<blockquote>
I have roughly the same rules. If an animal is demonstrably sentient, I don’t eat or wear it. Everything else is fair game if it’s not endangered.
</blockquote>
<a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sentient" target=_blank rel="nofollow">"Sentient": having the power of perception by the senses; conscious</a>

That's a pretty wide net you're casting there. Aren't cows "conscious"? I don't suppose eggs are, but if you let them grow into chickens...

Heck -- pretty much every member of the animal kingdom has some "perception by the senses."

Methinks reliance on "sentience" as your yardstick is the weenies' way out, unless you go vegan. And that's fine. But it doesn't leave room for half-measures.

Somehow this is taking Ms. Panettier to task for differentiating between dolphins and cows. Dolphins are likely the second smartest creatures on Earth, after cows. We kill and eat cows to keep them from taking over. It's simple self preservation, people.

Seriously, though. I have roughly the same rules. If an animal is demonstrably sentient, I don't eat or wear it. Everything else is fair game if it's not endangered. Many people won't eat anything above fish. Many won't eat anything above plants. This actress seems to draw her line at a pretty generally agreed on (and yes, fuzzy) definition of sentience and self awareness. I don't think she's a hypocrite for it. Hell, kudos to her for defending the Cetacians. They need it.

    The only reason I don’t eat meat is because of the effects of factory farming.

Isn’t that why God invented organic beef? (To assuage consciences like yours?) I’m just saying …[/quote]

Organic doesn't equal no effects for the environment. It just changes the cow's diet, not the way in which they are raised, the amount of cattle in one unit or, more importantly for the environment, the amount of methane produced. Unless you buy super-exclusive, super-expensive grass-fed beef, "organic" beef is just as bad as regular beef for long term impacts. Not trying to push you toward not eating meat, just to be a responsible consumer. Unlike Hayden, who can't really decide where she stands. She probably doesn't even eat dolphin-safe tuna. Another reason to scoff at her. And gag a little whenever I see her.

I'm a vegetarian, and even I think PeTA is hilariously stupid.

Because honestly, nature is a helluva lot more brutal than humans. I've never seen a human being drag a half-dead gazelle into a tree and then munch its insides.

The only reason I don't eat meat is because of the effects of factory farming. Anything beyond that is pretty stupid, imho.
