Britney Spears! Live and Uncensored! (My ears hurt.)

Before you press “play” on this video, you may want to consider the future health of your hearing. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

For context, this appears to be a live “board tape” of Britney Spears’ microphone track (without any digital processing) from a 2001 Las Vegas show, which HBO later aired as a broadcast special. Someone then synced up the audio, which was first leaked to a file-sharing fansite in Poland (don’t say we didn’t do our research…), with selected bits of the HBO video to make the finished product.

The final video illustrates a number of things, not the least of which is why big stars have backup singers, and how unrealistic it is for teens and ‘tweens to expect their favorite “singers” to dance and make any kind of noise worth paying to hear at the same time.

So without further ado, this is what Brit-Brit really sounds like when she’s on stage.

It’s her world, folks. We just live in it.

Apologies if you’ve seen this before, but I was entertained.

A hat tip goes to Deceiver reader Henrik, who wrote all the way from Sweden to share the video.

This post was beyond cruel. Yes, you did warn us that it was truly awful but, man, that was truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly, truly awful. Why must you terrorize your readers? What next? Another post of Madonna’s world eating vagina?

  2. 2 D--- Sep 16th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

I showed my kids this when it first came out so they would understand the difference between reality and hollywood production. I dare anyone to do jumping jacks and sing the national anthem…

  3. 3 jlynn Sep 16th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Hey, you don’t need to sing good as long as you’re all wet, right?

  4. 4 Snoop-Diggity-DANG-Dawg Sep 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

She may be a no-talent ho’. But she’s my no-talent ho, dammit.

  5. 5 Dayna Sep 16th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

wow, it’s crazy how I didn’t even think about the fact that to sing AND dance is nearly impossible. It’s funny, she sounds like me when i’m trying to work out and sing along to the radio at the same time :) This video is hilariously awful, though. Poor girl!

I think I realized this back when I was oh, say….whenever the hell her first album came out.’99? Yeah I was 10.

This is not shocking. Same thing with Hilary Duff and Katy Perry. Lucky bitches who happen (or had happened) to be screwing talented musicians (I use that usely because of Joel Madden).

Deceiver, you’re not the same anymore. What happened?

  7. 7 Rocko Sep 16th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I thought she sounded good at the beginning and progressively got worse, the low point being that second song in the video as she missed words, notes, etc. But when she’s not out of breath, she sounds like her albums I think.

    I lol’d… :-)

I don’t think that she can hear her monitors. Of course, chainsmoking probably doesn’t help.

I danced all through my childhood and into my twenties, and I’ve always been amazed at the people who assume you can do all that physical work AND be able to sing. Britney has always impressed me (up until the ‘crazy’ period, obviously) by her dancing; she makes something intensely physical look fluid and easy. As for the singing, while it’s bad it’s about how lousy I’d sound.

As for Madonna’s vagina, I really doubt she even has one left at this point. Have you see that lady’s arms?

Deceiver, you’re not the same anymore. What happened?

    Could you be more specific?

  12. 12 Henrik Sep 17th, 2008 at 3:09 am

Being the one that gave the tip to Deceiver I’d like to explain my reasons.

No, I wasn’t in the least surprised that it’s hard to sing when you’re dancing. On the other hand, seeing as how Britney (and her staff) make it like it’s her actually singing and that it sounds great - then that’s something for a site like Deceiver to highlight.

Britney’s image is (well, used to be) all about how she’s this fantastic singer. Which she’s not. Here in Sweden we had a TV-series that delved into the music-industry. For instance a female vocalist who does all of the choruses on Britney’s albums. It’s true - when it comes to chorus on some of her songs, then it’s not actually Britney singing anymore.

The show also did an “expose” on Enrique Iglesias. Same thing here, one of his sound-techs recorded the ACTUAL “singing”. You can enjoy/be disturbed by it here.
The swedish words in the beginning of the clip say “Proof that the package is more important than the contents”.

Apologies to Deceiver (I tipped them off to this one as well but fully understand that they couldn’t fit it into this post).

and we’re supposed to believe this why?
it could just as easily be another voice tracked over video of her show
whether you like her or not she has been singing and dancing since she was a little girl - it is not inconceivable that she can still do both
people sing and dance every day in live shows and musical theatre
could you have been deceived? :p

  14. 14 Chronic Malanga Sep 17th, 2008 at 7:11 am

I will never be the same again after hearing that.

I realize that singing and dancing at the same time are nearly impossible. Fine. I will give her that. However, even in the clips where she is standing still and singing, she sounds like a constipated cow. I knew she was a no talent waste, but this really hit home. After all, there are real singers out there that can perform live. Just goes to show how far T&A can get you.

  15. 15 Pastafarian Sep 17th, 2008 at 8:53 am

She can sound as terrible as she wants, as long as she goes back to being that hot.

  16. 16 bigmama Sep 17th, 2008 at 9:16 am

I lasted about 50 seconds. Please, it’s too early in the morning for this.

  17. 17 Lisa Sep 17th, 2008 at 9:35 am

Just think how terrible those who can’t sing, like Madonna, sound without miracle of audio engineering. I would love to hear a raw copy of Madonna…but it can’t be much worse than what she sounds like with help.

  18. 18 GoMegDotCom Sep 17th, 2008 at 10:22 am

I think we all knew that Britney was digitized and has lip-synced throughout her career. Although it did hurt my ears a bit, it wasn’t anything new or surprising. If she said things to the effect of “I will never lip0sync”, i would be intrigued.

I’m sorry Simon. I was in a crappy mood. You guys are still my favorite site.

Where are the PeTA Nazis at??

  19. 19 procrasterbation Sep 17th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

helena - watch any credible live show or musical. during the hard songs, the singer doesn’t move. all of the more energetic dancing happens during “dance breaks”. hence the name. you stop singing, and then dance. dancing hiphop or street jazz though, and doing it full out, it’s hard to even keep up a conversation, let alone sing on pitch. she either has the best cardio-pulmonary system IN THE WORLD, or that’s about what she sounds like.

  20. 20 GoMegDotCom Sep 17th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

I agree with Chronic Malanga: the Lolita-esque image Britney made up for the fact that she really can’t sing well.

And as a theatre major who does a bit of dancing and singing at the same time, it is a lot of work. There were times in some shows I performed where I wanted to just drop to the fall in exhaustion. But there are performers who are capable of pulling the two off. It takes a lot of raw talent, work and drive. Look at the girls on Broadway for Jebus’ sake!

  21. 21 GoMegDotCom Sep 17th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Oops, I meant “fall to the floor”

  22. 22 Sam Sep 17th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

So what does Madonna “I NEVER lip-sync in concert” have to say about this?

  23. 23 StrawberryGirl Sep 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Bwahaha! Hi-larious. Dancing or not, the girl can’t stay on pitch or in key.

  24. 24 Jrod Sep 17th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

    I’d Hit it.

  25. 25 sunshine Oct 1st, 2008 at 12:59 am
