Norm Coleman is No Longer a Big Fan of Concession Speeches

UPDATE: Coleman sues.

It truly must be The End of Days. The United States Senate seems poised to seat a professional comedian. To go along with the dozens of other professional comedians who currently serve in the “august body.”

If you’re from Minnesota, I have to hand it to you. Say it with me: “Senator Al Franken.” It sure beats “Senator Garrison Keillor” or “Senator Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura.” Well played.

But even if you can’t stomach the idea of Stuart Smalley sitting on the Senate Armed Services Committee, you have to appreciate the delicious hypocrisy that Norm Coleman and his camp are now showing after the whole re-count fracas.

What a different two months can make!

November 5, 2008:

U.S. Sen.  Norm Coleman today gently suggested that Democrat Al Franken concede the U.S. Senate race to him, thereby beginning the healing process.

“The prospects of overcoming 725 votes is extremely, extremely, extremely, extremely remote,” said Coleman, speaking at his campaign office in St. Paul late morning.

“If you ask me what I would do, I would step back,” said Coleman …

“My hope is that we would begin the healing process today,” said Coleman of closing the political divides in the state and nation.

Coleman lawyer Tony Trimble at a January 5, 2008 press conference:

“The process is far from complete. There can be no confidence in the current results of the United States Senate recount. We will file a contest within the next 24 hours to prompty correct those problems and inaccuracies.”

And Trimble again, speaking yesterday to the Associated Press:

“This process isn’t at an end. It is now just at the beginning.”

Oh, goodie. It’s truly too bad Saturday Night Live is on hiatus. They could have brought Franken back to play himself, complete with the tasteless rape jokes from Playboy. I’m calling Bill Hader for Coleman.

Seriously, though. Pundits on both the Right and the Left are advising Coleman to give it up. If not for the chance to be Minnesota’s next Governor, then how about for the chance to avoid being written about on Deceiver? Or the chance to watch Al be Al for six years? If nothing else, maybe we’ll get to see Mick Jagger impersonations on the Senate floor.

What would be wrong with “Senator Garrison Keillor?”

  2. 2 Stan Jan 6th, 2009 at 1:03 pm

Not to split hairs here but it’s a bit different conceding when the election has been stolen from you (Norman) as opposed to conceding when you should have lost (Franken). The way votes kept popping up for Franken before and after the recount is remarkable as well as many questionable decisions have been made that give Franken the advantage. A good place to look this up further is http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/ I don’t know much about the guy but his blogs on the Minnesota recount seem to be pretty level headed and even handed.

  3. 3 Ed Jan 6th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Well, that guys blog is far from even handed, but the entire recount process was streamed live on http://www.theuptake.org/ . Anyone could have watched the preceedings. It’s going to be a tough lawsuit for Coleman to win since the whole thing has been recorded for posterity.

  4. 4 Jannah Jan 6th, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I agree Ed! :-) And you’ve got that right Stan, the way these ballots are showing up all over the place is dizzying!

Well, like Ed Koch once said when he lost…”Uh, that’s what uh, they voted for and uh, they’ll get uh, what they deserve.” He was right. And Minnesota will realize what they voted for too, eventually. Franken makes Caroline Kennedy look like a pretty good pick now. :-o

  5. 5 Jrod Jan 6th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Have you been to Minneapolis? It is Hippie Central. I hate Hippies.

  6. 6 Stan Jan 6th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

I meant the blogs on the Minnesota recount seemed even handed. I haven’t read anything of his other work as of yet. He admits when decisions have worked in Coleman’s favor but points out with examples how the recount has favored Franken overall. He’s even convinced my liberal, pinko, commie buddy that something smells funny in Minnesota.

  7. 7 StrawberryGirl Jan 6th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

This is how Democrats steal elections every time it’s close. They magically find a few spare ballots sitting around with none of them for the Republican and all of them for the Democrat.

  8. 8 Queen Bee Jan 6th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Recently, I read that, allegedly, Norm Coleman was the one who came up with the phrase, “Sore Loserman” to describe Gore/Lieberman during their recount process. If true, that should also count as hypocritical.

  9. 9 Pastafarian Jan 6th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

I always thought Al Franken was funny. Was.

  10. 10 Minnow Jan 6th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

No way in hell I’d concede when they’re counting stacks of ballots from car trunks and 25 counties have more votes than voters.

Something smells very Lutefisky in Minnesota…

  11. 11 Kristine Jan 6th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

*points to Minnow’s comment and nods*

According to a quote in this article, which seems to make sense in any world still controlled by logic (which may or may not be earth), some of the batches of votes they’re finding for Frankin are statistically impossible. How convenient that the poll workers are sorting them by senate candidate!

This is all Democrats do if they have a chance — drag it out long enough to see how many votes they need and then… just set it and forgetit! In a matter of days they’re enjoying the sweet, juicy taste of ill-gotten victories in such races as the Washington governor’s race, Loretta Sanchez beating Bob Dornan…

  12. 12 islero47 Jan 6th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

This recount happened exactly as Ann Coulter said it would. Votes for Franken mysteriously and statistically impossibly keep appearing. Then, as soon as Franken had an acceptable margin of votes in the lead, they suddenly halt the recount.

Remember Bush/Gore? That sh*t was recounted like six times, and the results were they same every damn time. Not to mention that the guy advising Franken in this election/recount is the same guy who advised the Democrat in the stolen 2004 Washington election, where basically the same thing happened.

Notice how Franken was harping that “every vote counts”… that is, until Franken gets the lead. Strangely, he’s not so concerned about wrongly rejected absentee ballots anymore. I wonder why? Oh, I remember. It’s because he and his associates are crooked election thieves!

Coleman has a strong case for challenging the recount results. Shenanigans!

