New Voting PSA Shockingly Features Left-Leaning Celebrities

YouTube Preview Image

The Creative Coalition has been promoting an ad featuring tons of movie and television stars encouraging people to vote. (For those of you wondering, it’s similar in structure and production value to the one that Leonardo DiCaprio produced but the two are unaffiliated.)

It’s a point I’ve made before, but certain celebrities who appear in this video have a well-established record of supporting only Democratic candidates. Susan Sarandon, I’m looking at you. You too, Samuel L.

It’s one thing to get the word out and use star power to register young voters. But when the message comes from partisan players, it limits the PSA’s impact and makes it look like young people of a certain political persuasion are the only ones who matter.

Also, not a single Asian person to be found in the ad? Really? Yet they used Gossip Girl actor Ed Westwick — who I positively love, btw — and he isn’t even American.

    Hmmm…

It’s sort’a apropos that when they spelled out V-O-T-E with their bodies, the E pointed to the left, not the right.

I wonder how many of THEM will actually vote. I wonder how many are even registered.

  3. 3 Sara Oct 8th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I wonder how many of them are actually registered to vote, or even citizens. I would like to see who even makes it to the polls.

    so, kill the messenger?
    or
don’t register until asked by right leaning spokespersons?

I personally recommend the second position for budding republicans.

The sappyness alone makes me want to barf.

Who’s a budding Republican? Not I. But would it have killed the Creative Coalition to throw in an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Ben Stein appearance for the sake of bipartisanship? I would have even settled for Angie Harmon.

    so, kill the messenger?

No, just point out that the messenger is dishonest. I’m pretty sure that’s still allowed.

    Geobushono-
It should be noted that millions of Republicans manage to find their own way to a Secretary of State’s office to register themselves without waiting for ACORN to do it for them… again and again and again and again and again and again…

Arnold is a RINO. Also, I’m guessing the ads feature left leaners because “budding republicans” probably don’t need to be reminded to vote.

Don’t forget liberals, election day is the first Wednesday of November, show up early and often!

“I wonder how many of THEM will actually vote. I wonder how many are even registered.”

Every year the same damn thing: “rock the vote, “snort the vote”, “ya-know-they-got-a-cure-for-that-now-the-vote”, etc.

20-somethings just don’t vote. I didn’t. My dad didn’t. My wife didn’t. My friends didn’t. Maybe this year will be different. But if there is truly a G-d, it’ll be just like every other election cycle.

It just makes me a little more cynical to see this sort of thing.

  12. 12 Austin Oct 9th, 2008 at 8:34 am

I don’t see why they didn’t let Mel Gibson in there.

You too can help to make a change. Round up every transiant in the neighborhood and have them register to vote, hell have him register at several different places, and don’t worry about them remembering their own name, simply look at the local NFL teams and pick the names you like.

If that doesn’t work then do what they have done in Chicago for decades, give the deceased the oppertunity to vote again, make grandmas or grandpas day.

Maybe the right can make their own PSA. I would love to see it.

What gets me is the goofball dancing in this. Like that’s going to motivate me.

LOL yeah I know Pastafarian I was being a smart ass.

I think we are missing the overall point.register.vote. thats it. Overall the actors (most of them) appeal to the lowest percentage of registered voters. Its so sad that it takes commercials to try to get us to register which takes a whopping like 3 min. We have become so retardly apathetic its disgusting. Many americans didn’t vote in the last pres election (Bush) and look where its gotten us today. vote pple! plse

I love how these PSAs always seem to leave out the most important part of voting - actually casting an EDUCATED vote! Don’t just wander in there stoned and tick off a name because of the party attached to the name, or just because you like the way one guy’s name sounds, or whatever. If you’re going to vote, vote well, vote because you care, vote because you know something about the issues!
But no, that’s never worth mentioning! It apparently doesn’t fit into the whole uber-sappy idea of having celebrities dance just to try to get me to vote. Bleh. Hollywood… and they wonder why they’re losing so much money.

And is anyone else tired of Hollywood starting off their “important” videos with a bunch of celebrities just staring intently at the camera in silence? Whenever a video starts that way, I just want to gag and turn it off. I’m so tired of that intent staring! That doesn’t make me feel like what you have to say is any more important, it just makes me think you’re a self-important jackass.

Hehe, anyway, yeah, my two cents. Or three. Or four… :)

I hate people telling me it’s my responsibility to vote. No it’s not. I have a right to vote, but I can damn well choose not to exercise that right if I want.

Reading, Watching, and Acting has been interesting. I qualify my commentary by sharing my background, as a 100% disabled veteran of Iraq, a West Point grad, 9-11 survivor, and finally a registered Independent. My “opinion” is that it is a good thing to encourage people to vote, it is a good thing to express dissent, it is a good thing for anyone and everyone to organize, encourage, and “legally” address the need for partcipation in voting. I don’t hate the Left or the Right, but I often disagree with platform segments of both. I vote for whom I believe is best for the country, but I have always been willing to put myself in harms way to preserve the rights of those who may only be concerned with ideology, a particular issue, or a single party line. Bye the way it is … your responsibility in as much as it is your responsibility to know the law of the land and the constitution. The biggest problem is that most of us don’t really know what is going on… I use myself as an example…. I didn’t read the entire constitution on my own accord until I was 26. There’s more too it than the text book excerpts.

Cynical… Reality … Issues are complex, Life is hard, Good people sometimes do bad things, Bad people sometimes change. It’s never been Black and White in my experience, but there are many shades of grey! Cynacism is a choice… so are partisanship, ignorance, integrity, service, and patriotism. For the 1000’s of dead or wounded 20 somethings who have fought in defense of our country- I VOTE!
