Joe The Plumber Was Once A Welfare Recipient

YouTube Preview Image

Can’t believe this one almost passed us by: Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher went on Hannity & Colmes last week after the election and — surprise! — it turns out he was once on the dole

The transcript of the progressively hostile conversation (the fact that it’s from Fox News makes it way more interesting):

Alan Colmes: You don’t think [Obama]’s loyal to our country?

Joe Wurzelbacher: To what, to democracy? Yeah he got democratically elected but he’s proposing a lot of changes that could change the core of America, don’t you think?

Alan Colmes: Well he may propose changes and maybe you don’t even agree with the changes but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his country. When you question someone’s loyalty to America, you’re really questioning whether they’re a good American. You’re questioning whether they’re patriotic. Is that the kind of dialogue we want to have in this country right now?

Joe Wurzelbacher: Didn’t Joe Biden say it was patriotic to take my money and give it to other people? That’s patriotism too?

Alan Colmes: Well, let me ask, you were on welfare once, was that taking somebody else’s money and giving it to you?

Joe Wurzelbacher: Paid into welfare. It’s something to be used, not to be abused like it often is … It goes against my principles. I stand firmly on those. Taking someone else’s hard earned money and putting it into my pocket — that’s just stealing, man.

Makes for an interesting argument against “redistribution of wealth,” no? He’s also previously credited welfare with giving his family a leg up from poverty. And his parents received welfare “a couple different times.”

Once his fifteen minutes are up (and really, we’re at sixteen minutes and counting at this point), there’s always Dancing With The Stars.

FYI for Political Commentators

Presented without comment from the Volokh Conspiracy:

With a switch from Republican to Democratic control of the White House a few weeks away, I thought I would remind political commentators of the new ground rules.

1) Republicans Must Now Oppose Executive Power; Democrats Must Be In Favor Of It. In the last few years, Republicans have been the defenders of executive power: A muscular executive has been needed to fight the war on terror. On the other hand, Democrats have opposed a strong executive on the ground that it threatens the rule of law. Please note that these arguments must now switch. Republicans must now talk of the dangers of executive power; Democrats must now speak of how a strong and agile executive branch is necessary to a modern democracy.

2) Republicans Must Now Oppose Judicial Confirmations; Democrats Must Be In Favor. In the last few years, Republicans wanted an up-or-down vote on judicial nominees; one of their leading blogs on the judicial confirmations was ConfirmThem.com. On the other hand, Democrats focused on the importance of carefully evaluating judicial candidates. Please note that these arguments must now switch, too. Republicans should now visit RejectThem.com (still an available domain name, btw — won’t be for long!), and Democrats should emphasize the need for a quick up or down vote.

3) Republicans Must Now Favor Legislative Oversight; Democrats Must Now Oppose It. You get the point by now. Yup, everyone has to switch sides on this one, too. If we all stick to the script, in 6 months the old arguments of the Bush era will be long forgotten. (Oh, and extra credit to those who charge the other side with hypocrisy for changing sides without noting that they have changed sides, too.)
