new posts about 2008 U.S. presidential candidates, beginning immediately.

You’re encouraged to keep stoking the fires by commenting in our most recent posts (I recommend this one, this one, this one, this one, and this one — in addition to this one). But the election is eight weeks away, and we’re taking at least one of them “off” to get back to our roots.

So dash away all: On Britney, on Paris, on K-Fed and LiLo! On Posh Spice, on Pammy, on Hayden and MiLo!

But before we set aside the whole “campaign ‘08″ thing until next Tuesday, I just have to share something that’s apparently gone viral (judged by the fact that I’ve gotten it from three people already): perhaps a better “McCain/Palin” button. This ticket would actually get my vote in an instant. Especially if the rest of the cast from “A Fish Called Wanda” were offered cabinet appointments in 2009.

It seems we have found the HMFIC. I agree whole-heartedly on the new McCain-Palin ticket. Rowr, Jamie Lee for Secretary of My Underpants.

  2. 2 llamasrule Sep 9th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

I had a dream one night that Eric Idle was shagging me and then suddenly it was Cleese. Wonder what THAT means? Aside from too much Spam, I mean.

Why, oh why did I call for a moratorium on politics before getting caught up on my Daily Show viewing?

  5. 5 GoMegDotCom Sep 10th, 2008 at 12:11 am

    OTTO FOR CABINET!!!

  6. 6 Queen Bee Sep 10th, 2008 at 12:15 am

I give 100% endorsement to Michael Palin. Here is a man who can kill a jerk with a steam roller. We need that kind of man in the White House. Someone who can say, “And now, for something completely different…..” and it will be something totally random and wacky! Awesome.

  7. 7 Austin Sep 10th, 2008 at 9:03 am

I read “Americans Respond Postively to Palin” as a headline in the BBC newswire the day after the other Palin got the nomination, and the first thing I thought was “Michael Palin’s doing a tour in the States? And I missed this!?!

  8. 8 llamasrule Sep 10th, 2008 at 10:51 am

@Bruce, I’m going to out-and-out call your LIE. Obama used an old, old phrase to talk about MCCAIN’s claim of wanting to change what has been going on in Washington for the past 8 years (when he voted with Bush 90% of the time). He was not talking about Sarah Palin. Were all of you wingnuts this upset when McCain used the EXACT SAME PHRASE about Hillary Clinton, calling her a pig? Of course not.

The media is lefty, my patooty! They crucified Obama about his pastor, but I have not heard one word in a mainstream media place about Palin being personally annointed by the laying on of hands by a minister who had rid an ENTIRE AFRICAN VILLAGE of witchcraft! Or that her entire family is baptized at age 12 into a church that trains their youth for an army to rid the world of evil and evil-doers, or that there is a faction of that church now praying night and day for McCain to win and then die, so she can rule the US for God. No, I can’t find the link, it was on HuffPo, so I can just say for 95% of you in this room “oh, what a fear-mongering pack of lies that must be. look how left THAT media is. booohoooohoooo”

How many of you have read the NYT article about her misappropriation of travel funds for her family, as if they were all state employees, or about her collecting per diems for staying at home and NOT traveling on state business, something like 93 times in 1 year? Well you probably won’t because the media is a bunch of right wing conservatives who will cover up anything bad about McCain or Palin, while crucifying Obama. Yeah, I disagreed with all of you. So What

  9. 9 D--- Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:00 am

Oversneer – it is too bad, of course you can always rescind this post and be a headliner on Deceiver yourself….

  10. 10 Maggie Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:02 am

Why couldn’t this moratorium have been called when the site was doing that ’round-the-clock, minute-by-minute boring ass John Edwards story?

  11. 11 Simon Scowl Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:43 am

Because nobody else was doing it. Thanks for understanding.

And llamasrule, thank you for that calm, rational explanation of the media’s glaring right-wing bias. I am now utterly convinced.

  12. 12 The Oversneer Sep 10th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

Well …. That plus we were still cutting our teeth on political commentary, and figuring out how to keep an effective mix of things going. Look, folks, nobody’s perfect. But we’re doing the best we can to keep y’all entertained, intrigued, and over-excited at the same time for the low, low price of zilch — without resorting to (*gasp*) naked video-blogging. And trust me: That’s not happening unless Mrs. Oversneer decides to take over for me. (She’s much better looking in the buff…)

  13. 13 Queen Bee Sep 10th, 2008 at 1:25 pm

I don’t know why you won’t report on the fact that Palin is a lumberjack and is ok. He works all night and sleeps all day. Here is a direct quote: “I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flowers, I put on women’s clothing, and hang around in bars” Isn’t that newsworthy? What about the Spanish inquisition? Because nobody expects that.

  14. 14 Edith Ann Sep 10th, 2008 at 1:34 pm

I agree with Maggie. When will you all get it. This isn’t a political blog. It’s a gossip column. I also agree with llamasrule.