  13. 13 Kim Jan 6th, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Whatever, they’re both *sswipes anyway. Personally, many people didn’t want either of them.

  14. 14 Chris Jan 7th, 2009 at 12:57 am

“This is how Democrats steal elections every time it’s close. They magically find a few spare ballots sitting around with none of them for the Republican and all of them for the Democrat.”

Yeah like in florida when al gore stole the election from George Bush. Are Republicans all brainless c**ts or just you?

  15. 15 Delphi Jan 7th, 2009 at 8:21 am

Minnesotan here…I didn’t want either of them. I threw my vote away on the independent candidate because I couldn’t, in good conscience, vote for either of these turds. That said, if I had to choose between Franken and Coleman, I’d pick the slimy republican over the bitter, hateful, and even slimier liberal.

An aside to J-Rod: Totally, right-on correct observation. Hippies everywhere. Driving their crappy emissions-spewing cars with all the ‘live green’ stickers, and being all self-righteous about meat consumption. MPLS stinks of dreadlocks and patchouli and hypocrisy. And now, Franken.

  16. 16 Aleric Jan 7th, 2009 at 9:15 am

I agree with Kim, but the problem here is how a certiain party keeps winning with voter fraud and the legal bodies of the US simply stand by and do nothing.

  17. 17 Hurricane Jan 7th, 2009 at 10:01 am

*** Chris for the win for dumbest comment ever posted! Your mother must be so proud of you. ***

Geez, liberals cannot hide their lack of civility no matter how hard they try.

  18. 18 Jrod Jan 7th, 2009 at 11:01 am

Hey Chris…The difference is, in 2000 Bush was the Winner. Gore wanted 6 different recounts. He lost them all. He never “won” and then lost. He was never the winner to begin with.

  19. 19 Fortunate Son Jan 7th, 2009 at 11:16 am

Afterall, his children are all above average, Ed.

The Wall Street Journal has an article called “Funny Business in Minnesota” that details the recount, including some very bizarre cases where polling places reported exactly twice as many ballots as people who logged in to vote that night that were subsequently accepted in the recount.

That both Franken and Coleman have traded positions, indicates the bizarre route this process has taken, rather than personal hypocrisy, but the end result is that voters everywhere, yes, even like Chris, lose faith in the electoral process.

I don’t know either of these candidates very well, but I do know hands down which one I would hire if I had an executive level job to fill.

  20. 20 Fortunate Son Jan 7th, 2009 at 11:18 am

Harry Reid might be another hypocrite of the year for reversing positions on Burris. All signs point to Burris being seated by next Tuesday.

  21. 21 StrawberryGirl Jan 7th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

More liberal wuv from Chris. They LOVE the c-word, don’t they? It’s called “projection.”

  22. 22 Kristine Jan 7th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

But remember, Democrats are the party of female progress. I guess that means introducing more female-oriented insults into the English language.

I just wish Chris would have said “selected, not elected.” It would have made my day.

  23. 23 Austin Jan 7th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Faith in the electoral process? I think I have more faith in Xenu.

  24. 24 Fortunate Son Jan 7th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

    Xenu will save us.

  25. 25 Anni Jan 9th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

For starters, it is fishy and bizarre and I understand why people are weary of the whole damn process, however using Ann Coulter as a reference for anything is fail. She’s a whiny, divisive, loud-mouthed bitch who exists in the limelight for the sole purpose of hating on people who disagree with her. If you’re going to make a point - however valid it may be, so I don’t want to hear from you that I’m “hating” on angry, Republican voters, Simon, because I’m not! - I’d start by using someone credible.

ie. “Meat makes you fat, just like PETA said it would.” < “Certain animal byproducts can be unhealthy for you, just like Dr. Suchandsuchface said was possible.”

  26. 26 Kristine Jan 9th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

“She’s a whiny, divisive, loud-mouthed bitch who exists in the limelight for the sole purpose of hating on people who disagree with her.” Sounds like every liberal to me… Anne Coulter’s just the only conservative with enough spine to actually stand up for something.

  27. 27 Anni Jan 12th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

You respect and admire her so much you, yet can’t be bothered to even spell her name right?

  28. 28 Renee Martin Apr 7th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

I have never seen such bitter losers as the folks on the right. I am embarassed for all of you that are whining and crying; “President Obama is not a citizen.” “Franken is a comedian.” “Norm Coleman has bigger teeth so he should win.” “ACORN is evil.” “Will you bring a dolly and come to my tea party?” You all are not even original enough to come up with your own idea to show dissent..you have to repeat the past. Typical conservatives…keep trying the same things over and over again. Here is my idea… YOU LOST! You lost BIG! You almost destroyed the entire country! Don’t expect forgive and forget before one year in the United States of Amnesia. Never fear though, the idiots in this country will put the “religous, fiscally irresponsible” folks back in soon enough. As soon as things don’t go the way we all want we will throw a huge American baby fit and vote new idiots into office. P.S. Al Franken is a very well-educated, responsible, politically deft man. Don’t believe what you hear on right-wing sites. He is truly a moderate, that is in my opinion good for the country. He is good enough, smart enough and I really do like him. GO AL!!!!!

  29. 29 Nati Apr 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

You keep telling them, Renee Martin. Don’t let these right wing lunatics hold you down. Express yourself, share your wisdom and educate.

  30. 30 Simon Scowl Apr 8th, 2009 at 3:51 am

    “Wisdom.” Hm.

  31. 31 Beige Apr 8th, 2009 at 8:35 am

So, Renee has never seen “such bitter losers as the folks on the right”. Huh. I guess she was born in either 2001 or 2005. Way to type, Sweetie Booboo! You’re precocious!

  32. 32 Nati Apr 8th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

    ’twas sarcasm, Simon :(
