Regular Unleaded is $1.89/gallon in my neighborhood today. How about you?
Still, this anti-Chevron bit from the League of Conservation Voters is clever. It’s a response to those cheeky Chevron ads on buses and subway trains that spout energy-conservation nostrums like “I will leave the car at home more,” “I will replace 3 light bulbs with CFLs,” “I will finally get a programmable thermostat,” and “I will consider buying a hybrid.

Normally, I don’t encourage people to donate to do-gooder groups. But if it supports the promotion of sarcasm, I’m all for it.

I wonder how Joshua McNeil got to work today. Magic Carpet? Hypocrisy indeed.
Gasoline comes from the gas station. Electricity comes from the wall plug. And even though gasoline and electricity are nice things to have, the gasoline company and the electric company are bad. Makes sense to me.
I don’t think anyone particularly LIKES energy companies – but I do often have to wonder why they’re singled out. You could say the exact same things those ads say about the oil companies about any number of industries.
If subsidies piss you off – why are we paying farmers all over the country NOT to grow food while the world is suffering a food shortage and human beings are dying?
If lobbying pisses you off – why do trial lawyers, auto workers, and beer companies get a pass?
If pollution is such a big issue for you – why are you complaining about American oil companies? Their impact is a grain of sand on the beach compared to super-polluters like Mexico and China.
If you want more money in alternative energies – why do you expect the oil companies to foot the bill for this? Because they have the audacity of making a profit off an entirely legal and necessary resource? Yeah, it’s in their best interests to be at the head of the curve if a new discovery is made so that they don’t get left in the dust by the competition, but at the same time you have to understand the ‘growing pains’ that will be involved. You think they can just switch production from oil to hydrogen (or something else) overnight? A lot of those companies will likely go under during that period, so it’s not something that they’re likely very eager about. How many other industries do we expect to be actively researching ways to put themselves out of the job?
If you have a 401k, pension plan, mutual fund investment, hell… even a checking account
then YOU are the oil company,
YOU are the automotive company,
YOU are the electric company.
I just don’t understand the mass hatred of large corporations. We all have a stake in their survival. We all benefit when they do well. We all suffer when their ability to generate profit is infringed upon.
Big oil isn’t some Snidely Whiplash lurking down a dark alley.
You, me, even the crazy cat lady down the street,
We are Big Oil.
I hope none of the “League” use oil or natural gas or electricity generated from coal etc etc.
They should be featured on this site for being hypocrites if they do.
Wow…I got nothing to add here. good repsonses! There is really no one I can say I would “hit” here either…
My work here is done.
Someone at the League of Conservation Voters needs to go back to school for a remedial math course. $2.5 billion is more than 1% of $214.1 billion.
$2.35 in my hometown.
$1.89? Nice.
Re: Chevron’s resources
Are they including the cost of the gas pumps and the Kwik-E-Marts as Chevron’s resources? After all, they are technically an asset. Chevron could sell them on eBay and use the money to buy hybrids.
Re: Spending…to influence politicians
How much did the UAW spend to influence politicians on their bailout?
How much did the NEA (teachers’ union) spend to influence politicians?
How much do environmentalist wackos spend to influence politicians?
How much do “big agriculture” spend to influence politicians to pay them to not grow food?
As for the Trent Lott one… Do oil companies receive government checks like welfare recipients do? Or when they say “taxpayers hand oil companies billions of dollars”, do they mean the income tax rate cuts that taxpayers are paying to oil companies… as if all money belongs to the government and when taxes are cut, the government has to “pay” for them?
Why is it the only time Liberals and Democrats are concerned about the taxpayers is when they talk about spending money on something they don’t want to spend money on or something they don’t want to let keep their income? You never hear Liberals and Democrats talking about “taxpayers hand…[welfare recipients] billions of dollars…[to sit around on their butts all day while you go to work].”
Yep, sorry but the people pointing the fingers at Big Oil and saying they are the problem are actually the ones who need to turn that finger around. These same politians, beurocrate and so called experts are the same groups that imposed massive regulations on all the gas producers to make 500 different types of gas to meet state regulations for air quality. The same people who impose local taxes on every gallon of gas you pump and increase it every 4 years. Who in 1996 locked out 90% of the areas to acquire new sources of energy since it would take more than 10 years to set up and start producing more oil. Who won’t allow additonal Nuclear power plants to be used as an energy source but won’t shut down the ones already running since it makes them money in the big cities.
That is the true Hypocrisy.
*victory dance* $1.79!!
I LOVE energy companies.
Energy companies have helped make America the greatest country on earth.
Now if I could only finish putting together my lawsuit so I can sue energy companies for not providing me with the ability to find a hot chick and get laid tonight.
$2.05 and dropping. Thanks G.W. Bu$hHitlerPuppyKickerRoveCheneyPalinCastroStalinPolPotMao!
He gets blamed when it goes up. He should get the credit when it goes down too. And yes someone already said that before me, but its true and I don’t remember who said it so that makes my it okay.
$1.61 a gallon regular here and dropping.
I said it Pasta.
But it’s okay because I love the HitlerPuppyKickerRoveCheneyPalinCastroStalinPolPotMao thing.
‘cept you forgot KacynskiMussloiniJolieGuevara.
BTW: $1.72 here this morning and that was at a Mobil Full Serve.
The Speedway down the street just changed their sign – $1.52. It’s lining up around the block as I type. I keep saying it folks – this economy has been a godsend for a lot of people, myself included.