  15. 15 llamasrule Sep 10th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Well Simon, you’re welcome. *grin* But it just goes to show that the left will scream loudly that the media is one way, and the right will scream that it is the other way, and BOTH will have examples to back it up. BTW, I stand by calling Bruce’s (if that is his real name–can he recite rule #7?) lie, a lie. Read the article. You can find statistics or examples to “PROVE” anything.

I am no more alarmed about Palin’s pastors or religion than I was about Obamas’, and Simon, no one needs to convince anyone that was a big media circus for quite a good while. I actually have left AND right beliefs and try to avoid falling for hyperbole and exaggeration. That’s not to say I won’t USE it, but believing all of it is another thing. As long as they don’t try to inject their personal beliefs into the law or running of the country, OK. But there is a sect of her religion praying for McCain to win and then die. Strange, but as far as I know, true. They are called Christian Reconstructionists and were featured in last year’s Jesus Camp brouhaha, training the young’uns to take over.

Actually you all have a good balance here right now, although I prefer the all-celebrity page. You can see why I avoid political sites. The emotions run too high, and the logic too low.

  16. 16 PJ Sep 10th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Guess Bruce didn’t know that McCain called Mitt Romney a pig too.

Guess Bruce didn’t read about Palin being chastised by the Judge in her sister’s child custody case either. That just broke in Newsweek.

  17. 17 phoenix Sep 10th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Well, it’s not like politics and gossip are that divorced these days…

Good on ya’, Deceiver. You could call an 8 week moratorium on it by me, but nobody asked…

  18. 18 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 10th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

“I actually have left AND right beliefs” = I’m actually a pretty grounded liberal, but I tell pollsters I’m an independent despite all indications to the contrary (except for that time I got stoned and voted for the Ralph Nader).

  19. 19 Pastafarian Sep 10th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

I’ll blog naked for you! Some people say I look like a cross between Dianna Ross, and that guy Vince that sells the Shamwows! And I look kick-ass naked.

  20. 20 PJ Sep 10th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

    I’m a Sarah Palin look-alike. Really. But I don’t wear lipstick.

  21. 21 LadyRVT Sep 10th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

llamasrule said and Edith Ann agreed: the media is a bunch of right wing conservatives who will cover up anything bad about McCain or Palin, while crucifying Obama.

You have GOT to be kidding me. I suggest for you a reality check. Go to this site for examples of your so-called right-wing media. Visit often, it is updated practically hourly, and there are years’ worth of archives.

If you haven’t noticed, most of the loudmouthed Hollywood moonbats and news talking heads (NBC, PMSNBC, ABC, CBS, PBS etc.) are nothing more than shills for the Liberal Democrats. Or don’t you remember recently-defrocked Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews getting “tingles up their legs” (oh, and ewwwww) for the O-Guy?

  22. 22 llamasrule Sep 10th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

LadyRVT, why don’t you go back and read my post @#15? The media does not favor anybody, it treats them all crappy.

And Snoop why don’t you get real! Do you actually think every single person falls neatly into one column or another and their are only 2 complete sets of values or beliefs? Maybe YOU are stoned. BUt not so fast, you are right about one thing. I have always voted Democrat, but I haven’t checked all the boxes in that column, if you know what I mean. I’m a registered Democrat but I believe abortion is killing and I am all for the death penalty. (For those who can’t figure it out, and I know you’re here, 1 life is innocent, 1 is not) I wish all 50 states had the death penalty. If they knew some of my other beliefs like about guns, they would probably “de-register” me.

But no, people like you, who have never even met me, like to assume you know everything about me and what I believe just because I disagree with you about something. People are so hostile when it comes to politics or religion. What exactly is so hard for you to believe about people having left and right leanings? WHAT!?!?!?!

  23. 23 Queen Bee Sep 10th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Didn’t the site put everyone on a political time out? Everyone, go sit in a corner or your room and think about your actions!

  24. 24 Alicia Sep 10th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

“As long as they don’t try to inject their personal beliefs into the law or running of the country, OK.”

    Exactly!

Wow, I have really enjoyed reading all of the comments on this post. I love seeing the different points of view, even though I don’t agree with all of them.

    LadyRVT: Right On!

Llamasrule: Seems like we have some important issues and ideas in common, although I am the dreaded conservative Republican! lol I agree with you, however. It is so insane how easily we get “blacklisted” because of what we choose to list as our political party. Once people hear Republican or Democrat… or Right wing or liberal… their minds and ears are closed. I really think we could come a long way in resolving many of our national problems if people would just grow up a bit and believe that we all have reasons for believing the way we do.

  25. 25 LadyRVT Sep 10th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

llamas, I was replying to your post at #8, as is quoted above.

