Rachael Ray has (Poisoned) Puppy Love

I hate Rachael Ray. There — I said it. Did you know that Google returns 161,000 website hits when you search for the words “I hate Rachael Ray”? (289,000 if you spell “Rachael” wrong like I did the first time…) My favorite results are here, here, and here.

You know how most people would really like to pummel Kelly Ripa and Katie Couric for being so damned perky and faux-cute, but we give them a pass because they were just born that way? Well, Rachel Ray is sorta like a wind-up version of that, and it’s okay to wish a butt-kicking on her because, well, she just deserves it.

Too much? Maybe.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer is delivering today’s walloping of Rachael. Seems she, in all her cuteness, contributed a “pet friendly” holiday recipe to Modern Dog magazine, and it contains onions. Which are pretty damned dangerous to feed a dog.

The magazine has since zapped the recipe from its website, but the entire feature (verbatim, with poisonous doggy dinner) is still available in Ray’s own online universe. Along with a photo of Ray sharing said poison with her dog.

Rachael makes a big deal of promoting “pet friendly” recipes as a part of her evil, cute plot to take over the media universe once Oprah loses her golden touch. I just wish she weren’t also secretly bent on killing our pet pooches, PETA-style.

Here’s another “pet friendly” Rachael Ray recipe including 1 cup of milk, which can give some lactose-intolerant dogs a nasty case of diarrhea.

Real friendly, Rach. Reeeeeeal friendly.

I saw this not long ago and it just chapped my hide. She annoyed me before this, but it’s just that much worse now.

Dogs in general are lactose intolerant once weaned.

Dogs can die from eating too many onions.

Just to get it out there, here are some other foods dogs should not have:

    Ham – can cause pancreatitis
Chocolate – an obvious one, but people still leave it lying around
Grapes/Raisins – very poisonous to dogs

I just hope that people have sense enough to ignore crap like this and just listen to their veterinarians. Dogs should eat their own food, which is especially formulated for their needs. If you are not giving them regular dog food, then the only other safe option when carefully researched and given the okay by your vet, is a diet of selected raw meat. We don’t need to give them freakin’ gourmet nonsense, doggie “cupcakes”, or whatever the hell else all these trendy idiots are giving their dogs.

I’m going to shut up now before I spontaneously combust.

I watched an episode of her cooking show once, because I’d heard she was supposed to be good and she’s kinda cute. I turned it off after 5 minutes because of her voice. It’s like listening to an unholy mixing of nails on a chalkboard, violent vomiting, and a cat being forced into a meat grinder. Her voice makes me want to slap the taste out of her mouth.

    Onions, grapes and raisins..check!

Now I can finally get the neighbors dog to shut the hell up

Dislike Rachael Ray all you like (hee!) but calling her out on this particular recipe is shortsighted (and it makes it look like someone didn’t do their research). The website that you linked to says that the supposed toxicity amount for onions is 1/2kg for a 10kg dog — which means that for a dog that weighs 22 lbs, they can eat over a pound of onions without any noticable effect. A pound of onions would be something like 3 large onions, which I daresay would give YOU the same toxicity problems if eaten all at once (upset stomach, etc.). Her dog, for whom the recipe is written (according to the link you provided), is a pit bull, which probably weighs between 20-40 pounds, meaning that it could eat somewhere between 3 and 6 whole onions before getting ill.

Also, the website that you linked to says that “Despite the dangers of large quantities of onion, many people believe that in small quantities it is beneficial.” so they’re contradicting themselves right there.

I think a better story on how RR is a Deceiver would be about she is rude to restaurant staff (as well as her own TV staff), even though she’s supposedly “been there, done that” or maybe how she mispronounces food names on her cooking show? Review some of those old $40 a Day tapes and find some where she gets tours of the restaurant from the chef, behind the scenes access, and a waitstaff who pulls out the stops and then she recommends leaving $1 gratuity (because it is exactly 15% of the meal).

I think Tyra is much worse than Rachael.

  6. 6 phoenix Dec 30th, 2008 at 2:29 pm

God, I hate her. I love how if you pay for the magazine you can get “easy holiday tips” like her pumpkin pie recipe- buy a frozen pie, then put whipped cream on top. I can see why she deserves a media empire.

And her 3-pack a day voice kills me.

  7. 7 Jrod Dec 30th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

First off, I would totally hit it.

2nd off…if you give any animal (or Person) who is lactose intolerant a cup of milk…it is a bad idea for the bowels. So what? Next time you read a “Kid Friendly” cook book and it has “Milk” (or eggs or nuts for that matter) are you going to throw a fit? My Dog Loves to lick up spilled Milk that I am not crying over.

PS- my dog eats lots of table scraps (hamburger and stuff)…are onions that bad? Crap!

Am I the only one that wishes the pit bull would go nuts and bite her?

