According to the Adelaide Sunday Mail:
Animal rights organisation PETA voted him one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians earlier this year, but Aussie singer/songwriter Ben Lee says a re-count may be in order.
“I’m not sure I’m technically a vegetarian,” he said in an interview with the Sunday Mail.
“I mean, I was totally vegetarian for 10 years and I don’t eat red meat and I try to limit my consumption of animal products, but I don’t know if I technically qualify. I eat fish.”
Uh-oh. Now, you wouldn’t think fish would be on PETA’s spit-list. They’re just, y’know, fish. How can you not like fish? Heck, even PETA fave and dolphin-defending whale-wailer-over Hayden Panettiere eats sushi!
But no, PETA’s totally against it. They’ve even set up FishingHurts.com to tell you why you should drop that Filet-O-Fish, you murderer:
Many people have never stopped to think about it, but fish are smart, interesting animals with their own unique personalities — just like the dogs and cats we share our homes with. Did you know that fish can learn to avoid nets by watching other fish in their group and that they can recognize individual “shoal mates”? Some fish gather information by eavesdropping on others, and some — such as a type of South African fish that lays eggs on leaves so that they can be carried to a safe place — even use tools.
If fish are such geniuses, why can’t they figure out that a fat juicy worm isn’t worth the trouble if you have to eat it off a really sharp hook? And are they really as awesome as a dog or a cat? Have you ever had a fish snuggled up in your lap while you watch TV? (I have, but it was for my unaired Comedy Central pilot.) Well, if these Einsteins of the deep are so great with tools, they’d better come up with some sort of defense against my knife and fork.
Ben? Hayden? Comment?

hi deciever, totally agree with the celebrity thing but as far as fish go they really do have unique personalities. some are cute and cuddly -in a you can’t touch em way- and some are more independent. just because they’re hungry and go for it doesn’t mean they’re stupid, lots of humans risk their life for food too…
Poor Ben. Another victim of PETA advertising…
Don’t forget about Hayden’s personally designed $500 limited edition LEATHER Dooney & Bourke handbag, The Hayden Bag. So it’s okay to skin cows and eat fish… but leave the whales alone!
Yay! Deceiver Peta articles are back!!
Japanese porn actresses and Aussie fish eaters? PETA must be getting desperate.
This reminds me of an indepth scientific study on dolphins intelligence level….(spoiler: put them on land and they really ain’t all that brite!!)

Ben Lee?
Currently in Austin, I am listening to Chrissy Hines of the Pretenders being interviewed about her new album. In the middle of the interview about her new album she tells the world that she’s a vegan, she opened a vegan restaurant, and that a vegeterian driving a Hummer creates less of a carbon footprint than someone who eats meat (which is such a stupid, nonscientific statement that alone on its lack of merit caused be to conclude that it was prepared by PITA).
I’ve had my fill of musicians, actors, athletes or anyone who deems themselves as famous telling me how to live my life or what I should drive. If your a great musician, I couldn’t give a rats a__ about your lifestyle but more importantly, I really don’t care about your latest socially concious decision.
I offer the following alternative in fairness to Deceiver readers:
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/
Also in fiarness to Deceiver readers: Just FYI, the “PETA Kills Animals” project is funded by Philip Morris. I’m SO sure they care about protecting our freedoms, and not protecting their profits.
Ben Lee honest guy , if you eat a animal you are not vegetarian , fish are animals.
I agree with ME. Lee owned up, unlike the leather-wearing twerps previously outed by Deceiver.
Not sure this qualifies as being hypocritical. Simon, your thoughts?
Now why the heck would a cigarette company do that?
A hunting-rifle company, maybe.
I swear, sometimes people around here make absolutely no sense.
I think PETA’s the hypocrite here. Not Ben. But that’s just my 2 cents’ worth.
Wait a minute… unaired Comedy Central pilot?
Whistlebait, if you’ve got a legitimate source for this, I’ll read it, but I couldn’t find one.
And by legitimate source, I’ll give you any newspaper, even the Enquirer, the New York Times, or a local high school newspaper, but not mean Wikipedia, Bob’s Militant Vegetarian Webpage, or Lori’s Whole Milk Newsletter.
In the meatatarians’ defense (couldn’t resist…I’m eating a Baconator)…we don’t actually slaughter the pig. So why are we murderers?
Might I bring up Jenna and Tito’s fishing trip?
About what? I posted this for the halibut. Call me shellfish.
I’m at the top of the food chain. I will eat what I want, PETA. Fish is yummy.
PETA has no problem with PALIN?
My source was ConsumerDeception.com, who sources the Philip Morris USA Document Site.

