Oprah’s Mea Gulpa

Oprah pulled a Carnie Wilson and regained a ton of weight after pushing countless fad diets and dietary pseudo-experts on the American housewife. (She’s also to blame for Crocs and Dr. Phil’s miserable fame trajectory, neither of which is a forgivable offense in my book.)

In the new issue of O magazine, she gets candid about how she ended up at 200 pounds again:

“I’m mad at myself,” Winfrey writes in an article provided early to The Associated Press by Harpo Productions.

“I’m embarrassed,” she writes. “I can’t believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I’m still talking about my weight. I look at my thinner self and think, ‘How did I let this happen again?’”

Winfrey, an admitted food addict, sounds almost apologetic in her article.

“I definitely wasn’t setting an example,” she writes. “I was talking the talk, but I wasn’t walking the walk. And that was very disappointing to me.”

I have to give her kudos for being honest about it, and I’m not going to rag on her when she’s clearly hard enough on herself. But let this be a lesson to everyone: Never take dieting advice from a woman who’s been on something called a “liquid protein diet.” Gag.

    “Liquid protein diet”.

    Ummm…yeah.

“Oprah went on to write that she gained 60 pounds in 2 years because an out-of-balance thyroid condition made her scared of working out. She said she knew shit wasn’t right when she almost missed a taping with ”
Now, I’m no Oprah, but I have hypo-thyroidism myself and I have been on armour thyroid to correct it. That doesn’t mean I have lost a lot of weight after getting it managed but one of the symptoms of an out of whack thryoid is not being “scared to work out.” It may make working out frustrating because you work and work and don’t lose a pound or you are too exhausted to work out but that is a pretty lame excuse. My naturopath is managing my condition. I can only assume Oprah has every medical resource available to keep her in tip top shape.
Here is a guess. Instead of having a medical condition creating fear of getting on the treadmill, Oprah is like the rest of us. She gets tired at the end of the day and would rather eat fried chicken then go to bed instead of doing boot camp. And since she is Oprah, ain’t nobody going to tell her to put the fried chicken down and get her running shoes on.
On the positive side, she is admitting she is like us lower mortals with the same concerns and she is doing what she can, in public, to get back on track. Maybe she will inspire some other folks.

    Fad diets don’t work.

  4. 4 KG Dec 9th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

you should really make her a regular feature. She is also responsible for shows based on sh*t which can easily be debunked in 2 minutes on snopes. She did an episode on lipstick parties which is debunked, among countless others. Bitch, go retire to your Montecito home that uses a sh*tload of water when you aren’t even there.

Now, now, remember its “do as I say not as I do” when it comes to Celebrities and Political figures. Oprah, who likes to JUDGE people constantly on her show and in her magazine needs to be held under a spot light when she is found to be a liar.

I give slack to people who try and fail but don’t blame others, Oprah doesn’t fall in that catagory.

Queen Bee, I’ve had hypothyroidism for 20 years and have never once been “scared to work out.” Too tired, yes. Too lazy, yes. But most hypothyroidism is easily manageable with synthetic thyroid or natural remedies, so I’m not really buying that she gained 60 pounds in 2 years *just* because of an out-of-whack thyroid.

Watch it, guys! We don’t want to be too hard on Oprah in here . . . I mean, somebody might come in here and start calling us names . . .

Thats alright Oprah I am sure Jrod would hit it!

  9. 9 Lisa Dec 9th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Sixty pounds in two years from a thyroid problem, Not likely. When your meds do need adjusting you put weight on very quickly. That weight gain amount is slow and works out to 5lbs a month. That is definitely Hand and Mouth disease, not hypothyroidism.

My concern is that she thinks she needs to be an example.

  10. 10 Pastafarian Dec 9th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I would D. She’s a billionaire, I have flexible morals, and standards, I like money, and when she’s thinner she’s actually kinda hot in an ugly sort of way.

“I have flexible morals, and standards, ” – see I knew we are related!!

Oprah annoys me. I’ve said this before, I know.

I hate when celebrities make a big deal out of how much they weigh or don’t weigh. Y’know what? I’m thin and in good shape. Big freakin’ deal. If I were fat I would still be happy with myself because I like who I am. Every time Oprah, or any of these famous people make an issue of their weight like this, it implies that they cannot be happy with themselves unless they look like they are in the last stages of TB, and that’s just the most pathetic form of fame whoring I can think of other than simply being Heidi Montag.

Not one of those stupid diets work. Eat right, keep active, and shut the hell up.

  13. 13 Habanada Dec 9th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Agree, Chronic. We need to get off this weight obsession here in this country. I hate Oprah but she never looked unhealthy or even that overweight to me. The same with Queen Latifah or any number of other apparently “heavy” celebrities. The fuss we make about dieting is just ridiculous and I tell you what, if I get one more *stupid* e-mail or Facebook ad about “magical acai berries,” I might just kill something!

  14. 14 D--- Dec 9th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

magical berries? are they anything like my magical shrooms?

