Queen Elizabeth II is allegedly warning her fellow royals to rein in their extravagant spending in light of the current economic climate.
Reports the Agence France-Presse:
Always concerned about staying in touch with her subjects, Queen Elizabeth II has invited Britain’s royal family to follow her example and tighten the purse strings during the financial downturn.
The 82-year-old monarch has warned her grandsons Princes William, 26, and Harry, 24 — third and fourth in line to the throne — that all ostentatious signs of living it up would be inappropriate, according to newspapers.
British subjects are apparently in no mood to see the young royals partying in exclusive London nightclubs while the kingdom sinks into recession, the cost of living rockets and jobs are lost.
How exceedingly appropriate and — dare I say — queenly of her.
Though I wonder what that means for the £7-million custom-designed private jet she personally commissioned in September. You know, the one for her family’s exclusive use with the separate compartment for her Welsh Corgis. Maybe they could reupholster the leather seats with polyester for the sake of appearances.

Ah, Queenie. Why even try?
Isn’t she supposed to tell everyone to eat brioche? And couldn’t the Queen liquidate some of her assets to infuse a little cash into the system? Isn’t she one of the wealthiest people in the world? Or did Diana clean her out?
Heir Force One?
Yeah, yeah I know.
Aren’t we supposed to spend our way out of recessions? So wouldn’t blowing huge mountains of cash on unneeded, durable goods be the patriotic thing to do?
Help a brother out, your Majesty!
I see the hypocrisy here, but I ain’t gonna be the one to tell QE2 she can’t do something. Chick’s a hardass.
And I think Snoop’s right…maybe Her Majesty should add more bling to that new plane.
Hey, she can’t possibly cancel that plane order at a time like this. Think of all the British airplane manufacturers depending on her!
A private jet in private airports is not ostentatious.
Partying in downtown London and photographed by hordes of paparazis IS ostentatious.
Maybe England is in recession because she’s hoarding up all that money! Spend, Lizzie! Spend!! Put it back in the system.
The moral being it’s okay to throw your money around so long as you don’t get all in everybody’s face about it. For example, Scrooge McDuck should keep his riches in a vault under his mansion not a Money Bin on the outskirts of Duckburg. That’s just wrong.
I am with Demesure – rein the princes in. How many people are employed by the Queen? How many are with work because of her lifestyle? I would guess there are a more than a few that depend on her for their livliehood.

Just to be fair, if you continue that to it’s logical conclusion: the princes should actually INCREASE their partying. Just think of all the awful techno DJ’s and bartenders who would go out of business without those kids and their hangers-on.
My problem, maybe because I have only lived in GB for two years, is that she’s so freakin’ cute I can’t say a word against her.
Scott F, you beat me to it. Aw, man…
Partying is never “blowing” cash. Never.
Or maybe it’s the other way around.
Prince Harry has a job-killing Al-Quaeda. He deserves all of the tail he can get. What do the rest of them do? Why do we care?
Pinandpuller–I have *always* wondered why the heck we care what these people do. No one’s ever given me a satisfactory answer.
