the link is the one given in the blog post above written by the Oversneer, it wasn't one that I found. :) In fact, a google search comes up with several websites that discuss onion poisoning for dogs and they all have conflicting info, so I have no idea what the ratio is. Like Annie said, why feed an animal (or person) something that can possibly harm them at all?

As this has been discussed ad nauseum, I will say this: Why would you want to feed your dog something that has the potential to kill it anyhow? I've seen huge retrievers get sick over just a hershey's kiss and I've seen a chihuahua go just fine after consuming an entire fudge bar.

With that being said: You never know how much can kill your dog, so you're better off omitting it.

As for the I love her show person...have you ever tried to make something? I make excellent food according to my friends and family but the times I've tried her recipes....disastrous. I admit that risks should be taken in the kitchen...but come on....She proclaims herself as this excellent little cook and this knowledge on all things....and really, she doesn't know a damn thing. I abhor her. And the only reason she IS around is because she's cute, which is fine. But cute does not equal=knowledgeable.

Swede, pit bulls are not an AKC breed. American Staffordshire Terriers are, however. Semantics? Maybe, but if you've shown in conformation, you should know that. Also, if you've looked at the standard for pit bulls, you'll note that they're not supposed to be big dogs. Also, desirable weight for a male APBT is 35 - 60 pounds. That's not a really big dog. Plus, excessively large or massive dogs are to be penalized. This is my breed; I've been into AmStaffs for around 25 years.

And no, I try really hard not to feed them milk. They are world champion farters...

Hi Delphi, that wasn't an attack on pit bulls. I have owned them & shown them in the conformation ring and they are one of the best dogs I have had the pleasure of owning and showing. And you are correct that in any dog raised by stupid, irresponsible people will turn out bad. The "terrorist" part is a misnomer to all the Terrier breeds in the dog show world due to their personality and traits. No offense was intended. BTW, Well Done on the rescue! I wish more people would do rescue and not shop at pet stores. All that does is spawn more puppy mills.

giddy girlie, thanks for the link. I'll look it up. Most of the info about bad food for animals comes from various dog breed clubs blogs/info email/AKC/UC David Vet Hospital studies. I think that with all studies, there is a bias towards results that you want to fit your position on said subject. Case in point, the manditory spay/nueter (MSN) at 6 months old. There are many studies that support and many that debunk the MSN. The study that I subscribe to is not until the dog is at least 18 months old. This allows all the bones and joints to fully develope in the animal. Something to do with hormone development. If you go to the UC Davis Vet hospital web site, you can get more info on the various studies that have been conducted.
Off my soap box now.

As a fan of Pit Bulls, I am with Delphi here. Pit Bulls are great dogs, but they get a bad rap because of the stupid people who fight them or otherwise make them aggressive. Any dog can be made into a killer, but it normally takes a stupid human to do it.

Giddy, I will have to check out the site later as I am out the door. Thanks for the link! I still just have to wonder, though, why give them to dogs anyway? There are better things out there for them.

Regarding the math on the onion v. dog ratio, it's taken from the link in this article (http://www.dog-food-corner.com/toxic-dog-food.htm#Onions_and_Garlic), which says "Some research suggests that the deadly level for a dog is about 50kg of onion per kg of dog, which equates to half a kilogram for a 10 kilogram dog". (1/2) kilogram = 1.10231131 pounds; 10 kilograms = 22.0462262 pounds. Which means that a dog twice this weight (50-70lbs, in Swede's estimate) may be able to tolerate more than 1lb of onions.

This is all based on what that dog food site says, I am not a Dog v. Onion expert, so don't quote me (or feed your dog a bunch of onions). This site may be mistaken and there could be typos (which I suspect, 50kg:1kg sounds wrong), I have no control over that. I am just offering a counter-point to what the Deceiver article is using as their reference. If you have a more accurate reference, you might want to send it to the author.

Hey there, Swede. I don't mean to be a jerk here, and I know I'm off topic, but I've gotta take issue with you calling pit bulls 'bull terrorists'. Please don't do that. Pit bulls have a bad enough rep, and they are NOT the problem. Abusive and irresponsible owners ARE. If you'd ever met a responsibly raised pit bull, you'd have a hard time calling it anything other than a super-friendly clown. I know from experience. I own two of them, one of which was a rescue from an abusive owner. The only pit bull attacks in my house involve being licked on the face. I don't mean to be all self-righteous here, but this breed needs a defense and has no voice of it's own. *steps off soapbox*

Also, dogs should not be fed garlic. And Rachael Ray sucks.

I have watched her show quite a few times. I love her recipes, her bubbly personality. She brings something new to the same old tv cooking shows. I can't imagine why some of you post on here to hate this woman for no apparant reason. You quirky crazy animal rights people go overboard on things to begin with,, now you have channeled you craziness into a recipe.....your all nuts! She is doing a great job, has fought hard to go from just working in a Macys position to landing a top spot on her own television show. Just jealous! I love her show and so do a lot of others and she is still there because of that! So, she must be doing something right....
