Just because the broads cupcakes girls over at Jezebel have gone bonkers at the very idea of a Republican woman in the White House (seriously: bonkers), that doesn’t mean they can’t sniff out a hypocrite who claims to be on Sarah Palin’s side. They’ve got a clip of former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan defending Palin and McCain on The Daily Show. Which would be nice if Noonan hadn’t gotten caught on an open mic last month saying Palin was toast. The same day she published a column in the Wall Street Journal praising Palin. Whoops!
Noonan has a point about professional political operatives. The latest unfounded Palin rumor that you can’t wait to drop in our comments at the mere mention of her? It didn’t just fall from the heavens, kids. You’re being manipulated. But for Peggy Noonan to complain about it? Look in the mirror, Peg.

Manipulated? I find that very hard to believe. By a bunch of people in the media that would sell their souls to have Obama elected? C’mon.
Surely you can’t be serious.
Well in all fairness that’s not exactly how it played out, nor indeed how Noonan explained the open mic item.
I note that you don’t include a link to the open mic kerfuffle so to help you find it and add it into the item it is at:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122044753790594947.html
I look forward to seeing it placed in the item lest one think you are not being as balanced and fair as I am sure you wish to appear.
And I look forward to your looking forward to it.
@vanderleun
Interesting. But these TV people need to stop having convos into open mics. Heck, they need to turn off all these open mics. Anyone noticed that they keep ‘em on after the debates? I can’t remember them doing that before.
Fine I’ll do it myself…
…I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.
Pastafarian:
I was at the DNC as a member of the media, and I can honestly say the press is not in the tank for Obama (fingers crossed). I mean, I didn’t witness people openly cheering and weeping tears of joy in the press gallery (yes, weeping) when champions of the party came out to speak (still holding fingers tightly).
Carlo – Are you being facetious? Did the press weep and cheer at the DNC convention?
Hi folks, I’m long time lurker here, just waiting for a good excuse to join in the conversation.
I gotta agree with Vanderleun because I’m a regular reader of Noonan’s columns and also saw an interview with her on FOXnews (I think it was Brit Hume’s Special Report) after the open mic incident.
Noonan has been a warm supporter of Palin. She has run several columns supporting her as a valid VP choice, some of encouragement during the Bristol fiasco, and a few of frustration that either Palin was being stiffled or that she wasn’t living up to her potential. Overall, Noonan’s tone has never been hyper-critical or mean spirited. Most of her columns sound like the voice of a gentle mentor.
Noonan states things pretty straight. Yes, she is a conservative, but she’s not afraid to tell the GOP when they’re screwing things up, and she congratulates the DNC when they’re doing something right. You don’t get that kind of give and give-alike with many opinion reporters, they’re either all red or all blue and rarely cross camp lines.
Which is why I think the open mic incident was a “Gotcha” moment for someone in the control room. Taken out of context it sounds awful, and not at all like Noonan’s normal tone.
Why is this happening more? I don’t think it’s a case of Noonan (or Jessie Jackson) forgetting that their mics were live. I think news producers have decided that during-commercial chatter can make big news if you catch the right people saying something in the wrong way at a time when their defenses are down.
This stuff used to end up on the cutting room floor. Now it makes headlines and feeds the 24 hour news beast.
Peggy who?
“You’re being manipulated.”
Thank you, Deceiver folks, for existing. Election time makes me lose what little lingering faith I might have had in humanity, but at least I know there are a few other who refuse to consume the soma….
it’s not so much the fact that sarah palin is a republican that women (not girls) are so upset about the thought of her in the white house, but more that she stands for everything i, and many other women, are against.
Sorry johnna, but for every woman Palin DOESN’T represent, there is another woman for whom she is an acceptable match.
I’ve met far more Sarahs in my lifetime than I have Glorias. And frankly, the Glorias were sort’a annoying.
The fact that a woman candidate is once again upon a national political ticket should be a reason to rejoice… for both sides of the political spectrum.
Yeah for Geraldine, yeah for Hillary, yeah for Sarah. With every female candidate, females in top office look a little more commonplace. No matter which woman is on the ticket, sexism dies a little more.
You dames sure are picky!
i never said palin doesn’t represent any women, and i never said all women dislike her. i simply said that many, MANY women disagree with her values, and those values are why they are up in arms about her not the fact that she’s republican.
and ok, you’ve met more “sarahs” than glorias.” well, i’ve met more “glorias” than “sarahs,” and the “sarahs” were sort’a stupid. so, who wins? and above all, who cares?
I care. Because I’m a woman who believes in authentic equal opportunity. Therefore I support any woman having a go at any elected office.
It’s fine to disagree with Palin’s politics, but to insinuate that she’s some sort of Uncle Tom because she disagrees with NOW, as if they hold the sublime key to all femininity is sheer and utter nonsense.
And that’s what NOW is doing. That’s what Gloria’s doing:

Part of being human is the ability to reason. To chastise a woman as somehow less than human, less than female for disagreeing with one political action committee is ludicrous.
Does Palin REALLY represent EVERYTHING you are against? She’s not peddling Fascism, so I have to assume there are at least one or two things the two of you could agree on. Maybe not enough to earn your vote, but certainly she deserves some respect.
And you’ll notice that I never assumed that all the Glorias I’ve met were stupid. Intelligence is not necessarily determined by ideology.
