Obama The Public School Reformer Will Send His Kids To Private School

Barack Obama, at a speech to the NAACP on July 14:

“We need to fix and improve our public schools, not throw our hands up and walk away from them.”

The Associated Press, yesterday evening:

President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

ABC News, a few hours earlier:

An Obama aide added, “Mrs. Obama is the product of public education on the South Side of Chicago and she believes strongly in the importance of good public schools for all kids…”

… except her own, of course.

Barack Obama spent four years as Chairman of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, part of a $500 million project to fix, reform, and otherwise spiff up America’s screwed up public schools. Must not have worked much.

Yeah, yeah, I know — it’s a personal decision that parents should make based on what’s best for the kids. Blah, blah, blah. But do you remember the “day after the election” episode of The West Wing where Matt Santos made the opposite choice? For all the right reasons? (Everyone’s watching TWW in reverse nowadays.) That was cool.

Show me a politician whose kids go to a public school, and I’ll show you a guy with a real incentive to make public schools perform. I think thousands of kids trapped in DC Public Schools just got screwed.

Mmmmm… Change.

OK … This One’s Not Barack Obama’s Fault

London’s Sunday Times just moved a story that tickled the Deceiver radar. It’s titled “Green Obama’s official limo is a gas guzzler,” and it opens like this:

On the campaign trail, Barack Obama promised to get a million plug-in hybrid cars on the road by 2015. His own new presidential limousine will be far from green, however.

The Obamobile being prepared for the president-elect is said to be a monster gas-guzzler … based on a GMC 2500 truck that gets less than 10 miles to the gallon. Three cars are believed to be in production so that two can serve as decoys.

While security is paramount – the car is built to survive roadside bombs as well as gunfire – there are hybrid four-wheel drives on the market, such as Ford’s Mercury Mariner, which some critics believe could have been adapted for the president.

The key is buried in the portion of the article I omitted above, which kinda obliterates the rest of the setup:

A spy photographer who tracks down future car models for magazines snatched pictures of the heavily disguised first-car-in-waiting when it was being road-tested last summer.

So in other words, this car is probably being prepped by the Treasury Department, which runs the Secret Service. (Remember — the same agency is responsible for fighting counterfeiters.) No matter who on the election, this would have been his new ride.

If you’re looking for genuine gotchas to pin on the incoming POTUS, I’d suggest keeping an eye on the federal government’s Affirmative Action policy. After all, now that it’s been proven that a black man can be elected President, wouldn’t it be hypocritical for him not to dismantle the countless federal laws providing race-based preferences in hiring, government contracting, student loans, public university enrollment, and other benefits?

Not that I’m expecting him to do the right thing. His most important job, after all, will be to get re-elected.
