When all you’re known for is your work on a TV show as stunningly unoriginal as The O.C., breaking new ground isn’t always at the top of your “to do” list. So here comes Rachel BIlson with a new line of clothing for DKNY Jeans called “Edie Rose.”
Guess what’s coming? A celeb-u-tard who doesn’t know her limits.
I rally like what Donna Karan’s marketing gurus did with the Edie Rose promo website. They have a whole section called “inspiration,” listing books, magazines, actors, and other “faves” that influence Bilson’s clothing designs.
Funny thing: They left out one important inspiration — a clothing company called Sretsis (based in Bangkok, the name is “sisters” spelled backwards), which is where Bilson totally ripped off the yellow dress in her line.
At right is Bilson actually wearing the Sretsis dress in question last December, at the Dubai International Film Festival. She liked it so much that she basically copied it — and is now passing it off as her own “design” for DKNY.
Below is Rachel’s little yellow version, soon to be available at a department store near you. She’s such a little trailblazer. Blogger Natalie at Fashionista quips: “… it’s a nice gesture that she left the studs off the neckline, kind of like changing a semi-fictional character’s last name to avoid legally-upholdable comparisons.”
Coincidence? No way. Bilson follows this obscure little Thai clothing label pretty closely, judging by how often she’s photographed wearing their stuff. (Click here, here, and here for three examples that Google found in about ten seconds.)
So here’s the question, Deceiver fanatics: Is anything else in Rachel Bilson’s new collection ripped off from something in her closet? Nitrolicious has a one-page visual of the whole Edie Rose line. Do any of you fashion-conscious readers out there smell another rip-off?

M’eh, all fashion is derivative and some Roman centurion somewhere is rolling in his grave, saying… “They stole the leather tunic that I dyed with marigolds and studded with bronze!”.
I do see the obvious similarities, but seeing as how she’s such a noted fan of the brand, it would be irresponsible to do that dress without permission from Stretsis. Maybe she licensed it.
She may not be the original talent behind the dress, but maybe she’s aggregated a reasonable line from many different artists. Who knows.
You should talk to some real serious “fashion people” sometime. The kind who TiVo “What Not To Wear.”
Most music and art is derivative too, but you can copyright it. (Except for all that “sampling” in club music, which is a whole separate rant…)
Sure, I’ll buy that, but if Sretsis is in on the deal, theft becomes licensing.
Just seems like no one would leave a paper trail of paparazzi photos that wide without covering their bases.
Why do so many celebrities spend so much time in Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc.? Don’t those places have really awful civil rights histories. Especially against women?
AHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh her scares me. If only she’d rip IT off, too.
ahhhhhhhh eh i mean her head. yes, her head scares me. okay now you know.
She or any of these celebrities don’t design anything having to do with their clothing lines or any line they put out. They are just paid to front the companies. That doesn’t excuse their ignorance though. Paris Hilton wants us to believe she actually works and designs her clothing, shoe, handbag, jewelry, and perfume lines.
But–but–but!!
They’re different. It’s *yellow*. Like, duh!
Pastafarian
Most celebrity go to Dubai and Abu Dhabu this are really modern city and most of the people who live there are foreigners
This dress is so obviously a knockoff of the Sretsis one, it would be apparent even to Stevie Wonder. I doubt the original line licensed the DKNY version because if it did, it would bear the name somewhere, i.e. “Sretsis for Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans.” I don’t know what the legal ramifications would be, particularly since this is an Asian label and in Asia, everybody rips off everybody else. Had it been a Marc Jacobs or something, there would be biiiiiiig trouble. We’ll have to see. In any case, I’m willing to bet the DKNY knockoff costs waaaaay less than the Sretsis version, which is why I’m upset the dress is sold out on DKNY’s website. Dangnabbit!
I haven’t noticed anything obviously ripped off with the other designs, but they are mostly standard denim wear, with lots o’ skinny jeans. What’s REALLY hilarious is that Rachel Bilson has been recently photographed wearing every denim label under the sun except her own!
Here’s the original dress, from the Sretsis website:

They are just boring designs… Anyone could of designed them. OOps!! Someone did!! Silly me.
All this begs the question… why would an actress/whatever she is, get into the design business at all unless it’s going to be truly original?