Don’t say it unless you can back it up.

  26. 26 Bruce Sep 10th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

    llamasrule,

    1) McCain called Hillarys legislation a pig. Not Hillary.

    2) I’m giving Obama the beneifit of the doubt about the “old fish smell” — and assuming he meant McCain … because he might have been talking about Sarah Palin’s vagina.

Take a look at the video. It was planned. He rehearsed it. He paused for effect. The audience got who he was taling about.

But what makes it worse is that he said it in a way he could weasel out if it — which means he thinks we are idiots.

  27. 27 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 11th, 2008 at 8:34 am

    “I’m a Sarah Palin look-alike. Really. But I don’t wear lipstick.”

Let’s see that blog URL again, PJ.

  28. 28 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 11th, 2008 at 9:12 am

It really doesn’t matter if ‘lipstick on a pig’ was aimed at Palin or not. I am amazed however, that someone on Team Obama could give such unbelievably short-sighted and BAD political advice to use a phrase like that, knowing full-well how it would be interpreted.

I’d say the larger story is that someone in Obama’s inner circle is very politically inept.

  29. 29 Jrod Sep 11th, 2008 at 9:54 am

I love it how Llamas can get all high and mighty, start NEW Palin rumors, and no one cares because he can’t back them up. No Links? It didn’t happen.

You are right, the media is right down the middle. They lambasted Obama’s Pastor for shouting “God Damn America” and Obama pretending not to know about it. You say Sarah is part of a secret cult that worships a God who wants McCain to win and die so Palin will be president. Really? Or that really crazy claim of a minister performing an Exorcisim, umm, that is what they do…

What’s next, does her church symbolically break the body of Christ and cannibalize it while washing it down with his blood? Holy Shit!! Why won’t the media cover it?

  30. 30 llamasrule Sep 11th, 2008 at 11:24 am

Well Bruce, of course you are Right. That can only mean everyone else is wrong.

Read the article again or find one that covers it more completely, it is REALLY EASY TO DO, FOLKS, it’s called Google. He was referring to McCain’s new line about changing Washington and had not even mentioned her name. You, Bruce are the one not using facts, you are spreading biased innuendo as if it were truth.

Jrod, you obviously know next to nothing about organized religion. Only a few Catholics and fringe extremists perform “exorcisms” Once again, for those who haven’t heard of it, you can go to a search engine called Google and google christian reconstructionists or pray for McCain to die and your screen will fill up with those things you claim one person “just made up” out of thin air. And I never said it was a secret cult, so your pants are on fire, too. Don’t put words in my mouth. It has more basis than Bruce’s line of bull about stinky fish. Are you completely oblivious to metaphors in the English language, Bruce? Have you never in your entire life heard those phrases? Read ALL my comments. My POINT is that either side can “prove” their claims with bits or video or biased blog bits. Bruce is helping me to prove that point. And I still don’t think he can recite rule No. 7.

  31. 31 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 11th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

“Jrod, you obviously know next to nothing about organized religion.”

Llamasrule, you are the most beautiful, wonderful, best-est, silk-haired, firm-bosomed woman the world has ever known.

  32. 32 Bruce Sep 11th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

    llamasrule,

Calling “girls” pigs and accusing old men of being stinky is what 5th grade boys do.

They also slyly give someone the finger in class by scratching their nose, just like Obama did to Hillary.

“Watch the video right then. The presidential candidate raises his right hand to seemingly scratch his cheek.

He doesn’t use his whole hand though. Just one finger. Briefly. A couple of strokes.

He pauses. He smiles slyly as the crowd begins to mumble and then he tries, somewhat distracted, to continue his remarks, smiling as the buzz spreads through the crowd.

He’ll no doubt deny it later, but that mischievous smile seems to confirm plenty. And the crowd sure sees something.”

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/04/obamaflipsoffcl.html

Yup. The “mischievous smile” was there both times.

You don’t elect 5th graders as President.

  33. 33 llamasrule Sep 11th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

well Bruce, did ya know he (Obama) is a Muslim? Of course you do.

and Snoop, hope I don’t disappoint, but it is actually rather nappy and red, er, the hair, I mean.

  34. 34 llamasrule Sep 11th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

And why not elect 5th graders? We elected Bush.

  35. 35 PJ Sep 11th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    Snoop,

    http://www.pjmcilvaine.blosgspot.com

Or maybe I look like a pig?

But my mooserack is bigger than Palin’s.

  36. 36 Bruce Sep 12th, 2008 at 12:05 am

    llamasrule,

I take your change in subject matter to be an admission of defeat.

As for Obama being a Muslim … maybe, maybe not. I don’t see much difference between Farrahkan and Wright.

As for Bush, I think he did very well in defeting two Democrats and the worst living (at the time) mass murderer.