Alright, I am probably going to regret this, but curiosity is killing me! Why the hell do nearly ALL women seem to hate this chick? I’m no fan, but I’ve caught the show a few times to see what all the fuss is about. She’s reasonably attractive, personable enough for TV, seems to have a genuine personality.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am generally the first person to snatch up the pitchfork and torch when some good ‘ol mob justice is needed, but in this case, I just don’t get the virulent aggression this woman seems to elicit in other women. Is it because so many men seem to like her?

Just seems out of place to me, considering that her show is pretty popular while women apparently hate her, and men rarely watch cooking shows outside Iron Chef – who’s watching it?

The only “people” food I’ve given my cat is cooked turkey from Thanksgiving and Christmas – and that in small amounts and mixed in with the other wet food. Anything else? No way. Solange is a shelter cat, so I don’t have any real medical history to check on.

Amazingly, she doesn’t like “people” food that much. I can put my plate on the table and leave it there for five minutes to cool, and Solange won’t even jump up onto my chair to sniff at it.

  11. 11 Swede0319 Dec 30th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Giddy girl, you need to check your numbers on the amount of onion to dog weight. Also, I’d say that the pit bull in the picture is closer to 50-70 pound range. That is the lower end of the weight scale for American Bull Terrorist (according to the AKC Breed Standard).
For all pet lovers out there: If your dog eats something that it shouldn’t, like chocolate, onions, potpourri, anything with seeds in it, even a type of yard mulch, and if you catch it fast enough, give the animal 1/2 – 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide. This will make them vomit and get the poison food out of the system befoe it is absorbed. If not, get the animal to your vet ASAP and let the vet know what you suspect the dog ate. As for RR to give that recipe, just shows she’s a nitwit.

  12. 12 Chronic Malanga Dec 30th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

OK, granted, you have to give Rover a lot of oninons before it hurts them (less than what what giddy said, though, but I’m drunk and not about to do the math), but think about this. You give them Rachel’s recipe every day, and all those onions on a daily basis are not good. So why? Why not just give your dog what it should have and be happy with it? You think your dog will know better? Sure, your dog would like what you are having, but who’s the boss here? Best to give them what they should be having and leave it at that. I’m not saying that the occasional table scrap for a treat will kill them, but why screw up your dog with things it shouldn’t have to begin with? My dogs LOVE that I give them the fatty bits (I hate visible fat on my steak and admit, I love my steak to look like a hockey puck before I eat it) from my steak, but that’s a once in a blue moon thing.

Scott F. As a woman who is perfectly happy with who she is, and secure with her own looks no matter what others think, I don’t hate her because she’s cute. She is adorable. Problem is, she’s a freakin’ idiot with a nasty attitude off camera that makes most people, especially women, want to smack her.

Just to add, the only reason I am not commenting more tonight besides general inebriation is because my British husband has never heard Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves In London”, and has been singing that rip off Kid Rock song all night. So, yeah, more tomorrow, folks.

I watched Rachael Ray once, a year ago, because I had to play her in a theater production (it was about food through the ages). And yes, it really did suck.

This is why I hate Rachael Ray: Anyone who claims to be a professional food-preparer yet constantly tosses, pets, and throws her hair over her shoulders, that person should–should just have their hands cut off. Okay, I said it.

Other than that, she must be cute because people said I looked just like her onstage (;)), but between her attitude and unprofessional mannerisms, she puts the “noxious” in “obnoxious.”

  15. 15 broxie Dec 31st, 2008 at 8:54 am

Why do I hate her? She honks. I wouldn’t hate her if she just honked in private, but for god’s sake why must she use that thing in public?

  16. 16 nonegiven Dec 31st, 2008 at 9:30 am

Some processed foods contain xylitol, very dangerous for dogs, it can cause liver failure.

  17. 17 phoenix Dec 31st, 2008 at 10:47 am

    Jrod-

Um, you’re missing the whole idea that onions are ALWAYS bad for ALL dogs. Am I wrong here? If every single child was lactose intolerant and you had a “child friendly” recipe that included milk…yeah, I think most parents would object.

Why do women hate Rachel Ray? She has an empire based on telling you what to do. Problem? She rarely knows what she’s talking about. If you read one of her books, magazines, etc, you end up feeling profoundly scammed that she managed to convince you that she has any advice worth paying for.

Plus she has a voice that makes Lucille Ball seem soft spoken and charming.

  18. 18 I LOVE HER SHOW Dec 31st, 2008 at 11:51 am

I have watched her show quite a few times. I love her recipes, her bubbly personality. She brings something new to the same old tv cooking shows. I can’t imagine why some of you post on here to hate this woman for no apparant reason. You quirky crazy animal rights people go overboard on things to begin with,, now you have channeled you craziness into a recipe…..your all nuts! She is doing a great job, has fought hard to go from just working in a Macys position to landing a top spot on her own television show. Just jealous! I love her show and so do a lot of others and she is still there because of that! So, she must be doing something right….

