I didn’t even know MTV had a “Green Crusade.” But apparently (or at least according to TMZ), the media monolith that used to, well, actually play music videos is all green up in here.
The closest thing I could actually find to such a thing is this “MTV Switch” website. After you learn to resist the natural wrist-slashing urge from that satanic theme song, you’ll realize it’s just a lame eco-portal consisting mainly of lame automated links to Ecorazzi and Inhabitat.
Still, if MTV is on the environmental bandwagon, it’s going to have a hard time explaining how its latest Real World/Road Rules Challenge series, titled “The Island,” apparently turned a pristine part of Panama into a tropical garbage dump.
Recreational tree-climber Joe Maher and photographer Michael Drake caught ‘em in the act and cataloged the aftermath — not to mention the phony illusion of “wilderness” that you’re seeing on the trailer above:
A large plot of rainforest had been cleared, a pristine Caribbean beach had been trashed, and the creators had simply packed up and left. A family of what appeared to be “squatters” had already moved into one of the buildings left behind.
So just what have we had here?
First, a crowd of people that have shown no respect at all for local culture and custom, their attitude proclaiming the idea that “We are more important than any of you, don’t need you, and can do whatever we want. We don’t even have to acknowledge your presence.”
Second, a TV entity that wants to fool the world with a reality show supposedly taking place on a deserted and remote tropical island, that, in fact, has houses within several hundred yards on either side of their production site, and is on an island that is the hottest tourist spot in almost all of Panama.
Third, a group that leaves its trash on the side of the road with no regard for the natural beauty of the place.
Fourth, a group that will indiscriminately cut down whatever part of the forest is necessary in order to accommodate its objective, whether for construction or simply because it might be in the way.
Fifth, A group that set foot and conducted activities on a small and protected island without regard for the fact that the island has been declared “off-limits” to human visitation.
Sixth, their low-flying helicopter and airplane was a serious interruption of the tranquility of the forest. There are a lot of monkeys and birds inhabiting this part of the forest and every time the helicopter would come over, these local residents would become seriously agitated. I doubt that MTV knew, or cared, that these animals were there.
Seventh, they left without cleaning up the mess they had created.
Eighth, they did all of this with the obvious cooperation of the Policia Nacional.
Ninth, MTV’s behavior in this situation has been rampantly inconsistent with their self-proclaimed “MTV Green Crusade”. I sense a bit of hypocrisy and I question their commitment toward being “green”.
And I thought the only fake things on MTV were the boobs, the singing voices, and the rappers’ street-thug autobiographies. Silly me.

Sadly, this does not surprise me in the slightest. MTV, even when it was watchable, was always about style over substance – substance equating to whatever was cool for the next five minutes. The only shocker here is that they’ve jumped on the “green” bandwagon so late. The hypocrisy, however, is no big shock.
What’s a “music video”?
I want my MTV!
Don’t forget how MTV materializes the whole having big nice cars is what makes a Sweet 16 perfect then use their footprint to send those brats to places around the globe all expensed paid (they leave that little portion out….so much for trying to teach them a lesson).
When does anyone over the age of 14 and with a 100 IQ take MTV seriously? It’s like GLAAD taking “A Shot at Love” seriously.
It amazes me that people actually still watch “Reality” shows as if they are anything but real. Not to mention I stopped watching MTV 10 years ago when they stopped playing video’s and started focusing on whiny self centered and self indulgent air heads who think thier 10 minutes of fame is greater then people with real lives and jobs.
My thoughts on the trashing of the island in Panama, can’t they charge MTV with Eco Destruction with the World Court?
“the island has been declared “off-limits” to human visitation”
Then why they dint arrest them ?? law are for poor people not for rich corporations
I read that whole description, and most of it is second-hand information (though probably true).
their green campaign was called “break the addiction”

i guess they don’t have time to save the planet because they’re so busy trying to get obama elected.
what i find more interesting about the real world road rules challenge is that the “army” “drops supplies” for the game. in those army drops are the pieces of the raft the contestants use to complete the final challenge. is mtv really using the army to do this? if so, are our tax dollars paying for the unnecessary military aid drops or even more disturbing, is mtv paying the army to take part in a ridiculous televisions show? shouldn’t the army be focusing on national and international conflicts?
Because it’s COOL to say you’re environmentally friendly or “green”. The fact that you recycle 100 plastic water bottles per month, instead of buying a water filter, makes one an ‘un-green’ person.
I used to be a recreational tree climber too. When I was like, 12.
This just in: I’m watching “Next” (my roommate is addicted to it) and they have a lesbian couple who are NOT butch or stereotypical lesbian (they’re UGLY AND OLD?!?!)
Nice progress, MTV? I think? No, they’re just stupid.
Sorry, wrong show…I mean “Parental Control”
This is really sad and we need it to stop.

::hugs computer since he can’t yet hug a website:: There goes the Deceiver I know and love and not just because of the eco-hypocrisy but the last few posts.
But onto the topic. Piggybacking on Aleric, it amazes me that people actually still watch “MTV” (yes, quotes, when was the last time you saw a complete music video on there?), honestly you could only call the channel “green” if they were televising a special on the Incredible Hulk.
ugh, yet another reason for me to hate MTV. That poor island was hit by a tacky television tornado, so sad. Great scoop deceiver.
hmmm.. remember when MTV used to be about music?
I miss those days, katie.
Kinda off-topic, but since everyone here seems to remember the MTV I actually liked watching in the 80’s, I figured I would pass on some news my wife just told me about MTV. Apparently they’re canceling TRL, or Total Request Live, which was one of the last bastions of actual music videos on MTV. Granted, they only actually showed the whole video for like the top 3, but at least they could claim they were showing videos.
Wouldn’t want to have something like music interfere with Tila Tequila’s latest skank-fest. Especially on a network called MUSIC television.
I heard about that, Scott F., and while TRL sucked root, you’re right, it was the last hold out for actual music on Music Television. I miss the old days… 120 Minutes, Headbanger’s Ball, the Top 20… JJ Jackson is turning in his grave.
chronic i do too! MTV is such crap these days.. bleh.
And it’s only getting worse, katie!
