Religious Tolerance Dialogue Continues From Saudi Arabia. Seriously.

Saudi Islamic scholar ... "By Allah, we will not be satisfied even if all the Jews are killed!"

Saudi Islamic scholar: "By Allah, we will not be satisfied even if all the Jews are killed!"

In March I wrote about how Saudi Arabia’s King Adbullah issued a call for a sincere “interfaith dialogue” in the Middle East — even though the practice of religion in his own country is so restricted that conversion to a non-Muslim faith is punishable by death.

So who do you suppose is sponsoring today’s discussion at the United Nations on religious tolerance?

Yessir. Saudi Arabia. And more than a dozen world leaders showed up to show their approval beg for crude oil.

From this morning’s International Herald Tribune:

“It’s like apartheid South Africa having a conference at the UN on racial harmony,” said Ali Al-Ahmed, a Shiite Muslim dissident from Saudi Arabia based in Washington …

Saudi Arabia forbids its citizens and the sprawling expatriate community, including tens of thousands of Christians, from any form of public worship except for Islam. Even within Islam, the more than two million Shiites in the kingdom face widespread discrimination in worship, education and employment. The intolerance also extends to Sunni Islam. Only the teachings of the Hanbali sect are encouraged, while the other three main branches of the faith are opposed.

A special police force patrols the kingdom making sure that Muslims go to prayer five times a day and that no other religion is practiced.

Ah … tolerance.

Why do I suddenly have the urge to go on a picnic?

Pastafarian, it must be the smart headwear and the promise of intelligent and stimulating conversation.

Ah, the eternaly angry Muslims of Saudi-Arabia. I wonder what drives it? An inferiority complex in front of rich, educated people?

Maybe they are shocked to know that their economy is going to hell due to the oil barrel at 58$US. It’s hard to be productive when the only thing you know how to do is to pump out black liquid from the bottom of the desert…

  4. 4 Aleric Nov 12th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Not true Tobrouk, as the article stated, they also know how to represss their country mans religious and civil rights all in the name of Allah. After all if you expect to be part of the populace that have a voice you will have a share of that “black gold” that bubbles out of the lands they seized from other tribes.

Holy Moses, what is wrong with you people? They want religious harmony so long as you agree there is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet. I mean, Jesus, really, just get with the pogrom already.

So many people in America are totally okay with religious harmony until someone mentions Christianity or any other religion telling them that what they are doing is against what their religion says.

Reminds me of a customer service cartoon I saw, where the man behind the “RETURNS” counter tells the person who brought in the broken toaster, who apparently was not happy with just a refund or just a replacement, “what if I take the broken toaster, give you a new one, refund your money, we fire the guy who sold it to you, we put the guy who designed it in jail, and close the store for good … would ‘that’ satisfy you?”

Maybe it’s just that too much sand makes one irritable. I was in Moscow as part of a tour of Europe in 1972 — the hotel’s toilet paper was like wax paper. No wonder the Russians were all grouchy and crabby-looking and paranoid. They simply needed decent paper.

All I really know is, I’m getting real intolerant of people who are intolerant … I think … did I say that right ?….

The proof is in the action, not shallow words. When peopke in Saudi Arabia are free to follow the faith of their choicing and Muslims are free to convert to whatever faith they choice, I will believ the words … until then ….blah, blah, blah

I’m laughing too hard at the idea of Saudi religious tolerance to even have a well thought out response like so many of you have. It’s pure, comedy gold.

  10. 10 Delphi Nov 13th, 2008 at 9:29 am

They can’t even tolerate different factions of their OWN religion, let alone anyone else’s. Plus, that guy pictured above looks salty as hell.

  11. 11 Victor Nov 13th, 2008 at 9:44 am

Rocko! Apostate! It’s, “Allah, peace be upon him, really, just get with the pogrom…I mean, program…get with the program already!” Stone yourself immediately, in Allah’s name.

    Salaam, apostates.

At least they treat their women right…..

And as for the rest of you, don’t you know you are supposed to respect other cultures?

Show some respect to the Saudi that slaughters his daughter.
Show some respect to the Somali who stones the raped victim to death for commiting adultry.
Show some respect to the Indonesian who blows up 100 people because he doesn’t like disco. (who does?)

    You simple-minded Americans!

  13. 13 Jrod Nov 13th, 2008 at 10:43 am

    Kelsey,

You mean people who insult what you believe? Of course that is upsetting. If I say I believe my Jesus is a Zombie, and you tell me I am wrong, YOU are being the intolerant one. And I have a right to be upset with you. You are no different than Abdul or who ever up there if you are trying to “correct” peoples beliefs who don’t want them “corrected”.

Ps- I totally would not hit that.

I saw this headline on Yahoo News yesterday, and would have burst out laughing if it weren’t so pathetic. Like seeing the old apartheid regime in South Africa sponsor a meeting on racial equality and harmony.

The Saudi government’s attempts to be best buddies with the G8 powers/world community and simultaneously buy off its terrorist population would be amusing if it weren’t so scary. As hypocritical regimes go, they’re Top 5 in my book.

  15. 15 Pastafarian Nov 13th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

C’mon Jrod. Low lights, a little soft music, the beautiful desert stretching out before you, the purr of a camel….

  16. 16 Scott F. Nov 13th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Pasta – you ever smelled a camel bro? Absolutely nothing romantic about that. Of course, judging by the picture, you could probably say the same thing about the Saudi.

  17. 17 Pastafarian Nov 13th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

No but there was this time me and Greg went to the zoo… Don’t tell peta.

    Take that Ralph Nader!

It’s called dhimitude and it’s coming to a country near you… hang on to your hats, turbans, heads even

  19. 19 MC Mom Nov 13th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Does anyone else think dude looks a bit like Fred Armisen doing Obama, only with headscarf and authentic Beard of the Truly Faithful?

Not a political comment on Obama, by the way…

  20. 20 D---- Nov 13th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Saudi needs to get its s**t together and build a real economy with a sustainable society. Over the next 10 years as alternative fuels become more mainstream their money ship is gonna start sinking and unless they do like the Emirates (open up and diversify)

  21. 21 Rocko Nov 13th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Alas Victor, I have already tried to stone myself to death. I threw the rock, it hit me in the head and I came to still alive (and a little dizzy). I consider my continued existence as Allah’s, peace be upon Him (thank you for correcting me!), divine justice.
