Tyra: Prostitution Is Bad Unless You’re a Contestant on ANTM

YouTube Preview Image

Tyra revisited one of her favorite subjects — prostitution — on her talk show last week. It’s a topic she brings up several times a year and it’s always the same lesson: Girls who get involved in sex working suffer from low self-esteem and are emotionally vulnerable and victimized by the most influential people in their lives.

But The Tyra Banks Show is not the supermodel’s only source of golden eggs, and what was good for the golden goose wasn’t always good for the golden gander.

Last season on America’s Next Top Model, Tyra and company sent the girls into the Red Light District of Amsterdam — the world capitol of prostitution. (Clip above.) The contestants’ challenge there was to pose in the window of a shop while a cast of male judges watched and debated who was doing the best job selling herself.

Erm. Nothing like a little glamorization to send a mixed message.

(Props to reader Katy W. for spotting the ongoing Typocrisy!)

So sending a bunch of underage girls into a brothel to pretend to be prostitutes isn’t a crime because A) its outside the US, or B) The judges were all gay men?

If this happened in Thailand and the judges were straight men, someone would be in prison.

    Tell me about it!

  3. 3 Lisa Jan 27th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

Do you think we would get lucky enough and they would arrest Tyra?

  4. 4 Queen Bee Jan 27th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

I don’t even know where to begin with this. Oh yeah, Tyra is totally nuts. Her ANTM endeavors started out ok, relatively professional, you need to do x, y and z to be successful in the modeling industry. It was all downhill from there. “Tell me about being molested as a child,” is probably never asked on any interview in any sane setting. Tyra puts on her faux concerned face and pulls out the horrible details of their lives so they can be on her dog and pony show. Very few of the contestants, let alone the “winners”, have gone on to be super star models. Yet Tyra runs cycle after cycle giving the contestants confusing, conflicting information on what it takes to get ahead, showcasing her own narcissism, “Look at how I smile with my eyes,” and making herself look like a fool. As she’s said, her mama didn’t raise no fool, so what gives, Tyra?

Where were the people that are supposedly waiting to prey on these girls posing as prostitutes….oh right, thye were the ones with the cameras filming it.

  6. 6 Chronic Malanga Jan 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Tyra is okay with prostitution as long as she’s the pimp.

  7. 7 Linda Jan 27th, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Tyra also once booted a contestant on ANTM because she refused to pose naked. It was against the model’s principles. But models aren’t supposed to have any princples, according to Tyra, who gave the contestant a good talkin’ too ’bout how things is in the model world.

She is NO paragon of virtue.

I couldn’t have said it better than Aleric:

“Where were the people that are supposedly waiting to prey on these girls posing as prostitutes….oh right, thye were the ones with the cameras filming it.

Right on the mark everyone. TB started out her shows with some level of intregity, but she has indeed gone downhill fast. This segment on ANTM sickened me, they must be seriously running out of ideas for the show and should hang it up. One minute she’s teaching girls to have self-esteem and to be better than that, and the next minute she’s tearing it all down by forcing them to do it. :-(

I’ve always figured modeling was a few ladder rungs above prostitution, but this is ridiculous.

  11. 11 Annie Jan 27th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Are we all that surprised? She’s all about money. She always has been and always will be. I can’t wait until she crawls back into the cesspool from which she came.

Duh, it’s not prostitution if you aren’t getting paid for it. It’s the being paid for having sex that gives the low self-esteem and abuse and stuff. As long as you’re volunteering your stuff, that’s not only fine, it’s what it takes!

Isn’t she basically a prostitute anyway?

  13. 13 Annie Jan 27th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Right, you’re not a prostitute, you’re just a slut. Doy.

seems to me that they were modeling. the stuff marjorie was doing wasn’t sexy, she wasn’t wearing a sexy dress, and her makeup was weird. they were just posing in the windows. aint no way anybody would pay for that. unless it was some weird fetish brothel for people that are into spazzes.

I gave Deceiver the tip for this story so I feel the need to mention something I completely forgot until after this was published here. I remember from watching this episode of ANTM that the modeling shoot was part of something called “Project Red Light Fashion” or something similar. Basically the point of the project is to turn the Red Light District into something positive by using it for modeling…or something. It’s all kind of vague. I’m not sure how modeling in prostitute’s former apartments is going to change anything, but okay.

I just wanted to mention that because it slightly changes the tone of what they were doing, since they were trying to do something positive, but I think my original point still stands. It seems to me if you wanted to change the Red Light District you would quietly fund public projects in the area or go to the government and not display women in windows like the prostitutes themselves do.

Sorry Deceiver bloggers for not remembering this fact sooner!

Who cares about dignity and stuff, more importantly, were the contestants smiling with their eyes whilst they were whoring themselves out? Did they elongate their necks whilst prostituting themselves? Focus on the real issues, people.

I protest against calling Amsterdams as the prostitute capital of the world. I do think it is appaling but nowhere near as bad as it is in other countries where it is illegal and girls of terrifying young age are forced to sell their bodies to dirty old tourists.
At least in Amsterdam there is some sort of regulation and control.
Again, I am opposed to any of it. But being Dutch I would like to try and set straight the faulty image (in my opinion) of my country’s capital.

I also think this is the main reason this doesn’t qualify as hypocrisy. Tyra’s crazy and all, that’s certain. But let’s let the ol’ logic centers kick in, as it were…

In Amsterdam, legalization makes prostitution much more valid as a career choice, as crazy as that sounds. The stuff that Tyra likes to cry about doesn’t exist on a comparable scale due to regulation / social acceptibility / etc.

When she brings up the various heartbreaking realities of prostitution on her show, she’s talking about people who are marginalized and who exist in harm’s way because what they do is illegal. Regardless of how you choose to view the emotional aspect of her whining, the bottom line is that bad stuff happens when you do illegal things for a living.

Tyra might be whiny, manipulative and batshit crazy… and she might be sending a lot of mixed messages to all those girls looking up to her (ha)… but I don’t know if this is the type of hypocrisy you seem to think it is.