We are so lucky to not have had Kerry or Gore screwing things up. But then again, they were so dumb they lost to Bush.

But I do wonder what Obama was up to at Columbia. No one remembers him there.

    http://www.nysun.com/new-york/obamas-years-at-columbia-are-a-mystery/85015/

If I was a conspiracy nut, I’d guess he was being trained in Moscow.

I’d never say anything like that to a lady.

  39. 39 llamasrule Sep 12th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Bruce……sigh……I changed the subject because it was starting to feel like an exercise in nailing jello to a tree. And really, you would guess Moscow? Not Afghanistan?

Send this funny picture to any liberal who gets a bitchy-fit over the mention of Sarah Palin. It will shut them up for good, and probably send them to therapy.

You want hypocrisy? You want SICKNESS?

Why hasn’t the Obama Campaign opened up about their candidates alleged dressing of gerbils in lederhosen? There are also persistent whispers and rumors about ‘ferret-love’ in connection with Obama.

We’ve got a right to KNOW about these things yet the MSM won’t cover them! WHY? IS there a cover-up to protect Obama’s ‘intimate’ realtionships with rodents?

    Orion

  43. 43 Bruce Sep 12th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I see Obama is even dumber than I thought. Mocking McCain for not using email.

Couldn’t the Obama team spend 5 minutes on Google to find out McCain is disabled after being tortured?

    http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/12/why-cant-mccain-email/

McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside:

McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes.

Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.
After Vietnam, McCain had Ann Lawrence, a physical therapist, help him regain flexibility in his leg, which had been frozen in an extended position by a shattered knee. It was the only way he could hope to resume his career as a Navy flier, but Lawrence said the treatment, taken twice a week for six months, was excruciatingly painful.
”He endured it, he wouldn’t settle for less,” said Lawrence, who rejoiced with McCain when he passed the Navy physical. ”I have never seen such toughness and resolve.””

  50. 50 Simon Scowl Sep 14th, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Not that it sounds like it’ll matter to you, PJ, but you can read the text of the entire unedited Gibson/Palin interview here. It’s probably just an accident that they edited it to highlight seeming non sequiturs like “You can see Russia from Alaska,” removing it from the context of the conversation.

  51. 51 Bruce Sep 15th, 2008 at 12:15 am

Compare and contrast the softball questions asked Obama by Gibson:

    http://theanchoressonline.com/2008/09/12/side-by-side-gibson-questions-more/

    Obama interview:

How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?

How does it feel to “win”?

How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?

    Who will be your VP?

Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?

    Will you accept public finance?

What issues is your campaign about?

    Will you visit Iraq?

Will you debate McCain at a town hall?

What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton] speech?

    Palin interview:

Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking? Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?

Aren’t you conceited to be seeking this high level job?

    Questions about foreign policy
    -territorial integrity of Georgia
-allowing Georgia and Ukraine to be members of NATO
    -NATO treaty
    -Iranian nuclear threat
-what to do if Israel attacks Iran
    -Al Qaeda motivations
    -the Bush Doctrine
    -attacking terrorists harbored by Pakistan

Is America fighting a holy war? [misquoted Palin]

  52. 52 johnQpragmatist Sep 15th, 2008 at 1:53 am

Regarding the character assassination of Sarah Palin by the nonbiased, impartial, neutral media, welcome to a conservatives world. If all this stuff doesn’t make you believe there is a left wing bias in media, nothing will. It wasn’t always this way but starting in the early 90’s with Clinton, the medias true colors really showed through. For 8 years, mainstream media, i.e CNN, Newsweek, , the NY Times, Time, the 3 networks did nothing but run interference for Bill and Hillary,,allowing them to get away with murder. This is why I never read any of those things. I get my news from culling multiple sources over the net; that way I can make up my own damn mind.
I’ll give you just one example, the NY times published an op ed piece by Obama, ok, fine, but they refused to publish on op ed by Mccain. How is that remotely fair or unbiased?

Another thing that instantly made me a hater of the Democratic Party was their rush to become extremely left wing and extremely hypocritical. Yeah, I know republicans can be hypocrites too, but by and large they leave you alone and let you think on your own. Left wingers brought us political correctness which ostensibly is supposed to show sensitivity but in reality is simply a smokescreen which allows criticism to go one way only. You can be a democrat, left winger and get away with saying the most atrocious things about conservatives but god forbid a conservative criticize a favored group, i.e. African Americans, then of course conservatives are racists. Conservatives don’t practice PC.

I was a democrat but I didn’t leave the Democrat party, the party left me. Forever, I will be a disenfranchised “moderate” with conservative leanings. As long as the party is run by people like Hillary and John Edwards, I will never vote for them.

Now that I’m done ranting. I quit. Thank you and good night.

  53. 53 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 15th, 2008 at 8:41 am
