Daryl Hannah’s PETA Worship Has Its Limits

From London’s Observer on Sunday:

Animal rights activists are nothing if not consistent. It was surprising, therefore, to see vegan actress Daryl Hannah, a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wearing suede boots to Richard Branson’s party last week. “They were my mum’s,” she explained. “I only wear leather when it’s a gift.”

This reminds me of the deal where PETA is giving fur coats to goat-herders in Africa. You see, it’s okay because they’re gifts.

I like this new vegan-of-convenience ethos. Maybe we can get Omaha Steaks to send Pam Anderson, Alec Baldwin, and Alicia Silverstone a few cases of New York strips. Just tell ‘em Darryl says it’s okay to dig in if you don’t actually pay for it.

Hell, I might just send a Smithfield ham to PETA headquarters, just for kicks.

Isn’t that just typical? It’s okay so long as somebody else pays for it.

  2. 2 Toubrouk Oct 5th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

It’s not about somebody else paying for it, it’s about somebody else killing it.

This make them carrion-eaters and scavengers, not humanists. Where is the greatness about shifting responsibility instead of supporting ideals?

If someone was wearing a fur coat it’s ok because it was gifted?! You can wear it because someone else killed it not you. PeTA is just a joke..

At least she’s got herself in the media. She will sell her story to OK magazine. Get a guest sport on Desperate housewifes as the local drug dealer..

Toubrouk… how very right you are. Carrion eaters indeed.

but um has daryl ever worked with PETA… this blog would be cooler if u didn’t make stuff up…

Y’know, I didn’t fact-check The Observer, which wrote that she is “a supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.” Come to think of it, I also didn’t double-check that she spells “Daryl” with one “r” … how weird is that?

  8. 8 Aleric Oct 6th, 2008 at 10:15 am

So is this like Carbon Credits, as long as she offsets it with either someone else paying for it or keeping a poor person from killing the village goat then she gets Credit?

  9. 9 Jrod Oct 6th, 2008 at 10:43 am

So PETA Freaks only throw paint on people wearing furs they BOUGHT, not ones they got for Christmas…

Wow…this must be hard to find out before assulting them…

Toubrouk – thanks for that reminder….I love being a carrion eater!!

I would also like to thank Daryl Hannah for this….I can now buy my wife that fur coat and she can buy me that leather jacket and we can both be guilt free!

Can we call her a comp-egan then?

So, if I send ten bucks to SomethingStore.com and they send me meat (or other animal product), that would be okay because I didn’t REQUEST meat but I just happened to receive meat?

What if I signed up for a meat-of-the-month subscription? I didn’t request any particular kind of meat — after all, they could have sent me tofurky — but they sent me meat at random. Would that be okay?

What if I ordered meat but FORGOT that I did it and it — SURPRISE — showed up on my doorstep one day? Or what if a relative ordered meat on my account but didn’t tell me about it. Surely that would be okay with PETA.

  13. 13 The Oversneer Oct 6th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

In the new PETA ethics, I don’t think you’re allowed to buy it or request it in any way. It has to just drop into your lap as a gift.

But this is fun. I like hypotheticals. What if you got it from the federal government instead of a stimulus check?

So does that mean they have to get the receipt before they ruin someones possesion?

Her “MUM’S”??? Is she sporting a fake accent to match her suede jacket? She’s from Chicago.

That goes along with Bruce Friedrich’s attitude that people who consume the Eucharist aren’t breaking their vegetarian vows since Christ is willingly giving His Body and Blood in the sacrament.

A few years ago PETA had it’s “Jesus was a vegetarian” campaign going full-swing, and after digging a little bit, I found out that the guy over that campaign is Roman Catholic. So I wrote to him and asked him about his alleged vegetarianism and how it conflicts with the Roman Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation.

Needless to say, he was not a happy camper. Not long after I wrote to them they updated the FAQ section of their site, explaining that someone can be a vegetarian and still consume the Eucharist because Christ willingly gives His Body and Blood in the sacrament.

Moral of this story? You can eat all the meat you want, wear all the fur and leather you want, as long as it was willingly given to you, and you’ll still be a Petarded vegan in good standing.

She looks familiar. Was she in any movies with Cher?

Isn’t Friedrich the same head guy at PETA who got into trouble some years ago for encouraging the PETA faithful to go out and blow up slaughterhouses, restaurants, and medical research labs? I wonder where the Catholic catechism stands on that …

Didn’t Jesus divide the Loaves and the Fishes or something. Are you still a veggie is you serve Fish to hundreds of people? Maybe he didn’t eat it…

  20. 20 Vince Oct 7th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Not sure if Friedrich did that or not, I didn’t hear about that one. Wouldn’t surprise me, though.

Hiya — David here from the Center for Consumer Freedom (the folks who brought you the “PETA Kills Animals” website).

Bruce Friedrich has indeed advocated violence on several occasions. The most famous example was at the 2001 national animal rights conference. We have the audio archived at:

    http://consumerfreedom.com/downloads/reference/audio/010501_bruce_friedrich.wav

Here’s the transcript. Remember, this is PETA’s Vice-President, and a self-proclaimed Catholic pacifist:

“If we really believe that these animals do have the same right to be free from pain and suffering at our hands, then, of course we’re going to be, as a movement, blowing stuff up and smashing windows. For the record, I don’t do this stuff, but I do advocate it. I think it’s a great way to bring about animal liberation … I think it would be a great thing if all of these fast-food outlets, and these slaughterhouses, and these laboratories, and the banks that fund them exploded tomorrow. I think it’s perfectly appropriate for people to take bricks and toss them through the windows, and everything else along the line. Hallelujah to the people who are willing to do it.”

  24. 24 IceClass Dec 27th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Could someone please explain to me why so many celebrities are willing to lend their name to PeTA’s brand name building and fundraising ventures even though their VP advocates political violence?

Does someone really have to go a and brick some vacuous celebs home for them to get the point and for the media to call them on it?

Exactly what does it take to cure this myopia?