  15. 15 SinCityTaoist Dec 10th, 2008 at 2:03 am

The biggest problem with people like Oprah is that make a big deal out of everything they do. It’s like they need that to give their life some kind of meaning. Anyone who needs to advertise everything they do has some kind of insecurity. Anyway I am sick of celebrities talking about their “weight issues”. Saying someone is overweight is not saying that their ugly. Overweight and obesity are health conditions. These neurotic celebrities are the ones turning it into a beauty issue.

A grown person who has a weight problem who ignores it is the one endangering their health not society. An overweight person who does nothing about their weight is no different then an alcoholic who doesn’t want help and is content on drinking themselves to death. There are people in this world who are starving, who are sick and worse yet children in this country who are sick because of their parents’ bad health habits and people like Oprah who are eating themselves to death, expect other people to take care of their health or come up with miracle drugs or stem cell therapies to fix their bad health habits. Massive amounts of resources, such as money, time, logistics, are being wasted because too many people in this country act like spoiled little children. There are also hard working doctors who have their credibility harmed because people like Oprah have some charlatan on their show twisting legitimate medical science into some fad diet.

If celebrities like Oprah want to kill themselves slowly they can go right ahead but don’t guilt me when I point it out. I’m also sick of them using eating disorders to guilt people into not mentioning their weight. And by the way this country does not have a “weight obsession”. One third of Americans are obese and an additional third are overweight so if there’s any obsession here it is that people are that fat. The problem here is that people don’t place enough of an emphasis on health and a healthy body is not overweight. Deal with it!

  16. 16 Chronic Malanga Dec 10th, 2008 at 3:42 am

D, if they were like magical mushrooms… well, let me just stop while I am ahead. ;)

Habanada, you are so right. I am not one of those people that thinks it’s right to blame the media for a girl’s eating disorder (I blame parents and self esteem issues that are made worse by media), but the fact Oprah’s weight is news, or the subject of an interview, really just makes no sense, especially given the fact that she has yet to do the right thing regarding her weight in order to keep it off. She’s out to appear more normal or whatever, but she just looks desperate for attention.

I don’t get it. When did it become cool to even reveal how much you weigh? My husband doesn’t even know how much I weigh and I have nothing to hide.

  17. 17 katie Dec 10th, 2008 at 4:03 am

AMEN chronic and habanada! i’m sick of everything revolving around weight. so what? its insane and no wonder to me why so many young girls (especially) have body issue problems. and habanada, those stupid berry diet things on myspace and facebook are so ANNOYING! good god, i know what you mean!

  18. 18 Habanada Dec 10th, 2008 at 10:22 am

Yeah, I thought women were supposed to spend all their time sheltering their weight like a big, huge secret. But I guess if it keeps them in the news . . . Oprah must not have a whole lot else going on??

SCTaoist’s got it, basically. Overweight does not *necessarily* mean unhealthy, though it does mean having to be a little more health-conscious. \

Sadly, D, the magic berries look more like s— than mushrooms. Down with the acai berry! Down with it!

  19. 19 Chronic Malanga Dec 11th, 2008 at 7:07 am

“Yeah, I thought women were supposed to spend all their time sheltering their weight like a big, huge secret. But I guess if it keeps them in the news . . . Oprah must not have a whole lot else going on??”

That made me giggle, Habanada. It might be a Cuban thing or something, because no woman in my family reveals her weight unless she’s getting weighed in at the doctor. Doesn’t matter if you are fat, skinny, or somewhere in between. It’s just one of those things that’s on a need to know basis and a little tacky to go on about. Maybe that’s old fashioned, and my husband laughs at me for it, but I don’t care. I cannot imagine being famous and discussing something that personal with the rest of the world, especially when the person discussing it has no obvious authority on the matter. With all her money and ability to hire personal trainers, nutritionists, etc., Oprah should have tackled this issue ages ago. And if she actually had, then written a book about how she did it while managing to keep the weight off, I would have respected her for it. Right now, though, it almost seems as though she’s trying to make people forget the Palin thing by talking about how fat she got.

  20. 20 Habanada Dec 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I think it just must be an old-fashioned thing. Or perhaps it’s a normal person, non-celebrity thing. Because all my life I’ve still heard women with the whole, “Why, I’d rather die than let someone know my weight.” I don’t see the point in going that far–I mean, it’s got to go on your driver’s license, for one thing–but why *anyone* should care what a celebrity weighs is beyond me. Actually–I don’t think anyone does care what she weighs. That’s why she’s all over her own magazing apologizing profusely–trying to make someone care so she can get some attention.

  21. 21 MC Mom Dec 11th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Chronic, I’m always taken aback by what celebrities are willing to discuss with the world. The need for attention must constantly outweigh the desire for privacy.

  22. 22 Chronic Malanga Dec 11th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

I think you are onto something, Habandada, she wants someone to care… and I certainly agree, MC Mom. A lot of the stuff they do talk about, not just their weight, are the sorts of things I wouldn’t discuss with anyone but my husband or mother.

I am so glad that the two states I had a driver’s license in did not list weight, and UK driver’s licenses don’t either. I would have been walking.

  23. 23 Sue Dec 15th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Oprah will constantly have weight issues until she finds a way of eating that suits her. Following the advice of Bob Greene and Dr Oz is not working for her.