  19. 19 Delphi Dec 31st, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Hey there, Swede. I don’t mean to be a jerk here, and I know I’m off topic, but I’ve gotta take issue with you calling pit bulls ‘bull terrorists’. Please don’t do that. Pit bulls have a bad enough rep, and they are NOT the problem. Abusive and irresponsible owners ARE. If you’d ever met a responsibly raised pit bull, you’d have a hard time calling it anything other than a super-friendly clown. I know from experience. I own two of them, one of which was a rescue from an abusive owner. The only pit bull attacks in my house involve being licked on the face. I don’t mean to be all self-righteous here, but this breed needs a defense and has no voice of it’s own. *steps off soapbox*

Also, dogs should not be fed garlic. And Rachael Ray sucks.

  20. 20 giddy girlie Dec 31st, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Regarding the math on the onion v. dog ratio, it’s taken from the link in this article (http://www.dog-food-corner.com/toxic-dog-food.htm#Onions_and_Garlic), which says “Some research suggests that the deadly level for a dog is about 50kg of onion per kg of dog, which equates to half a kilogram for a 10 kilogram dog”. (1/2) kilogram = 1.10231131 pounds; 10 kilograms = 22.0462262 pounds. Which means that a dog twice this weight (50-70lbs, in Swede’s estimate) may be able to tolerate more than 1lb of onions.

This is all based on what that dog food site says, I am not a Dog v. Onion expert, so don’t quote me (or feed your dog a bunch of onions). This site may be mistaken and there could be typos (which I suspect, 50kg:1kg sounds wrong), I have no control over that. I am just offering a counter-point to what the Deceiver article is using as their reference. If you have a more accurate reference, you might want to send it to the author.

As a fan of Pit Bulls, I am with Delphi here. Pit Bulls are great dogs, but they get a bad rap because of the stupid people who fight them or otherwise make them aggressive. Any dog can be made into a killer, but it normally takes a stupid human to do it.

Giddy, I will have to check out the site later as I am out the door. Thanks for the link! I still just have to wonder, though, why give them to dogs anyway? There are better things out there for them.

  22. 22 Swede0319 Dec 31st, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Hi Delphi, that wasn’t an attack on pit bulls. I have owned them & shown them in the conformation ring and they are one of the best dogs I have had the pleasure of owning and showing. And you are correct that in any dog raised by stupid, irresponsible people will turn out bad. The “terrorist” part is a misnomer to all the Terrier breeds in the dog show world due to their personality and traits. No offense was intended. BTW, Well Done on the rescue! I wish more people would do rescue and not shop at pet stores. All that does is spawn more puppy mills.

giddy girlie, thanks for the link. I’ll look it up. Most of the info about bad food for animals comes from various dog breed clubs blogs/info email/AKC/UC David Vet Hospital studies. I think that with all studies, there is a bias towards results that you want to fit your position on said subject. Case in point, the manditory spay/nueter (MSN) at 6 months old. There are many studies that support and many that debunk the MSN. The study that I subscribe to is not until the dog is at least 18 months old. This allows all the bones and joints to fully develope in the animal. Something to do with hormone development. If you go to the UC Davis Vet hospital web site, you can get more info on the various studies that have been conducted.
    Off my soap box now.

  23. 23 bubbasmom Jan 1st, 2009 at 10:26 pm

Swede, pit bulls are not an AKC breed. American Staffordshire Terriers are, however. Semantics? Maybe, but if you’ve shown in conformation, you should know that. Also, if you’ve looked at the standard for pit bulls, you’ll note that they’re not supposed to be big dogs. Also, desirable weight for a male APBT is 35 – 60 pounds. That’s not a really big dog. Plus, excessively large or massive dogs are to be penalized. This is my breed; I’ve been into AmStaffs for around 25 years.

And no, I try really hard not to feed them milk. They are world champion farters…

  24. 24 Annie Jan 2nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm

As this has been discussed ad nauseum, I will say this: Why would you want to feed your dog something that has the potential to kill it anyhow? I’ve seen huge retrievers get sick over just a hershey’s kiss and I’ve seen a chihuahua go just fine after consuming an entire fudge bar.

With that being said: You never know how much can kill your dog, so you’re better off omitting it.

As for the I love her show person…have you ever tried to make something? I make excellent food according to my friends and family but the times I’ve tried her recipes….disastrous. I admit that risks should be taken in the kitchen…but come on….She proclaims herself as this excellent little cook and this knowledge on all things….and really, she doesn’t know a damn thing. I abhor her. And the only reason she IS around is because she’s cute, which is fine. But cute does not equal=knowledgeable.

  25. 25 giddy girlie Jan 3rd, 2009 at 6:08 am

the link is the one given in the blog post above written by the Oversneer, it wasn’t one that I found. :) In fact, a google search comes up with several websites that discuss onion poisoning for dogs and they all have conflicting info, so I have no idea what the ratio is. Like Annie said, why feed an animal (or person) something that can possibly harm them at all?