Simon:
Grooooooooooaaaaaaaan.
Cod you lay off the fish puns?
They have no porpoise here.
Interesting and wholly irrelevant factoid about Ben Lee: He’s engaged to Ione Skye, who played Diane Court in “Say Anything.” In other words, he’s marrying Lloyd Dobler’s dream girl. Some chicks have all the luck.
Fish puns. I lol’d
Ok Whistlebait, the site you have provided as your source is not a legitimate site, but is itself a PETA funded site and the very first headline on its homepage reads “What Is the Center for Consumer Freedom, and Why Is It Attacking PETA?”.
I’ve read every big tobacco link on that page and there is not a single mention of the website “petakillsanimals.com”, though there are several proposed advertising projects from a lobbyist named Rick Berman.
The following WP article on Lobbyist Rick Berman links him to a series of extreme marketing events that are very much in keeping with the tone of “petakillsanimals.com”, but I could find no legitimate source that linked petakillsanimals.com to Rick Berman, though its entirely possible they are a client, but it is also entirely possible you are Rick Berman promoting yourself in a slightly guerilla (though effective) manner.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/05/AR2006040501956.html
But To say Big Tobacco funds that http://www.petakillsanimals.com is incorrect and equivalent to saying the worst client of any ad agency funds the best client…
There are more factual links to Volkswagen and IBM funding Hitler than Big Tobacco funding http://www.petakillsanimals.com.
For those interested, the title “PetaKillsAnimals.com” is a bastardization of the Peta comic book for kids (I couldn’t make this stuff up) called “Your Mother Kills Animals”.
Another irrelevant fact. Ione Skye is Donovan’s daughter. You know, “Mellow Yellow”, “Season of the Witch”. “Catch the Wind” from that TV commercial. That guy.
My deepest egrets.
So even with the craziest pseudonym I could think of, unintentional typos and unreliable sources, you still say it is still entirely possible I am Rick Berman promoting myself? You have quite the imagination, I am impressed! Unfortunately for you, I’m just a bored adult who surfs the net at work.
You asked me to site a legitimate source, and I gave you what I had. I was in fact hoping you’d rip it apart, because I couldn’t figure out who funds that site, and therefore give you your legitimate source. Since we’re sharing sources, care to share how you figured out that I linked a PETA funded site?
So what if Philip Morris is just one of the “over 100 companies and thousands of individual consumers” who fund Center for Consumer Freedom, and petakillsanimals.com is only one of those projects? Without PM’s donations there’d be no anti PETA project in the first place. That doesn’t have to be funding by your definition, but it’s close enough for me to question anything CCF and their little projects have to say.
lanette! i was gonna ask too if PETA has a problem with sarah palin yet lol!
The fish puns are krilling me!
I’d say your PetaKillsAnimals is funded by Phillip Morris myth is completely busted Whistlebait.
I’m not going to tell you how all my secrets, but I am 100% certain that Peta.com and your ‘legitimate’ source ConsumerDeception.com are one and the same.
Not only is it not a legitimate source (and I even allowed you High School Newspapers), its someone with an axe to grind, its sworn enemy.
While this is not how I determined this, here’s five times as many collaborating details as you need to prove Peta.com and ConsumerDeception.com (your ‘legitimate’ source) are built by the same people.
When I trace the IP address, every IP hop (and there are at least 7) for these two sites is identical, meaning they are not only hosted by the same company, they are probably on the same server if not the same directory. I used a different service, but this one will work just as well.

http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=trace&host=consumerdeception.com
They registered both names from the same office using the:
1. The same proxy service, Internap
2. Both registered the domain using GoDaddy.com
3. Both host their websites on Hedgehog.net, and both even use the same nameserver.

You guys are a barrel of laughs.
“My deepest egrets.”
Well, just don’t carp on about it.
Fins will get batter around here.
This is hilarious to me, because not ONCE did I EVER claim to have a “legitimate” source. I even specifically referred to it as simply a source and not a legitimate source because it happened to be something I found in a 5 minute google search after trying to find out more info about peta kills animals. You clearly assumed that I was sourcing something legitimate, and well you know what they say about people who assume things.
If anyone’s seriously listening to someone named Whistlebait for the ultimate truth on these matters, THEY have issues, not me. Also, I remain unconvinced, but now it’s simply because it clearly seems to irk you so much.
C’mon Whistlebait. Everyone else immediately dismissed you. I gave you the benefit of the doubt, listened to your argument and disproved it.
I investigated the most legitimate source you could provide and informed you that ConsumerDeception.com and Peta.com are owned, built, and run by the same people.
Feel free to continue your delusion alone, but as opposed to “irking” me, you have my complete blessing to do so.
So long and thanks for all the fish?
I’m not good with puns. ><
To be actually on the topic of the article…a vege that eats fish would actually be called a pescatarian.
Anybody for a nice barra filet and chips?
*smacks forehead*…and I do have a tendency to repeat words…actually…*rolls eyes at self*
