Tyra Banks Finds It Difficult to Simulate Real Generosity

Not everyone can be Oprah. The talk-show mogul has her issues, but she throws a pitch-perfect holiday show.

Tyra? Not as much.

Last year, La Banks stiffed her entire staff while spoiling her studio audience with fur-lined boots, cell phones, and designer clothes. No holiday bonus for you, peons!

This time around, she filled her audience with people who had recently been laid off and lavished them with computers, cash, and diamonds to help cheer their spirits. Jezebel has the video:

“And it’s just in time because this audience — as well as a lot of you out there — have just lost their jobs and these people here could really use this stuff … If you take a look at everybody’s shirt in this audience, they all have something in common. They all have recently lost their jobs, and everybody’s wearing a shirt that says UNEMPLOYED. And what they represent is a lot of us at home who are watching right now that are out of a job.”

How very gracious of her, to force her down-on-their-luck audience members to wear bright red shirts that announced their joblessness. I’m sure they really cheered them up, going on TV as a charity case.

But the thing that really gets me? Of COURSE her television audience is out of a job. Who else is home at 11 AM on weekdays? Moreover, she needs them to be. You need only look at what kind of advertising Tyra attracts during her commercial breaks.

the shirts were part of a Tyra-specific meme where previously she made her audience wear shirts with their weight on them and how many partners they had

As my mum would say – she’s just a ‘low rent’ Oprah. When is she going to get cancelled?

I will say she looks better than Opie, but then I have never watched her show since I have a full time job and a game addiction.

She has a face that begs smacking, and this just made it more so.

Tyra is one of those people that the less exposure she gets, the more people can attempt to believe she’s just a sweet girl… otherwise, it’s a playground for sites like this.

However, stay-at-home moms (the few that are left) are the ones who are home at that hour and who stuff like this is aimed at (i.e., the same people watching soap operas). What someone sensible enough to be at home with the kids would be doing watching her is beyond me, though.

For someone who claims to have her ‘original’ boobs, her cleavage looks awfully wonky.

Forgetting the fact she stiffed her staff—The first thing I thought of when I heard this (and I felt the same way when Oprah gave everyone in her audience a car last year) is, “If they’re unemployed, where are they gonna get the money to pay the taxes on that stuff?”

(Yep, all of that stuff is taxable income.)

How did they get to the show?

  10. 10 StrawberryGirl Dec 21st, 2008 at 12:56 pm

How about stuff they can use, i.e. gift cards to buy food, cash to pay the rent/utilities/mortgage, pay off some of their bills? Unless Tyra figures they can sell the goodies on eBay…

“Of COURSE her television audience is out of a job. Who else is home at 11 AM on weekdays?”

Well…my husband works a weird shift, so he’s usually home at 11 AM on weekdays. But he’s normally sleeping at that time.

Oh, who else is at home at 11 AM on weekdays? Celeb bloggers. ;) But then, I’m smart enough not to watch Tyra.

I used to watch America’s Next Top Model. Over the seasons, Tyra has become progressively insane. At first, it was very business like, professional, “This is what you need to do to be a model.” Then it morphed into, “Tell me about being molested as a child. Try to work that pain into your modeling.” I stopped watching because Tyra has clearly drifted into some Heart of Darkness mode, – the horror, the horror.

Queen Bee, I’ve never watched that show, and I am so glad now that I never bothered. If I were one of those aspiring models and had Crazy Eyes Tyra telling me that I would work my pain through my fist and onto her face.

The point of the show was for the unemployed I doubt her staff is underpaid

  20. 20 Beige Jun 6th, 2009 at 8:57 am

I’ve never watched Tyra’s little vanity project, either. But will someone tell me this: Is her automatic assumption that everyone she comes in contact with has been molested? I mean, as horrible and evil as sexual abuse is, and as much as I’d like to see pedophiles skinned alive and rolled in Grape-Nuts, it just. Isn’t. Universal. Really. No, REALLY. It isn’t.
